    Tata Motors Limited is India's largest automobile company, withconsolidated revenues of INR 1,23,133 crores (USD 27 billion) in

    2010-11. It is the leader in commercial vehicles in each segment,and among the top three in passenger vehicles with winningproducts in the compact, midsize car and utility vehicle segments.

    The company is the world's fourth largest truck manufacturer, andthe world's third largest bus manufacturer.

    Established in 1945, Tata Motors' presence indeed cuts across thelength and breadth of India. Over 6.5 million Tata vehicles ply onIndian roads, since the first rolled out in 1954. The company'smanufacturing base in India is spread across Jamshedpur(Jharkhand), Pune (Maharashtra), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh),Pantnagar (Uttarakhand), Sanand (Gujarat) and Dharwad(Karnataka). Following a strategic alliance with Fiat in 2005, it hasset up an industrial joint venture with Fiat Group Automobiles atRanjangaon (Maharashtra) to produce both Fiat and Tata cars andFiat powertrains. The company's dealership, sales, services andspare parts network comprises over 3,500 touch points; TataMotors also distributes and markets Fiat branded cars in India.

    Tata Motors, the first company from India's engineering sector tobe listed in the New York Stock Exchange (September 2004), hasalso emerged as an international automobile company. Throughsubsidiaries and associate companies, Tata Motors has operationsin the UK, South Korea, Thailand, Spain and South Africa. Amongthem is Jaguar Land Rover, a business comprising the two iconic

    British brands that was acquired in 2008. JLR supports two stateof the art engineering and design facilities and threemanufacturing plants (Solihull, Castle Bromwich & Halewood) inthe UK. In 2004, Tata Motors acquired the Daewoo CommercialVehicles Company, South Korea's second largest truck maker. Therechristened Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company haslaunched several new products in the Korean market, while alsoexporting these products to several international markets. Todaytwo-thirds of heavy commercial vehicle exports out of SouthKorea are from Tata Daewoo. In 2005, Tata Motors acquired a21% stake in Hispano Carrocera, a reputed Spanish bus and

    coach manufacturer, and subsequently the remaining stake in2009. Hispano's presence is being expanded in other markets. In2006, Tata Motors formed a joint venture with the Brazil-basedMarcopolo, a global leader in body-building for buses and coaches

    to manufacture fully-built buses and coaches for India and selectinternational markets. In 2006, Tata Motors entered into jointventure with Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant Company of

    Thailand to manufacture and market the company's pickupvehicles in Thailand. The new plant of Tata Motors (Thailand) hasbegun production of the Xenon pickup truck, with the Xenonhaving been launched in Thailand in 2008. Tata Motors (SA)(Proprietary) Ltd., Tata Motors' joint venture with Tata AfricaHolding (Pty) Ltd., has its assembly plant in South Africa atRosslyn, north of Pretoria, in the Gauteng province of South

    Africa. The plant can assemble, from semi knocked down (SKD)kits, light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles ranging from 4- 50 tonnes.

    Tata Motors is also expanding its international footprint,established through exports since 1961. The company'scommercial and passenger vehicles are already being marketedin several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South EastAsia, South Asia, CIS, Russia and South America. It has

    franchisee/joint venture assembly operations in Bangladesh,Ukraine, and Senegal.

    The foundation of the company's growth over the last 65 years isa deep understanding of economic stimuli and customer needs,and the ability to translate them into customer-desired offeringsthrough leading edge R&D. With over 4,500 engineers andscientists, the company's Engineering Research Centre,established in 1966, has enabled pioneering technologies andproducts. The company today has R&D centres in Pune,

    The Tata Nano has been subsequently launched, as planned, inIndia in March 2009. A development, which signifies a first for theglobal automobile industry, the Nano brings the comfort andsafety of a car within the reach of thousands of families.

