retty good dough for just making conversation,” encouraged Jim Yavorcik’s hometown employer as JY launched his legal career. There’s truth to this simple understanding of what lawyers do. We are paid for our

words. Spoken words in court, advice in our office, in board-rooms, and over the phone. Written words in contracts, wills, letters, emails, and in pleadings.

My father Bob Dixon always said the law license on his office wall was “worth a million dollars.” But when he retired, my wall inherited from his a carved bust of Lincoln given decades ago by an appreciative client. The artist’s son was in my office just last year and I learned more about my precious object. We all have these treasures in our office. Valuable to us, they recall events, people, cases, and family. Solid stuff we hold onto in a profession of words.

Byron Choka has an elegant framed bronze plaque on his office wall. It’s not a Picasso but the revered words of the Declaration of Independence. A work of art Byron inherited from Joe Nathanson. Denny Lyle also has precious words in his office. But just as Denny’s reputation as a mock trial coach is concealed, you have to look on the back of a photograph for the cherished handwritten dedication from a past team member. In 30 years of coaching, Denny’s record rivals a fellow BGSU coach, Urban Mey-er. At the college level, Denny’s mock trial teams have finished second, third and fifth place in national rankings. His Sylvania Southview teams garnered 20 straight state tournament appearances, six Ohio titles, one second place and 15 final four appearances. In the last two seasons alone, his teams earned 25 straight wins, were undefeated in the national tournament, and won a World Title. (Secret’s out Denny.)

When you walk into Heidi Hartman’s office you are drawn to a striking bronze sculpture. It stands next to her 25th floor view of Toledo, but it’s hard to take your eyes off the unique artwork. It’s a walking stick and self portrait

created by her artist husband. Heidi’s office is also adorned with colorful pictures of her children, which makes it a little easier to work “until 10 PM tonight on a summary judg-ment.” Two pieces of gleaming bronze are discovered in Peter Lavalette’s office. They are “butter bars” given to Peter when he entered the Coast Guard Academy. The ensign bars belonged to Peter’s father, a Merchant Marine Academy

graduate.

They carry his Dad’s hand typed instructions to keep “red on right returning” to port. A treasured item revealed in the office of Tom Dil-lon helps him navigate. It’s a polished pewter Saint Thomas More wall cross. A gift from his parents, the Patron Saint of Lawyers reminds Tom

to “always do the right thing.”

A colossal primary colored banner covers the office wall of Tom Killam. It announces bright and large “Killam. It all happens here!” Turns out the banner

celebrates an Alberta Canada town founded by a relative, but a lot is happening in Tom’s busy office. You can ferret out an exotic pet in the office of Casey & Slaybod. It is not a llama or an emu—it’s a skunk. Sheldon says he received the mascot from his father and it has been with the firm since 1973. The stuffed skunk has only once caused a problem. Richard Kerger refused to sit next to it in a deposition. That’s cruel.

The most precious object in Sarah Corpening’s office is a modest and sincere picture of her parents taken in the 1990s. Both Tony and Irene Dispenza are now deceased. The picture, in a clever iron gate frame, is carefully positioned on a shelf looking over Sarah’s desk.

Julia Bates points to a precious picture taken at her oath of office. In it she is beaming. Husband Judge Jim Bates stands by her side. Justice Alice Resnick swears her in and Julie’s mother, dad, sister, and spiritual leader are all promi-nent. But what makes Julie smile is the sour expression on the kids’ faces. The now super

successful children were not happy and would rather be home enjoying Kraft macaroni and cheese.

Vallie Bowman-English reaches for a gift from her mentor, Tracy Sniderhan. On a trip to Prague in the mid nineties, Tracy captured a remarkable Rubenesque picture of the Basilica of St. Nicholas. The mentor handcrafted the frame for the newly minted prosecutor and “it will always be with me,” says Vallie.

We all have our precious objects alongside our “million dollar licenses.” The way we practice in Toledo makes our licenses even more valuable. The legal community is just the right size. We have an ingrained culture of mentoring and enjoy courteous, trust-worthy, and problem solving colleagues.

