    THE NOMINA OF MACEDONIA*Argyro B . Tataki

ABS TRA CT: The presen tation of the collection will be focused on som e of the points of interest that a co mpletedcollection of the relevant m aterial presents, name ly: The num ber of nom ina attested in Macedonia, with a presentationof the mos t frequent ones and a discussion of the rare o nes, with an atte mp t to isolate all those that are rarely (or notat all) attested in the rest of the Greek E ast. The num ber of persons bearing the tripartite R oman nam e comp ared tothe ones whose nam e consists of a nom en followed, usually, by a greek cogn ome n.

The study of any subject connected with theinscriptions found in M acedonia primarily has toface the problem of the state of publication of theinscriptions found in this region. If there wereproperly indexed corpora for the inscriptions ofMacedonia there would not be a need for thecollection I am presenting here. As it is well knownthe one and only volume of IG connected to anyarea northern of Thessaly covers only the inscriptions of Thessaloniki and was published as late asin 1972. As Thessaloniki was the largest city ofMacedonia during the Roman period and very richin inscriptions its epigraphic corpus offers a lengthylist of persons bearing Roman names; the nominaof Thessaloniki are more than 1701. The publicationin 1985 of the corpus of inscriptions of UpperMacedonia includes material dating mostly fromthe Roman period; nevertheless the holders ofRoman citizenship attested in this area whereRomans were not interested in settling, are fewand the nomina represented in it belong mostly tothe most common ones2. With the exception ofthese two corpora for most parts of Macedoniawe still have to rely on the corpus of M. Demitsas,

aworkof 18963, that covers only 1/6th of the totalof about 6000 inscriptions that is estimated to havebeen foundin this area; about 80% of those belongto the period after the Roman occupation. A largenumber of the nomina bo rne by the individualsattested in the Thessalonican inscriptions and alsoattested in inscriptions from other Macedoniancities, with the addition of more names of the samecategory, had already been included in the Macedonian Prosopographyoi D. Kanatsoulis, that coversthe period that starts in 148 B.C., the year Macedonia became a Roman province, and ends in thetime of Constantine theGreat, in the beginning ofthe 4th century A.D.; this work that appeared in1955 and was supplemented in 1967, in additionto its o ther usefulness, constituted until recen tlythe most precious bibliographical guide to the inscriptions of Macedonia4. My work on theProsopographyoiAncientMacedonia owes a great dealto this earlier contribution5; the same is also thecase for this present collection of Roman nomina. Before proceeding to its presentation I wish alsoto referto the Archive of Macedonian Inscriptionscompiled by the members of the MacedonianProgramme of our Centre6. To this Archive, thatcovers the inscriptions found in the area of ancientMacedonia that is included within the contemporary Greek boarder, I have recently added the section of Lynkestis that lies to the north and the areasthat correspond to ancient Pelagonia, Derrioposand Paeo nia which were also for some time incorporated to ancient M acedonia7.First I will describe the main features of this listthat forms a book of names rather than a prosop o-graphy. It consists of a list of thenomina in alphabetical order in Latin, although the great majorityof the inscriptions foundin Macedonia is in Greek. This was done in order to facilitate their search instandard w orks8. Another reason for preferringthe Latin is thevariety of spelling in Greek for names starting with the letter V: e.g. and , , etc. For each no-men, in order to facilitate further observations,we listed separately the persons attested inGreek,in alphabetical order of their cognomina, followedby the ones attested in Latin. The nomina of eachletter of the alphabet are numbered; also numberedare the persons within each entry. In cases of multi

ple nomina only the first one is numbered and given bibliographical references, the rest refer tothe first one. Included in the list are all the personsknown from published inscriptions in Greek andLatin m entioned with a complete tripa rtite Romanname or, as is more usual in the Greek East ingenerali, with a nomen followed by a cognomen.Parenthetically as an example illustrating thisommission I give here the relevant totals of thepersons whose nom ina start w ith letter A; in ageneral total of 814 only 152 have a praenomen.Included in our list are also freedmen and irregularformations where a nomen is combined with aGreek name or with a Latin praenomen o r cognomen in the fashion of the Greek name, that is asthe name or the patronymic of a person. Thiscategory of names does not belong to Roman citizens but indicates the offsprings of mixed marriagesbetween Roman citizens ma peregrini, accordingto the interpretation ofprof. F. Papazoglou on theoccasion of the recent re-publication by her of theephebic lists of Styberra9. This use of the familyname of the parent who was a Roman citizen hasadded to our list some nomina no t present otherwise, as e.g. Peticiusatteste d as the patronymic ofthree ephebes in Styberra10 and Rotilius and

    THE NOMINA OF MACEDONIA

Veratius as the name or the patronymic of otherephebes in the same city1 '.The size of the material lead to certain decisionson the length of the bibliographical references foreach entry; preference is given to the most accessible sources. For inscriptions included in corporaonly this reference is given; the inclusion of a personin the Prosopography of D. Kanatsoulis o r in otherProsopographies is always indicated in the entry.

