1 FALL BULLETIN

Sovereign (}rand Commanders

9vlessage First, I give thanks to Almighty God for giving us the opportunity to serve others. The United Supreme Council is an amazing group of men who collectively can do wonders to make a difference in all our communities, in all our cities, in all our states and in the entire world. Those who preceded us have left an awesome legacy upon which we can build, and I know we are ready for the tasks ahead of us.

Secondly, I sincerely thank the Editor, G.I.G. Edward M. Brooks, for working diligently and untiringly to ensure a timely publication of our Bulletin and I also thank each of you for your contributions to this effort. This Bulletin allows us to show and inform others about a few of the many positive things which are occurring through the United Supreme Council.

Further, I thank the Loyal Ladies who are also fully supporting us in all our endeavors. It is always good to know that our support structure is standing ready to help when needed.

As I look back on the important events that have been celebrated, I am reminded that it is important to remember our history, for it identifies who we are. Toward this end, we are working to develop a strong Black History program. Through the use of technology, we are putting in place a system to use credit cards to pay our dues and make donations to the Benevolent Foundation. We are slowly moving towards the 21st Century and with the help of our Creator, I know we will reach our goal.

ILLUSTRIOUS SOLOMON WALLA CE, 33° SOVEREIGN GRAND COMMANDER

By our actions , let us demonstrate to the communities around us that we are indeed a vital and relevant organization committed to charity, true fellowship and brotherly love. By supporting the programs of this United Supreme Council, we are faithful to our mission and not forgetting our obligations.

Cordially and Fraternally,

Illustrious Solomon Wallace, 33° Sovereign Grand Commander

5 FALL BULLETIN

We continue to maintain your Cathedral and both high ri se buildings. In fact, there was a luncheon at the Scottish Rite House for over 25 years of service. Your officers were invited and enjoyed the program. The Scotti sh Rite Tower is now about 16 years old. They have over 200 units between them and therefore are a blessing to our senior citizens. Be sure to visit the buddings whenever you are in the Philadelphia area.

The renovations and re-paving of the Cathedral parking lot is nearly complete. We had a very wet summer in Philadelphia, which caused delays in paving, as we wanted it. But as you can see in the recent photo, it is almost complete and very much in use.

It is my hope that I will perform the duties of managing and overseeing our hi storic and grandiose facility. The Cathedral is not only our headquarters but it is a shining beacon throughout the United Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Prince Hall Affili ation, Northern Jurisdiction, U.S.A. Inc. Our historical archives are loaded with memories of the many Illustrious Peers that have been elevated in the Senate Chamber. Did you know that the Cathedral has a grand library fu ll of Masoni c literature, the Sovereigns Chair, and there is a Scottish-rite degree meeting room, which is presently being used today? I encourage you to visit the Cathedral when you are in the Philadelphia area to see this stupendous facili ty?

The Cathedral is open daily for operations. However, if you are thinking about toming The Cathedral, the hours are as foll ows: Monday - Friday, 10:00AM - 3:30PM, and weekends by appointments (for large groups). FALL BULLETIN 6

Saving the African American Male: "From the Cradle to College"

A Vision - SGC Solomon Wallace, 33° 2010 - 2011 School Year Annual Reports

SGIG Dr. Clarence Stone - Director Mentoring in the United Supreme Council (USC), Prince Hall Affiliation has been successful. We are proud of our deputies, coordinators, mentors, public school executives, administrators and staff; and all who have contributed to our efforts to launch successful programs. In 2009-2010 we were able to launch tlu·ee programs in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Those programs gave 788 hours of service to our

mentees and their local school dist1icts. In 2010-2011, six programs provided services to their school districts. The six Orients/Valleys programs gave 2,317 hours of service to our youths and school districts.

This remarkable work, in a period of job loss, loss of homes, high gas and food prices, is worthy to be praised. Thank you, to all who contributed in any way large or small to help make our programs successful.