    Designed with a family in mind, it has a roomy passengercompartment with generous leg space and head room. It cancomfortably seat four persons. Its mono-volume design will set anew benchmark among small cars. Its safety performanceexceeds regulatory requirements in India. Its tailpipe emissionperformance too exceeds regulatory requirements. In terms ofoverall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-wheelersbeing manufactured in India today. The lean design strategy hashelped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per

    unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency. Thehigh fuel efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbondioxide emissions, thereby providing the twin benefits of anaffordable transportation solution with a low carbon footprint.

    In May 2009, Tata Motors ushered in a new era in the Indianautomobile industry, in keeping with its pioneering tradition, byunveiling its new range of world standard trucks called Prima. Intheir power, speed, carrying capacity, operating economy andtrims, they will introduce new benchmarks in India and match thebest in the world in performance at a lower life-cycle cost. InOctober 2010, Tata Motors launched the Tata Aria, the first Indianfour-wheel drive crossover. The Tata Aria redefines severalbenchmarks with its design and technologies, offering classleading features that take comfort and safety to a new height.

    Tata Motors is equally focussed on environment-friendlytechnologies in emissions and alternative fuels. It has developedelectric and hybrid vehicles both for personal and public

    Manufacturing

    Tata Motors owes its leading position in the Indian automobile

    industry to its strong focus on indigenisation. This focus has

    driven the Company to set up world-class manufacturing units

    with state-of-the-art technology. Every stage of product evolution-

    design, development, manufacturing, assembly and qualitycontrol, is carried out meticulously. Our manufacturing plants are

    situated at Jamshedpur in the East,Pune and Sanand in the West

    and Lucknow and Pantnagar in the North.

    Jamshedpur

    Established in 1945, the Jamshedpur unit was the Company's firstunit and is spread over an area of 822 acres. It consists of four

    major divisions - Truck Factory, Engine Factory, Cab & CowlFactories. The divestments in March 2000 hived off the Axle andEngine plants into independent subsidiaries viz. TML DrivelinesLimited, respectively.

    The Truck Division boasts of two assembly lines. The mainassembly line, measuring 180 m in length has 20 work stationswith a vehicle rolling out every 8 minutes. The other line isdedicated to special purpose vehicles and for meeting therequirements of the Indian Army. The uniqueness of the Factory

    Advanced facilities for manufacturing long memberscomprising of a set-up of 5000 Tones Hydraulic press line,cut-to-length line for strip preparation purchased from M/sKohler of Germany and a Camber Correction line.

    Facility for hot forming of axle halves with a 3000 tone pressand heating furnace. Flexibility in manufacturing frames with an off line Proto-

    typing facility.

    The Cab & Cowl Factory is equipped with state-of-art facilities likeCentralized Paint Shop and Automated painting set up, Robotpainting, BIW Fabrication of day & sleeper cabs for trucks,Articulates (Tractor/ Trailer), BIW Fabrication of Cowls for buses,and other miscellaneous applications.

    The fully equipped Foundry, that the unit is supported by, supplieshigh-grade SG Iron castings for automobile components andexcavators, and is rated as one of the cleaner, better and highlyautomated foundries in the world. It has an annual capacity of42,000 MT of Good castings and makes, both, Gey and SG castIron casting. It manufactures all critical automobile castings e.g.Cylinder Block, Cylinder Head etc. It has a sophisticated KunkelWagner High Pressure Moulding line of a rated productioncapacity of 90 moulds/ hour. This is supported by a sand coolerand sand mixer from Kunkel Wagner. Its melting shop hasMedium Frequency Induction Furnaces for melting and ChannelFurnaces for holding. The pouring is done by a Channel Press Pourcoupled with a Steam Inoculation Dispenser. The core shop has astate-of-the-art Cold Box Machine, making four cores per minute.It has elaborate sand and metallurgical laboratories. In 1993 thefoundry was ISO 9002 certified by the Bureau Veritas QualityInternational, which was later followed by the more stringent QS9000 certification from the BVQI in the year 2000. Currently it is

    certified as TS: 16949 by BVC.

    The Engine Factory is responsible for the in-house manufacture ofTata 697/497 Naturally Aspirated and Turbo Charged engines, andthe 6B series engines manufactured at Tata Cummins.