We are rich.

4 – June 2015

This year’s summer reading list is a true potpourri of books—no theme, no destination, no deeper mean-ing of life, no ties to Toledo or the law. Just pure, unadulterated reading pleasure. But hey, what is

summer for if not to lose oneself in a good book and escape, at least for a brief moment, the pres-sures of life and the law (okay, so I lied and snuck in a life lesson).

Let’s get started.

The Circle, by Dave Eggers. A classic dystopian novel of the experiences of working at a company that is a combination of Google and Facebook. Technology worker Mae Holland joins a powerful Internet company in what starts out as an incred-ibly rewarding experience, but soon begins to fall apart.

The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt. Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction The Goldfinch is a well-written, if complicated, tale of one person’s adventures in life. A classic boy’s adventure story, possibly a modern-day Treasure Island.

Chasing Cézanne, by Peter Mayle. A very light read set among the international art scene and featur-ing, among other locations, the south of France, art galleries, homes of prominent collectors, and extravagant restaurants. Certainly nothing to be taken seriously at any level.

The Silkworm, by Robert Galbraith. Harry Potter fans need not despair—JK Rowling has embarked on another series, this time under the name Robert Galbraith. The Silkworm is the second in what appears to be a series of crime novels for adults. Set in the world of London publishing, this particular tale is well plotted with great characters and lots of fun.

The Bone Clocks, by David Mitchell. Another great read by one of the most talented novelists of his

generation. Mitchell is such a good writer that you can almost ignore the fact that this isn’t one of his better efforts. Still, it is easy and satisfying to get lost in fantastic worlds and convo-luted plots.

Empire of Sin, A Story of Sex, Jazz, Murder, and the Battle for Modern New Orleans, by Gary Krist. The

subtitle kind of says it all. Set in New Orleans at the turn-of-the-century, with a focus on the Storyville neighborhood. Well-researched and well-written, a must read for all lovers of New Orleans.

Missing Susan, by Sharyn McCrumb. Another Eliza-beth MacPherson mystery novel. The main plot here is no mystery—an English mystery tour guide, Rowan Rover, is hired to kill Susan Cohen during a tour so that Susan’s uncle can have the family fortune. Tour participant Elizabeth McPherson is a forensic anthropologist and Anglophile. A lighter read than other MacPherson novels.

Annie on My Mind, by Nancy Garden. A “young adult” novel that is read and appreciated by gays, lesbians and their allies of all ages. Annie on My Mind explores the developing relationship between two students from vastly different backgrounds and the effect on their lives.

And finally, some recommendations for those who enjoy a good tale, but prefer not to read in the eye-straining glare of a hot summer sun, or may face a long drive to your particular spot of paradise on earth. For those traveling with little ones, we recommend The Enchanted Forest Chronicles: Dealing with Dragons/Searching for Dragons/Calling on Drag-ons/Talking to Dragons, by Patricia C. Wrede. Pure fantasy that delights and entertains both the young and the more mature. Pre books on CD this was a Book on Parent read (read by the non-driving parent of course).

Older children may enjoy the Artemis Fowl series, by Irish author Eoin Colfer, that features a boy genius criminal mastermind and various residents of a world below the earth’s surface.

Books available on tablets, MP3 players, and cell phones—all downloadable through our wonderful

public library system—give easy access to novels that can satisfy every reading preference. For those who like murder mysteries, the Summer Reading List suggests two series featuring medical examiner types—the Temperance Brennan series by

Kathy Reichs (think the TV series Bones) and the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell—and a series featuring a classic, hard bitten Los Angeles Detective, the Harry Bosch series by Michael Con-nelly. All three series have decent plots, interesting characters, and engaging action.

So there you are. A multitude of good reads for a relaxing summer.

Daniel Steinbock served as Dean of the University of Toledo College of Law from 2010 to 2015, and he has been a member of the Toledo Law faculty since 1985. He kindly agreed to talk with the staff of the TBA news about his tenure as Dean and his future plans.