The reports follow:

Orient of Michigan/Valley of Detroit Mentoring Program Annual Report

SGIG Robert P. Lewis, 33° - Deputy of the Orient GIG Horace Jackson, 33° - Coordinator-Reporter

The Wolverine #6 Consistory Mentoring Program, for the second year, partnered with the Detroit Public School District, at Martin L. King, Jr., Senior High School. Dr. Deborah Jenkins, an excellent tum-around Principal and Mr. Richard Walker, Assistant Principal, were our local school administrators. Both provided excellent leadership and support to all of our efforts. Mr. Norman Taylor, Attendance Officer and Head Baseball Coach were also a key person in our program.

Six mentors provided service to our mentees in one-to-one sessions and in small groups. They all participated in our second Large Group Session where 30 plus students from grades 9-12 were mentored.

GIG Horace Jackson, 33°did an excellent job working with Mr. Richardson Walker, Mr. Norman Taylor and Dr. Jenkins to develop our nine mento1ing sessions.

The King High School, administration, staff, student body and the alumni sponsored a M.L. King, Jr. Legacy Parade and PreParade Program the past two years. These events were a huge success. For the fi rst time, an Annual Legacy Awards Program was held on January 12, 2011. GIG Brent Walker, 33°, a former King student, was honored as a Legacy.

The Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Michigan participated in both the Legacy

Awards Prorrram and the Parade. The Honorable Grand Master b .

Paul W. Robinson brought greetings on behalf of Masonry rn Michigan. Our Illustrious Deputy Robert P. Lewis, 33° was recuperating from surgery. We salute and thank our Deputy for his support to our program. His presentation to our mentees at our Large Group Session was an outstanding story of his life's journey. Our mentors gave 511 hours of service to our mentees and the school district.

Orient of New Jersey/Valley of Newark Mentoring Program Annual Report (1/11-5/11)

SGIG Arthur R. Crawford, 33° - Deputy of the Orient GIG Harry McDowell, 33° - Coordinator for Mentoring

The New Jersey Mentoring Program is in the city of Newark, NJ and the Y.alley of Sardonias Consistory #41. It is incorporated and operates in the Weequahic High School. The new superintendent of ewark City Public Schools, recently appointed by the governor, is Cami Anderson. The principal of Weequahic High is John Tonero. The two supp01t staff members who work with our program are Vice Principal Worley and Social Worker, Stovell. The Central Office person who really worked with us and ran the obstacles is the Supervisor for the Guidance Department, Mary Harvey. Another teacher and member of our consistory who helped to steer the process, is Frater Tisan Dawud. All staff and Fraters mentioned in our Fall Progress Report deserve our heartfelt thanks for their assistance.

The program this year, because of starting late, operated weekly. Our program for the 2010-2011 school year, gave 292 hours of service to our mentees and the Newark School District.

SGIG Arthur R. Crawford, 33° our Deputy for New Jersey and all who supp01ted us as we launched our program deserve a heartfelt thanks.

Orient of New York/Valley of Albany Mentoring Program Annual Report

SGIG Grady Edge, 33° - Deputy of the Orient GIG Dorsey M. Whitehead, 33° - Coordinator

The Albany Consistory #90 attempted to establish a program in the Albany Public School Dist1ict. Dr. Raymond Caluccielo is the Supetintendent and Ms. Linda Jackson-Chalmers, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Community Relations, was our district designee.

Our program was assigned to Albany High School; Dr. David C. McCalla is ptincipal and Mr. John Harris was his designee to the program.

GIG Dorsey M. Whitehead, 33° Coordinator and GIG Ruben C. Pugh, 33° met with the high school principal and Mr. Harris to develop a program plan. The mentees were to be from the 12th grade. After much discussion and due to the second semester coming to an end, the Consistory #90 Coordinator decided that they could not fully establish a program.

Four Fraters, GIG Ruben C. Pugh, 33°, GIG Fred Thomas, 33°, GIG Nebraska Brace, 33°, and GIG Dorsey M. Whitehead, 33° gave 49 hours of service to the students and Albany School District.

At this time, threats of budget cuts and other instabilities in the district may prohibit a mentoring program in 20 11 -2012.

7 FALL BULLETIN

I want to thank the mentors mentioned above for their support and dedication. Of course, thanks to the Deputy for New York, Grady Edge, 33° for his support.