    As one of the most modern forging set-ups in the Country, theForge Division is equipped with a semi-automated forging linewith 40,000 mkg Beche Hammer and state-of-the-art pressesfrom Kurimoto of Japan. It produces critical forgings likecrankshafts, front axle beams and steering parts for the

    automobile plant. The new forging line, installed in April 1984, hasthe capacity to forge front axle beams at 90 sec per piece andcrankshafts at 120 sec per piece. Mechanical presses helpproduce a variety of heavy forgings. The sophisticated FIDIA digit

    165 CC Graphite Milling Machine links shop floor machines to thedesign workstation. The Forge has been certified as ISO 9002 andQS 9000 by the BVQI.

    TML Drivelines Limited., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors,is currently the market leader in medium and heavy commercialvehicles axles in India with an installed capacity of over two lakhaxles per annum. The Company's product range includes FrontSteer axles- both live and normal, Rear Drive axles and dummy/trailer axles. It is currently the sole suppliers of M&HCV axles to

    the Jamshedpur and Lucknow plants of Tata Motors.

    TML Drivelines Limited has state-of-the-art manufacturingfacilities for making all major Axles components such as FrontAxle Beam, Stub Axles, Front & Rear Wheel Hubs, Differential,Axle Gears (Crown Wheel, Pinion, Bevel Gear & Shaft Gear), BanjoAxle Beam, Swivel Heads, Constant Velocity Shafts etc. For beingin the forefront of cutting edge technology, TML Drivelines Limitedhas proven skills in manufacturing axles from component level toassembly & testing. As a TS 16949 company, TML DrivelinesLimited encourages and continuously supports its vendor base toupgrade their Quality Management System to TS 16949.

    TML Drivelines Limited was established on 13th March 2000 as amajor subsidiary of Tata Motors by taking over operations of TataMotors' erstwhile Gearbox Division. It is a leading manufacturer ofautomotive transmissions, components and engineeringapplications for a wide range of medium and heavy commercial

    vehicles. The Company has a capacity of producing 94,000gearboxes per year which is being enhanced to a capacity of120,000 Gearboxes per year. It provides products and services ofsuperior quality, matching with the current economic andbusiness trends in medium and heavy commercial vehiclemarkets. The Quality System of TML Drivelines Limited is certifiedunder ISO/ TS-16949. In the environmental and safety front, it wasISO 14001 certified in 2004 and OHSAAS-18001 certified in 1999.

    responsibilities are also taken up seriously. Tata Motors,Jamshedpur, plays an active role in serving rural communitiessurrounding its Works through various community centres. Whilestriving to create a culture for self-help amongst the local

    populace, it has made significant progress in community andsocial forestry, sustainable development of wastelands, roadconstruction, rural health and education, development of ruralindustries, water supply and family planning. A signatory to theUN Global Pact, it also takes various initiatives in human rightsprotection, labour standards, environmental issues, moderneffluent treatment facilities, sanitation drives, soil and waterconservation programmes, tree plantation drives, etc.

    Pune

    The Pune unit is spread over two geographical regions- Pimpri(800 acres) and Chinchwad (130 acres). It was established in1966 and has a Production Engineering Division, which has one ofthe most versatile tool making facilities in the Indian sub-continent. It houses a Vehicle manufacturing complex which isone of the most integrated automotive manufacturing centres inthe Country producing a large variety of individual items andaggregates. It is engaged in the design and manufacture of

    sophisticated press tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, metal pattern andspecial tools, as well as models for the development of newranges of automobile products. Its capabilities have enabled TataMotors to introduce new products and improve existing oneswithout resorting to imports of dies or fixtures.

    Over the years, this division has developed expertise in designand manufacture of automated dies, fixtures and weldingequipment. Its large design group is fully conversant with state-of-the-art CAD facilities and manufacturing facilities comprising of

    light and heavy CNC machine shops, jigs boring room, plastictemplate shop, wood pattern and model pattern shop, five axisprecision machine tools and laser control machines. To cope withsuch a diverse range, four assembly lines have been established,one each for MCVs and HCVs, LCVs, Utility vehicles and one forPassenger Cars (Indica and Indigo).

