Winter is coming and as we are warm in

our centrally heated houses, with plenty

of jumpers, clothes and hot water, lets

spare a thought for our brothers and sis-

ters who have been turned out from there

homes due to violence and oppression.

Our Knitter Natter club provides the op-

portunity to learn a new skill in a relaxed

and welcoming environment, as well as

benefitting the Ummah. We will be In sha

Allah making patchwork blankets for

Syria on Thursday mornings 10am-12pm.

If you are unable to make these sessions,

you can still contribute to the patchworks

by making your own 20cm by 20cm

squares which we will incorporate in to

the blankets.

Our Children, Our Future

Our children are an amanah from Allah.

We have a responsibility to care for them,

nurture them and teach them Islam in the

best manner possible. However often as

parents we feel ourselves slipping. We

do not have the experience or knowledge

to cope with behaviours or situations, or

we are not sure the best way to handle

things or the reasons why situations esca-

late.

This does not make us bad parents. It

does not mean we are failing. Everyone

needs a little help sometimes. At NILC we

understand this. Even if currently parents

are not facing issues with their children’s

behaviours it is always good to feel reas-

sured and prepared.

This is why we are offering Islamic Par-

enting workshops starting with a taster

session on Wed 18th September, 1-3pm

and continuing on Thursdays from 26th

September 1-3pm. Please call Naila on

07852882428 to register.

Souk for Syria

NILC will be holding a sale in order to

raise funds to buy an ambulance and

medical supplies which will be driven on

the Human Aid Syria convoy in Decem-

ber. We are asking people to contribute

good quality items such as unwanted gifts

and Abayahs, and books as well as food

and cakes that we will be able to sell on

the day InshaAllah.

We are also looking for volunteers who

can help us with the organisation and

delivery of the event, such as face paint-

ing, Mehndi, kids games, working on

stalls and so on.

If you may be able to help please contact

sister Naila on 07852882 428

The Souk will be on 21st September from

2.30—6.30 pm and is open to all.

The people of Syria desperately need our

help, now is the time to unite, put our

differences aside and do our small part in

contributing to the aid effort.

May Allah grant the Ummah Unity,

strength and victory.

At NILC we aim to extend children’s

learning. To teach them how to learn and

not what to learn. With this in mind, this

term we have given the older children in

the Madrassah essays to write on particu-

lar subjects. The topics are:

Azhar - The importance of being honest.

Eshan - The importance of respecting par-

ent.

Mumen - The importance of staying calm.

Mahim - The importance of respecting

brothers and sisters.

Mubeen - The importance of timekeeping.

Jawad - The importance of teamwork.

Samirah - The importance of correct wudu. Humayra - Essay on Prophet Isa a.s.

Mounira - Essay on Prophet Yunus a.s.

We will be publishing these in future editions of

TC

Islamic Art

Madrassah Projects

At NILC we work towards the creation of

a sustainable and cohesive community.

This involves working with partner or-

ganisations such as counseling and

health. This September we will be hosting

Newham’s Maternity Services Liason

Committee and Mother’s Support group.

The MSG is a forum for mothers to discuss

issues that have effected themselves, or

those they know during their interactions

with the health services during preg-

nancy and birth. The main issues are then

taken forward and presented to health

professionals at MSLC meetings.

Members are also offered regular train-

ing and development sessions, as well as

some opportunities for paid employment

in children's centres and community

groups.

This term the Mother’s Support Group

will be on 16th September 10:30—12:30

and the MSLC meeting will be on the 25th

of September 10:30—12:30 at NILC.

These sessions are open to everyone, so

if you are interested please do come

along and see how you can help shape

the future of health services in Newham.

You can contact the chair of Newham

MSLC on [email protected]

Due to the prohibition on drawing living

things in Islam, much of Islamic Art has

always been based on calligraphy and

geometry. We will be continuing this

tradition by offering a calligraphy work-

shop run by renound calligraphist Artistic

Alauddin Fatima. These workshops will

cover basic calligraphy techniques and

canvas making, and also help you to de-

velop your unique style, so you are able

to put your own stamp on your art.

These workshops will be £10 a session

and materials will be provided.

Starting 20th September, 10am-12am.

Ilm Adventures Blog—On adventure learning together!

One very rainy Friday morning, two children

and their mother didn’t know whether they

would be able to go outside. They wondered if

the rain would stop in time to go to Jumuah

(Friday) prayers.

They waited and

waited and waited

for the rain to stop

but alas! It kept

falling!

The two children

and their mother

decided to listen

to a special story

while they waited

for the rain to

stop, a story of a

Prophet called

Yunus…..

And just as my little introduction suggests that is exactly what R, A and myself did one rather wet Friday morning, we listened to an audio book by Miraj Audio. The story was of Prophet Yunus (Alayhis salam) and the Giant Fish.