Orient of OhioN alley of Cleveland Mentoring Program Annual Report

SGIG Sidney Broadnax, 33° - Deputy of the Orient GIG Melvin L. Russell, 33° Commander-in-Chief;

GIG Mark A. Ledger, 33°, Coordinator; GIG Leonard B. Jackson, 33°, Chairman;

SGIG Carl A. Williams, 33°, Co-Chairman

Bezaleel Consistory # 15 began its second year Mentoring Program on Wednesday, November 10, 2010. In addition to "John Adams High School", the "John F. Kennedy High School" was added to mentor.

Chief Executive Officer of the Cleveland Metrnpolitan School District (CMSD), Sublime Prince Dr. Eugene T.W. Sanders 32°, retired in February 2011. GIG Leonard B. Jackson, 33°, Chairman of our Ment01ing Program has taken over our lead position; he is the Commissioner of Athletics for the (CMSD). SGIG Carl A. Williams is Co-Chairman and GIG Mark A. Ledger is the Coordinator and Teacher for the (CMSD).

The program ran for a total of fourteen (14) weeks. 21 Bezaleel Consistory #15 mentors provided servi ce to our mentees for the school year 2010-2011 and gave a total of 1,140 hours of mentoring support.

The following high school and district staff did an outstanding job in assisting the Fraters in our mentoring program: Donald Jolly, Principal and Brian Simmons, Linkage Coordinator of John Adams High School; Jason L. Tidmore, Ptincipal of John F. Kennedy High School and Reginald Walker, (CMSD) Teacher. Thank you for your gracious and dedicated support to our program.

Orient of PennsylvaniaN alley of Philadelphia Mentoring Program Annual Report

SGIG George M. Calloway, 33° - Deputy ofthe Orient GIG Norman K. Spencer, 33° - Coordinator for Philadelphia

Our mentoring program in the Valley of Philadelphia has been a difficult but meaningful task. Dr. Stone, the national coordinator, outlined a very ambitious mentoring program for the United Supreme Council. Although we have many qualified Illustrious Fraters who could participate in the program, only a few were mentors. I would like to personally thank SGTG Eugene Saunders, 33° for his supp01t and contributions to the program, as well as all of our men tors for the 20l0-2011 school years.

Below are the key components of our mentoring program:

• For the second year, our program was with the Philadelphia Public School District

• Dr. Arlene Ackerman is Superintendent, Wilfredo Ortiz and Linda Chatt-Wayman were our Central Office liaisons

• We partnered for the second year with Fitzsimons High School. Daffy! Overton is Principal and Damien Warren is Assistant Principal and program liaison

• This year 2010-2011 we only had five mentors to participate on a regular basis; they provided 150 hours of service to our mentces.

• This year, our Program met with the snidents, for two hours on the second Friday of each month. From September 2010 through March 2010, our mentors discussed life topics and experiences with the mentees

Our positive experience in 2010 with Fitzsimons High School diminished in 2011. The school had some administrative changes that affected our program. Due to this experience, the program was moved to Kensington CAP.A. High School from April 15, 2011 through June 2, 2011. The principal , counselor and staff at Kensington High were helpful and supportive of our program.

Our Mentoting Program provided the School District of Philadelphia with 100 hours of direct service to mentees and 50 hours and indirect service. I'm thankful for the opportunity to participate in this activity and I want to acknowledge and thank our lllustrious Deputy George M. Calloway, 33 ° and all others who have given us support over the past year.

Orient of Washington/Valley of Tacoma Mentoring Program Annual Report

SGIG Daniel Lunsford, 33° - Deputy of the Orient

Deputy Daniel Lunsford, 33° reports that his Consistory's negotiations with the Tacoma Public Schools to establish mentoring programs in the District, was approved in 2010 by Superintendent Dr. Arthur 0 . Jarvis. Dr. Jarvis assigned Dave Osterhaus as his designated liaison to Deputy Lunsford and the Val1ey of Tacoma's Mentoring Program Committee.

The high schools designated for the Tacoma Mentoring Program are:

• Mount Tahoma High School - 4634 S. 74th St., Tacoma, WA 98409, (253) 571-3800

• Foss High School - 21 12 S. Tyler St., Tacoma, WA 98405 -(253) 571 -7300

• Lincoln High School - 70 I South 37th St., Tacoma, W A 98418 - (253) 571-6700

High praise is given to Dave Osterhaus, the after school liaison for mentoring programs, for his excellent support in opening doors and introducing staff to our Consistory Mentoring Program leaders.