    The Passenger Car Division in 'K' block executes the entireprocess of car manufacture over five shops - the engine shop, thetransmission shop, press and body shops, paint shop and the trimand final assembly shop. The shops are fully automated ensuring

    that there is minimal chance for error in the manufacturingprocesses.

    After the car is completely assembled, it goes through severalchecks like wheel alignment, sideslip test, brake test, shower test,and a short test run before it is ready for dispatch. All systemssuch as materials management, maintenance and other activitiesare computerized, enabling smooth operations and minimuminventory needs.

    The Electronics Division is engaged in the production of a widevariety of Machine Tool Controllers, PLCs, Test riginstrumentation, Servomotors, Proximity Switches. In addition, ithas developed a number of components such as flashers, horns,

    timers that are used in Tata Motors' vehicles.

    Industry experts rate the fully automated Foundries at Chinchwadand Maval among the best, worldwide. The Iron Foundry atChinchwad produced 37,000 Tons of high precision castings in2006-07 while the Iron Foundry at Maval produced 14000 Tons ofspheroidal Iron castings in 2006-07. These include CylinderBlocks, Cylinder Heads, Gear Box Housing, etc. To dispense withthe need for outsourcing, an Aluminium Foundry with an annualcapacity of 3,300 tonnes has been established.

    Pune

    Tata Motors Lucknow is one of the youngest production facilitiesamong all the Tata Motors locations and was established in 1992to meet the demand for Commercial Vehicles in the Indianmarket. The state-of-the-art plant is strongly backed by anEngineering Research Centre and Service set-up to support withlatest technology and cater to the complexities of automobile

    manufacturing. Fully Built Vehicle business, which is one of thefast growing areas of our business, is also established in Lucknow.

    Our plant, rolls out commercial vehicles and is specialised in thedesigning and manufacturing of a range of modern buses whichincludes Low-floor, Ultra Low-floor, CNG & RE Buses.

    The Lucknow facility also specialises in manufacturing HCBS (Highcapacity Bus System) buses.

    Pangnagar

    The Company has set up a plant for its mini-truck Ace and thepassenger carrier Magic (based on the Ace platform) at Pantnagarin Uttarakhand. The plant began commercial production in August2007. This is the company's fourth plant, after Jamshedpur(commercial vehicles), Pune (commercial vehicles and passenger

    vehicles) and Lucknow (commercial vehicles). The plant is spreadover 953 acres, of which 337 acres is occupied by the vendorpark.

    State-of-the-art facilities include weld shops, paint shops, engineand gear box shops and assembly lines. The Company hasinvested over Rs.1000 crores in the plant. Vendors for the vehiclehave made additional investments to set up their plants in thevendor park adjoining the plant. The operation has generated

    about 7500 direct and indirect jobs in the plant, among vendorsand service providers in the area.

    Sanand

    Tata Motors plant for the Tata Nano at Sanand, in Ahmedabaddistrict of Gujarat, marks the culmination of the Companys goalof making the Tata Nano available to hundreds of thousands offamilies, desirous of the car a safe, affordable and environmentalfriendly mode of transport. The capacity of the plant, to begin

    with, will be 250,000 cars per year to be achieved in phases, andwith some balancing is expandable up to 350,000 cars per year.Provision for further capacity expansion has also beenincorporated in this location.

    Built in a record time of 14 months starting November 2008, theintegrated facility comprises Tata Motors own plant, spread over725 acres, and an adjacent vendor park, spread over 375 acres,to house key component manufacturers for the Tata Nano.

    In line with latest world-class manufacturing practices, the TataNano plant has been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.

    They include sophisticated robotics and high speed productionlines. Conscious of the critical need of environment protection,

    the plant has energy-efficient motors, variable frequency drives,and systems to measure and monitor carbon levels. These aresupplemented with extensive tree plantation, sustainable watersourcing through water harvesting and ground water rechargingand harnessing solar energy for illumination.
