Kia ora / Dear Parents Since the Budget was announced last week there has been considerable speculation and anxiety regarding its impact upon Intermediate schools in general. On the face of it, the implementation for Tauranga Intermediate School would be dire with us losing most of our specialist staff including Science, Music, Graphics, Soft Materials, Food Technology, Hard Materials, Technology, Electronics, ICT Specialist, International Specialist, Literacy Specialist, Numeracy Specialist and Special Education Specialist.

In other words the unique nature of our school would be destroyed. In addition classroom numbers would rise.

Of all Intermediate schools in New Zealand ours would be the worst affected because of our unique size.

What have our Board and Senior staff done about this?

* Written to the Secretary of Education explaining the impact on our school and requesting a response - no response to date;

* Contacted the Ministry of Education Senior Adviser to request an urgent meeting with our Board - arranged;

* Contacted Simon Bridges MP to request an urgent meeting - arranged.

* I will be attending the Intermediate Principalsʼ Conference in Auckland tomorrow to be addressed by the Minister of Education Hekia Parata.

What Can You Do To Help?

* Ring the Ministry of Education in Rotorua 07 349 7399 email: [email protected] and complain.

* Ring Simon Bridges MP (07 579 9669) or email: [email protected] and complain.

Any help and support you can give us to retain our school as it is today would be very much appreciated. This Budget decision if it is carried through will put immense pressure on our Board of Trustees as the Government has stated cynically that the reconfiguration of the school will not be a Wellington decision but will be decided by local trustees.

Thanks for your help. A quality state education for all our students should be a priority for us all.

NGAMUWAHINE LEOTC CAMP

Just a brief report on the incident at camp.

A group of 10 students diverted up a side track and got lost. The group of 50 students were under the supervision of three staff and one parent and they were participating in a flora and fauna observation on the edge of the bush very close to our camp.

Our staff raised the alarm as soon as they realised the group was missing and the police and search and rescue were notified.

Quick action by the authorities and our specialist LEOTC teacher enabled the search and rescue ground parties to quickly find the missing students.

The students were given an medical examination and all were returned to their parents, fit and well and in good spirits, ready to return to their camp today.

The Tauranga Intermediate School Community and Ngamuwahine Camp Trustees are extremely grateful to the Tauranga Police, Westpac Trust Helicopter, Eagle Helicopter, Search and Rescue, 4w Drive Club, Ken Curtis Buses, St Johns, Victim Support and the Tauranga Intermediate School staff and the studentsʼ parents for the exemplary co-ordinated services that brought the incident to a quick and safe conclusion.

This has highlighted the need for up to date telephone records to be held at the school. If your phone number has changed please let us know urgently by filling out the form attached.

RESTORATIVE PRACTICEWe were very lucky to have the opportunity to welcome Margaret Thorsborne to Tauranga Intermediate to work with all staff on restorative practice.

Through our PB4L structure, all students and staff may use a restorative approach when dealing with issues. A mini chat format could proceed as follows:

THE RESTORATIVE CHAT

To the wrong doer

Weʼre here to talk about....What happened?

What were you thinking at the time?

What have you thought about since?

Who do you think has been affected by what you did? In what way?

..................................................................................

.

What do you need to do to make things right?

How can we make sure this doesnʼt happen again?

What can I do to help you?

To the victim

What did you think when it happened?

What have you thought about since?

How has it affected you?

Whatʼs been the worst of it?

Whatʼs needed to make things right?

..................................................................................

.

How can we make sure this doesnʼt happen again?