TBA News: What are some of your ac-complishments as Dean?

Steinbock: One accomplishment is the high quality of students we recruited and maintained in a very competitive law school market. This past July, the passage rate of Toledo Law graduates taking the bar exam for the first time was second only to Ohio State in Ohio, and second only to the University of Michi-

gan in Michigan. I am proud of our students’ achieve-ments.

I am also proud of the caliber of people we added to the Toledo Law faculty. We hired 10 new faculty

members in the past few years. They are all great teachers and great scholars. These hires also increased the gender and ethnic diversity of the faculty.

We made significant improvements to the Law Center building. The McQuade Law Auditorium was completely renovat-ed. It serves as the face of the law school

and the site of our most important events. We refurbished The Forum, a space in the center of the building where students gather to study and talk. Other building improvements are planned.

I am proud that Toledo Law provides a nationally ranked education at an afford-able cost. The law school is lowering its tuition for everyone starting this fall by about $2300 per year. It is reducing in-state tuition by 13% and offering in-state tuition to students from Michigan and Indiana in addition to Ohio.

We increased funding for public interest and public service work, and it will be increasing further.

An Interview with Daniel Steinbock

TBA news

June 2015 – 7

Toledo Law reinstituted the Masters of Studies in Law program. This is a one-year full time masters exposing students not interested in practicing law to areas of law that will be helpful to them in their chosen careers. Examples include labor and employment, intellectual prop-erty, real property and real estate, and healthcare regulation.

TBA News: What are some challenges you faced as Dean?

Steinbock: A major challenge was a drop in the number of law school applicants nationwide. This was probably attribut-able to a number of factors, including a downturn in the legal industry during the recession. This resulted in some admitted attorneys and new graduates of all law schools struggling to find a law job, and a spate of bad publicity for the profession.

Another challenge that turned into an opportunity was the demand by students and employers for more experiential education. Toledo Law now offers a wide variety of courses providing substantial instruction in professional skills, includ-ing clinics, externships, simulations, and legal drafting courses.

TBA News: What do you see in the future for legal education and the legal industry?

Steinbock: In legal education there will be some growth in distance learning, also called online education. It is appealing because it reduces commuting to and from law school. We instituted an online sports law class this spring. There may be other online classes in the near future.

There hopefully will be an upturn in job openings for lawyers. Baby boomers are retiring. Fewer people are going to law school now than 4-5 years ago. Also we are seeing people with JDs going into jobs not strictly law practice but in which a JD is helpful training, such as compli-ance jobs in the healthcare industry, investment firms, insurance, banking, and human resources.

Technology will, I believe, replace only a small percentage of the work of lawyers. Technology can do some routine things, but it takes a human lawyer to handle things that require judgment, wisdom, understanding the human and emotion-al dimension, managing relationships of parties, and identifying legal issues before they are a problem.

TBA News: How was the relationship between the law school and the practic-ing bar during your term as Dean?

Steinbock: It is a terrific relationship—I can’t think of a better relationship. This is true for both UT grads and those who graduated from other schools. We have had fantastic cooperation with the Toledo Bar Association in many areas, including speakers, mentors, and CLEs and other TBA programs held at the law school. The Dean of Toledo Law is an ex officio member of the TBA Board of Directors, which facilitates a great

working relationship. Local firms and organizations are an important source of employment for our graduates.

Personally my relationship with the local practicing bar has been a very satisfying part of my tenure as Dean, and earlier as a faculty member, for 30 years. I have known many members of the bar since they were law students, and I have seen them develop as lawyers and as commu-nity leaders. To take one example, Mi-chelle Kranz, next year’s TBA President, was chair of the moot court board when I was their adviser.

TBA News: What are your future plans?

Steinbock: I will be doing a working sabbatical next year. Toledo Law has a relationship with the Law Department at the University of Szeged in Hungary. Sze-ged is a sister city of Toledo. The faculty of Toledo Law have taught courses there over the last ten years. I will be teaching evidence and trial practice in Szeged this fall.