Roman officials connected with the administration of the provin ce, known from inscriptions andcoins, are also included in our list; to them a shortprosopographical approach was necessary as wellas additional bibliographical references (in RE,PIR, Th. Sarikakis's work on the Roman officialsof Macedonia12 etc). Also included in our list arecitizens of Macedonian cities attested abroad;sometimes they bear rare nomina as is the case of ( ) ' , from HerakleiaSintike, attested as an initiate in Samothrace13;foreigners with their ethnics who lived in Macedonia have also been included. We did not includethe names of emperors and consuls mentioned insome formal inscriptions. The collection amounts to almost 3000 persons. The total number of nomina attested in Macedoniais 561 ; this number will be probably a little lower

in the end. The reason is that some names withslight differences in spelling, as e.g. Anniiand Anii, have been listed separately as two names14.The names in our list occur from only once to392 times, a number that corresponds to the Aurelii;they are followed by the other imperial nomina, usually considered as a proof for the award ofRoman citizenship by the emperor to locals15. TheIulii follow (243 times), the Aelii ( 178 times), theClaudii(\56 times), the Flavii( 120 times); finallythe Ulpii are 40, the Septimii only 12 and Cocceiiare represented by one published example from

Edessa16. The most frequent and widely distributedamong the non-imperial nomina are the Valerli(61 times), very close to them are the Herrenii(59times), Comelii (48), Petronii (46), Domitii (44),Popillii, Popilii (42), Cassii (33), Mestrii (29),Antonii(25\ Marcii(22), Varinii(21 )and Caecilliiand Licinii (20); the numbers refer to the timesthat they con stitute the first nomen of the person.

On the other hand many names are attested afew times or only once exclusively in one place. Here is an example from letter A: Aedi, Acomii,Aconii, Albii, Ambivii and Ancharii are attestedexclusively in Philippi17, Acutii and Arsenii inBeroea18, Atteii in Edessa19, Aviani in Dion20,Arbeianian d A villii m Herakleia Lynkestis2 , Alliiand Agrippi in Styberra22, Aeficii and Artorii in

Stobi23, Asinata and Atenii in other settlementsof Paeonia24, Accoleii in Bisaltia25, Agrenini andAprusii in Chalcidice26; finally 22 of the nominastarting with A are attested exclusively in Thessaloniki27.Some of the names of our collection such as e.g. , ( ), etc., all attested in Greek, seem to be unique28. Nom ina endingin -anus, are quite numerous in M acedonia (as isseen e.g. from those starting with letter A: Aelianus,Aemilianus, Aequanus, Arbeianus, Attianus,Aurelianus, Avianus); special reference should bemade to the ones formed by Greek names as aree.g. ' , known fromthe territory of Beroea29, from Herakleia Lynkestis30 and from Chalcidice31.The variety of the nomina attested in Macedoniaindicates that many Romans settled in this province. Thanks to epigraphic evidence we know of theexistence of Roman communities in Beroea,Edessa, Akanthos, Styberra and Thessaloniki32, inaddition to the co lonies founded in the provinceat the same period: Kassandreia, Dion, Philippi,Pella and Stobi and most probably Apollonia33. Itis not possible to examine here even briefly thenomina of each of these places. In the oral presentation of this paper we had focused our attention onone of the cities mentioned earlier, Edessa, demonstrating the reflection of the settlement of Romansto the onomasticon of the city on the basis of itsProsopography. Since these observations havebeen incorporated into a work published already34,our attention is turned now to the nom ina of another city, those of Herakleia Lynkestis. ManyRomans had settled in this important Macedoniancity, located very favorably near the boarderbetween Macedonia and Illyria on via Egnatia^,although an epigraphic testimony for the politicalorganisation of the Romans of this city does notexist, there are many Roman elements in its inscriptions, already in the beginning of the 1 st century A.D., as Fanoula Papazoglou points out36.

    THE NOMINA OF MACEDONIA

that we have already mentioned37 CaelidiPs, Caprei-mP9, Clementi!*0, CutiPl,HadrianP2, Lalcii43 , Me-vi i44 , Sevii or Saevii45 , Stertinii46 , all of them attested in Greek and also Avillii that we havealready mentioned47 and Vessueni48 attested inLatin. In Edessa we had also noticed that some ofthe names of the same category com e exclusivelyfrom this Macedonian city, although they areknown from other parts of the Roman world 49:Castrici!50 , CuriatiP{, MulviP2, PeducaeP*, andTineiP4. Some of the names of Herakleia Lynkestisthe , and are unknown elsewhere55; others are rare as are the , and 56.

The above first observations on some of thenomina of Macedonia, add to other indicationsfor the extent of the Roman presence in this partof the Roman world, a subject to be discussed inthe final presen tation of this work.A. B. Tataki
