Mister PipThereza Rowe

Meet Mister Pip, a charming, stripy cat who wants to find a quiet place to sleep. But it’s not as easy as it sounds. He settles into each of his favourite spots but between the VROOOM of the vacuum cleaner, the persistent RING, RING of the telephone, and the incessant COO COO of canoodling pigeons, he is disturbed and woken at every turn. Will he ever find somewhere peaceful to rest his head?

Thereza Rowe’s stylishly illustrated bedtime story is sure to strike a chord with pre-schoolers who will love making the book’s sounds out loud as much as they’ll adore Mister Pip himself.

Lion is so demoralised, his tears have started to blur the words of the story.

Jill bravely decides to jump into the book and rescue Lion, landing in the middle of a particularly dangerous chapter. But with Dog at her side, nothing is too difficult for Jill to conquer, and she sets out to return Lion to his rightful place as king of the jungle.

Which celebrities would you put in your Warhol hall of fame?

54

Many celebrities – including artists,

models, actors and musicians – came

through the doors of the factory, to

spend time with Warhol and work

with him on paintings, films and other

projects. Warhol photographed them

and made short films known as ‘screen

tests’. In these, they stood facing his

fixed camera for several minutes. In

the late 1960s he founded a magazine

called Interview, which included

features and news on the celebrities

he admired. He was also commissioned

to create silkscreen portraits of some

of the leading stars of the time.

Warhol made art from the things he

saw in the world around him. His 1964

series of Brillo soap box sculptures

were made from plywood and painted

so that they looked like the actual

cardboard cartons that could be found

in a supermarket. Stacked in galleries,

rather than on the shop or warehouse

floor, these packages asked an

interesting question – what is it that

makes these works art?

Warhol making one of his ‘silkscreen’

paintings. Using this method, he could

choose a photograph or an image from

a magazine and reproduce it many

times on canvas or paper, selecting

different inks and producing subtle

variations in colour and layout. No

two pictures were ever quite the same;

Warhol and his assistants incorporated

the ‘mistakes’ – smudged ink, blurred

lines – making them an important

feature of the final pictures.

Page 21: Tate Children's Books Rights Guide 2016

What’s the difference between a real can of soup

on a supermarket shelf and a picture of a can of

soup on the wall of an art gallery?

What made modern art so ground-breaking? Discover for

yourself and re-write art history with Modern Art! – a thought-

provoking and irreverent introduction to one of the world’s most

revolutionary art movements.

This interactive activity book introduces the reader to the life

and work of sixteen modern artists. But rather than offering a

prescriptive approach to art history, it encourages children to

write and think about art for themselves. It invites the reader

to respond to questions, compose stories and poems, doodle

and make their own notes in response to the art and ideas they

discover. With a sketchbook binding and funky graphic design,

Modern Art! will get kids scribbling and thinking – the perfect tool

for the next generation of budding art critics!

Features the work of Louise Bourgeois, Joseph Cornell, Marcel

Duchamp, Damien Hirst, Edward Hopper, Frida Kahlo, Paul Klee,

Yayoi Kusama, René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Paula Rego, Bridget

Riley, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol and

Rachel Whiteread.