GTG Julian HaJTis, 33° and S.P. Julius W. Brown, Jr. , 32° have been spark plugs for our mentoring programs. Frater Harris, 33° was the first to mentor Tacoma High School mentees. S. P. Julius W. Brown, Jr. 33 °, working with Dave Osterhaus who identified the key high schools above for our mentoring program. S.P. Brown, 33° did the greatest amount of administrative work for the program; he is an invaluable member of our mentoring leadership team.

The Tacoma mentors gave 175 hours of service to our mentees and the Tacoma School District. We are developing a "Welcome to High School" event for the September 2011-2012 school year mentees. We believe if we start mentoring new 9th grade students early in their high school experience - this will give us a tremendous opportunity to stick with them during their entire high school years. We will push hard to encourage them to pursue a college experience or whatever career that they deeply desire for their future. Getting our mentees from the "Cradle to College" by any means necessary is our goal.

FALL BULLETIN 8

Thank you and commendations are extended to Deputy Lunsford, 33° and to all who played a part in helping to get this program launched.

Three Orients have proposed Pilot Mentoring Programs for 2011-2012, their progress reports follow:

Orient of IllinoisN alley of Chicago Mentoring Program Progress Report

SGIG Melvin Frierson, 33° - Deputy of the Orient

The first attempt to establish a mentoring program in the Orient of Illinois has proven to be equally challenging and frustrating; but with the patience of Job and the providence of God, we are confident that our program will be most successful.

The Orient's initial program will be implemented in the Chicago Public Schools at Austin Paly Technical High School. The Principal, Tabby Williams and School Social Worker Lewis Wright are very enthusiastic about having our Praters mentor their students. Many of these young men come from homes with little or no guidance or positive role models. Positive role models are essential to help meet the realities in today's society. After working with the Central office, we have gotten our mentors' background investigations completed. Several mentors have completed an intensive training program developed by G.I.G. Charles Burns, 33° (Western #28) that will provide our fraters with valuable skills.

Thanks and commendation to Deputy Frierson, 33° and his Committee.

Orient of lndianaN alley of Gary Mentoring Program Progress Report

SGIG Robert Thomas, 33° - Deputy of the Orient GIG Harold R. Jones, 33° Coordinator

Deputy Robert Thomas, 33° and Mentoring Coordinator, Harold Jones, 33° reports that the Magic City Consistory #62 in the Valley of Gary is hard at work organizing their program for the 2011-2012 school years.

An excellent cross section of Scottish Rite Fraters make up their committee; namely, a medical doctor, an educator, a past legislator, a mortuary scientist, three Viet Nam Veterans and a past school board member. The committee has identified fraters who can be instrumental in helping to move their progran1 forward. The committee has decided to mentor 9th grade males so that they can follow these young men through their high school years.

Resource persons who will share their expertise on mentoring programs and who will provide in-service training so that the mentors will use their skills, knowledge and time wisely, have agreed to assist the program. Contact with the School District Administration will follow soon .

The Indiana Mentoring Committee and Deputy Thomas, 33° deserve thanks and commendation for their work.

Orient of Massachusetts/Valley of Boston Mentoring Program Progress Report

SGIG Henry L. Owens, 33° - Deputy of the Orient

Deputy Henry Owens', 33° Mentoring Committee in Massachusetts has been working hard to structure a program for the Valley of Boston, their selected School District. The

Committee has been in contact with the Boston Central Office staff and has received very positive feedback from their discussions. A District: Office Liaison has been assigned to work with the Committee to ensure a smooth implementation. It is the hope of the Conunittee and Deputy Owens that the Orient of Massachusetts/Valley of Boston will be able to go on line with a program during the 2011 -2012 school year. Deputy Henry Owens, 33° and his Committee deserves c01runendation for their good work.