Toledo Law is establishing a similar relationship with a law school in Poland along with two other U.S. law schools, to provide American law courses for law students there. If it gets off the ground, I will also teach there. There are some other possible activities for next year still in the works.

This year the Ohio State Bar Association, led by our very own Marty Mohler, made Ac-cess to Justice the theme of its

annual convention. The first morning of the convention was devoted to an Access to Justice Summit. Summit participants, kicked off with a keynote speech by lawyer/author Scott Turow, explored the recommendations of the report of the Ohio Supreme Court Task Force on Ac-cess to Justice. Chief Justice O’Connor commissioned the Task Force, led by former Justice Yvette McGee Brown, to examine the various factors—including cost, language barriers, distance to the courthouse, and lack of knowledge—that separate persons from the justice system.

The Task Force made 11 recommenda-tions to improve access to justice for all Ohioans:

• Provideageneralrevenueappropria-tion for civil legal aid in Ohio.

• Increasetheprohacvicefeefrom$150 to $300 to help fund civil legal aid.

• ImplementavoluntaryAdd-OnFeefor Attorney Registration to help fund civil legal aid.

• Continuetheefforttodevelopandimplement standardized forms.

The full report is available on the Supreme Court website. http://www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/Publications/Ac-cessJustice/FinalReport.pdf

In roundtable discussions, summit participants actively debated some of the report’s major themes, including the use of technology in the delivery of legal services, limited scope representation, pro bono services, standardized forms, and funding. In addition to former Jus-tice Yvette McGee Brown, Justice Judith French and Chief Justice O’Connor participated in the summit and pledged action by the Court to follow up on the Task Force Recommendations.

Welcome to new Lawyer Referral member: Angelina DeAnda-Wagner

Thanks to Volunteer Attorneys

As attorneys, we are all too familiar with the demands of building a law practice—time constraints, financial

pressures and the stress of finding new clients. The Toledo Bar Association recognizes those demands and offers this solution. Let us shoulder some of the burden of marketing and screening calls.

For solo or small firm attorneys, the LRIS is a valuable source of new busi-ness. Considering that some law firms spend thousands of dollars in adver-tising, the investment of LRIS mem-bership’s nominal annual fee is very affordable. LRIS advertises to a targeted market, then callers are screened and potential clients referred to LRIS panel members. There is a one-time fee for the referral, paid by the client. When you collect from this new client for services rendered, you pay a small percentage to LRIS. You gain a client and the potential for unlimited repeat business.

LRIS: Your New Partner

If you are member of a medium to large-sized law firm, participating in the LRIS provides the opportunity to build your client base and hone professional skills in your practice area. At the same time, you supply a vital community service.

The Toledo Bar Association LRIS is now accepting applications for membership for July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. A $125 application fee and proof of your professional liability insurance policy are all you need to apply for membership as a panel member and receive referrals in three subscription areas. If you have any questions on the Referral Service opera-tions, please contact Diana Lipszyc at the TBA, 419-242-4763.

By participating in the TBA Lawyer Referral program, you help strengthen confidence in the legal system. Call or email to join the Toledo Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service today.

Recently, a pro bono volunteer ran into a problem with a case. The biological father of a potential

ward was nowhere to be found. The mother, who desperately needed to become her 19-year-old son’s guardian, needed to publish for service. The cost to the client was prohibitive and her son’s behavior and mental health were worsening, making the need for a guard-ianship more imperative than ever.

A simple request to the Toledo Legal News allowed the case to proceed to the establishment of the guardianship. The Toledo Legal News graciously agreed to waive the cost of publication.

Further, Toledo Legal News indicated that it would waive fees for other pro bono cases. Volunteer attorneys can inform the Legal News that the case is pro bono when there is a need to have the costs of publication waived.

Thank you, Toledo Legal News, for stepping up and assisting pro bono clients who truly rely on the kindness of strangers.
