This is quite an exciting time for all of us! This past quarter was lledwith many successes and leads into a very promising third quarter, with opportunities of new partnerships and monumental events on the

horizon. In this issue, it is my goal to better familiarize you with the workthat we do in all of our entities, as well as formally introduce you tothe structure in which they all exist. The Smiley Group, Inc. (TSG) is a

communications corporation established in support of human rights andrelated empowerment issues. TSG serves as the holding company forthe various Smiley enterprises of broadcast and publishing, the speakercircuit, events, and the Internet. Our organizations have a simple andcommon purpose: to Enlighten, Encourage and Empower. We constantlyevolve each organization to better meet our communitys needs through

    informative and inspiring media.

2011 has proven to be a very productive year. Along with the launch ofmy newest book, FAIL UP: 20 Lessons on Building Success from Failure, and the extremely positive feedback received from our America I AM

Exhibit in Washington DC, I just wrapped up my PBS Tour, where I hostednversations in different cities. I thoroughly enjoyed traveling and meeting with folks from all over theuntry! In case you missed the tour, click here to review some of the highlights from the various stopsng the way.

October 2010, I had the distinguished pleasure of traveling to China with The Committee of 100adership Delegation for distinguished journalists. After interacting with the people, engaging in theirstoms and learning their history, I felt compelled to bring my staff so they could revel in the experiencewell. In keeping step with our mission, TSG, accompanied by my dear brother Dr. Cornel West, veled to China on May 26, 2011. While the initial purpose of the trip was to tape my PBS show, Iered my staff a unique opportunity to tour the cities of Beijing and Shanghai so they, too, would returnimpacted as I was. During the course of our trip, we visited the Great Wall, Imperial Palace and many

er wonderful landmarks. We also had the opportunity to celebrate Dr. Wests 58th birthday while inanghai. I hope you enjoy the photos from the staff. Our trip was truly transforming, and I believe ourtire staff would agree with the sentiment that it fell right in place with our desire to leave legacies ande purposeful existences. The special is scheduled to air from July 11, 2011, through July 15, 2011, on

    nightly talk show on PBS.

th support from the Foundation staff, the students implemented a summit that brought together 600ung people for a ve-day conference. Now eight years later, 64 college and high school students haverved on what is now known as the National Youth Advisory Council. And key elements from the summitat the young leaders created still exist inside the Institute, mainly its focus on a youth-led, adult-supported

    odel of leadership development.

e objective was to identify young leaders from the Foundations existing pool of alumni and provide them

h an expanded opportunity to increase their leadership skills in the areas of critical thinking, projectnning, advanced advocacy and service.

entifying young leaders is one thing, but giving them an opportunity to demonstrate and test their skills asders really allows us to fulll our mission.

t surprising, the young people who have served on thisuncil have done great work, but what is even more exciting is

at the experience they gain gives them a framework for otherportunities as a result of being on the council.

r example, past member Ginene Lewis graduated Phi Betappa from Spelman College. She is now in her third year of

w school and serves on the board of directors of the YWCAPhiladelphia. Elicia Azali, a graduate of The Ohio Stateiversity, serves on the Foundations board of directors.

cholas Hall, a student at Vanderbilt and past president of the

08 council, was selected as one of 12 students to participate in the Institute for Responsible Citizenship

C). It is considered one of the most prestigious and competitive programs for African American males.

the 64 students who have participated as council members, all have graduated high school and 39 havew completed college; and 12 are in their junior or senior year of college. On the current council, three ofe 12 members will enter college in the fall.