The Orient of CO/WY /UT Host of the

1301h United Supreme Council Deputy of CO/UT/WY

SGIG Samuel Hunter, 33° Greetings to the Scottish Rite Northern Jurisdiction from the Host of the 130th Annual Session held in the Valley of Denver, Orient of Colorado, May 27 - June 1, 2011. Our heart-felt thanks to those of you who ventured westward to the Mile Hi Queen City of the Plains at the base of the snowcapped Rocky Mountains to partake in the festivities. We hope that your stay was fruitful , enjoyable, worthwhile and rewarding.

To the vast majority of our membership who missed the opportunity to attend the session, here is a recap of the convention activities for your perusal.

Friday was opening day featuring registration. That evening a Comedy Show, put on by the Colorado Orient, featuring Shed G. "Can I Vent" Garren, was the main attraction. Shed is a local comedian who is working his way into the entertainment field and was well received by the audience. He was clean, entertaining and amusing. One of his credits is having done some minor work in the Tyler Pen-y Production Corporation in Atlanta, GA.

On Saturday at 9:00 A.M. the Ladies activities began with a trip to Century Casino in Central City, Colorado, there were two buses with approximately 90 participants. The casino was nice enough to give each bus 10 door prizes to be raffled off on the way home. Fun was had by all, although we did not have any big winners. Those hotels are not built by winners. After four hours and a nice meal, both buses returned to the hotel at 3:00 P.M.

The Ladies that did not feel like they would have good luck at the casino, but love to shop, went on a shopping excursion to one of Colorado's upscale malls - Park Meadows. Park Meadows houses a lot of stores, restaurants and outlets. The ladies were given coupon books upon their arrival to the mall that was good at different stores and restaurants in the area. Ladies on this excursion had a chance to shop and eat until they dropped.

On Sunday, May 29, the primary speaker for the morning Devotional Service was the Reverend Frank M. Davis, Pastor of Zion Baptist Church, Denver, Colorado, who delivered an inspiring message on Brotherhood. The evening Memorial Services for our Departed Brothers featured an inimitable delivery of the Eulogy by our renowned S.G.l.G. Rev. B -52 is the only four engine bomber whose crew shot down a MIG fighter in the Viet Nam war.

On Monday, May 30th , the Ladies and a few men embarked on a trip to the Air Force Academy with a guided tour by S.G.T.G. Loran Smith. Major points of interest were a static B-

52, Arnold Hall, the Chapel, the Tuskegee Airman Statue and lunch with some of the Cadets. The B-52 is unique in that it is the only four engine bomber whose crew (tail gunner) shot down an enemy MIG fighter jet in the Viet Nam war.

The Orient of Colorado had the pleasure of conducting the degree work on Monday in the official session. This team consisted of the following; Grand Inspectors General; Raymond Black, Thomas Powell, Hadley Evans, Stefon Atmore, Terence

Jackson, Kei th Weston, At1uro Delos Reyes, Thomas Mickens and Gary Thomas. Arnold Hall was named for General Harold Arnold, the Father of the U.S. Air Force. His opposition to blacks in the service is well documented and it is fitting to see the bronzed statue of the

Tuskegee Airmen sitting on the Honor Plaza close by. The Hall also houses some memorabilia of the Tuskegee Airmen era. The tour that left at 8:30 AM. returned to the hotel at 3: 30 P.M. after a full fun-filled day. Grand Inspector General Garland Osborne chaired the Souvenir Journal committee which had the assistance of the entire jurisdiction, Praters and Golden Circle, in producing a 99% all color book.

The Transportation Committee under the direction of Grand Inspector General Rueben Dallas and his faithful members labored long and tirelessly to provide assistance to our guests. It is the hope of the Orient of Colorado that each and everyone 's experienced a pleasant and enjoyable visit. It was our pleasure to host you.

The Commanders of the Rite of Mountain & Plains Consistory #33, held its 7th annual Spring Banquet on Apiil 30, 20 11 , at the Double Tree Hotel honoring Grand Inspector General Raymond Black of Mountain and Plains Consistory #33 and Grand Inspector General James Sauls of Pikes Peak Consistory #8 I. This function is of tremendous value to the m-ea as it donates a minimum of $ 1,000.00 to students for educational expenses. 111ustrious Elvin R. Caldwell , Jr. , is Vice President.

The Ninety-sixth annual session of the Colorado Council of Deliberation will be held October I, 2011, in Colorado Springs, CO. at the Crown Plaza Hotel.