I can honestly say we thoroughly enjoyed lis-

tening to the story. We listened to the music-

free version but there were many sound ef-

fects in the background that made the story

come to life. Usually I am not a fan of Non-

Muslims narrating Islamic themed stories or

even the translation of the Qur’an due to the

pronunciation of Arabic words, but the ac-

tress, Sandy Walsh who narrated the story,

did justice to the story

and also pronounced

Allah pretty well. She

was also very good at

acting out all the parts

which made the charac-

ters seem real and very

interesting to the chil-

dren and again, life like.

The story itself was well

written, gripping and

true to the Qur’anic nar-

rative of Prophet Yunus

(alayhis salam). The

children listened atten-

tively which is definitely

a plus as they're both usually very active. R

and A both enjoyed the audio book and I be-

lieve would also enjoy all the rest as there are

many titles available to download. At just over

36 minutes long the story is at the correct length

to keep to the children engaged.

Al-Bukhaari (520) narrated that Buraydah said:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah

be upon him) said: “Whoever does not pray ‘Asr, his good

deeds will be annulled“

When it comes to Ramadan, so many of us pray and

fast. We know it is required of us. We are conscious

of Allah, of His SWT wrath, and His SWT mercy, we

love Him and fear Him.

Even those who do not pray at all the rest of the year

will pray in Ramadan. Part of the reasoning of this is

as we want our efforts in fasting to be rewarded. We

Don’t want to go the whole day without food and

drink. We struggle and strive in order to receive a

reward from Allah, we want His SWT mercy and

blessings. We want our duas to be answered, and in

this holy month, we understand that prayer is re-

quired in order for our desires to please Allah and

benefit from ibadah to be a reality.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen was asked in Fataawa al-

Siyaam (p. 87) about the ruling on the fasting of one

who does not pray.

He replied:

“The fast of one who does not pray is not valid and is

not accepted, because the one who does not pray is

a kaafir and an apostate, because Allaah says

(interpretation of the meaning):

“But if they repent [by rejecting Shirk (polytheism) and ac-

cept Islamic Monotheism], perform As-Salaah (Iqaamat-as-

Salaah) and give Zakaah, then they are your brethren in

religion”

[al-Tawbah 9:11]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be

upon him) said:

“Between a man and shirk and kufr stands his giving up

prayer.” Narrated by Muslim, 82. And he (peace and bless-

ings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The covenant that sepa-

rates us from them is prayer; whoever gives up prayer is a

kaafir.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2621; classed as saheeh by

al-Albaani inSaheeh al-Tirmidhi.

http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/49698”

However what we seem to be failing to truly under-

stand and internalise is that this ruling is not just for

Ramadan. The one who does not pray, all his good

deeds will be invalid;

“Whoever abandons the ‘Asr prayer, his

deeds of worship become void.”

This means that our striving, our dawah, our smiling

as it is a sunnah, saying salaam, looking after our

children, being good to our husbands, EVERYTHING

that we do, is of no use to us in akhirah if we do not

pray. SubhanAllah.

It is pointless being seen as a person who inspires and

does good, it is pointless giving sadaqah, fasting, hajj

EVERYTHING is pointless if we do not pray.

It is pointless as it will not benefit us in the akhirah.

Everything we do should be first with the intention to

FAREWELL RAMADAN ACCEPTANCE OF GOOD DEEDS

Page 15: TC 5 2

please Allah. But if we don’t pray, we don’t please

Him SWT.

Think about this, take a moment to digest.

All the good deeds you do in a day. From making

your husband a cup of tea, to feeding your kids, to

smiling at your neighbour, to sharing beneficial

knowledge. Think about all the things you do in a

day.

What potential for reward is there?

What are you missing out on?

In Ramadan we understand that this is the month

of mercy and blessings and we are afraid of miss-

ing out on the rewards.

However Allah SWT in His mercy, has given us so

many opportunities out of Ramadan to gain his

pleasure. In every action we do, every moment of

the day there is an opportunity to gain his pleas-

ure.

Giving £1 on layalatul Qadr may be like giving £1

every day for 83 years, but every moment of every

day not in Ramadan we still have opportunities

that are just as important to our scales of deeds.

For every intention to do good there is a chance

we will be rewarded.

By not praying we are throwing this down the pan.

We are no different in the merit of our deeds then

those who do not believe in Allah.

This hadith is seen by the scholars as a severe de-

terrent. SO let us heed it. Let it deter us.

Let us be just as worried about the struggles and

deeds we do daily being accepted, as our efforts

in fasting being accepted.

It makes no sense not to be.

This is a reminder to myself first.

May Allah guide us and

strengthen us, May He SWT allow

us to continue the good habits

we have upheld during Ramadan

during the rest of the year. May

He increase our iman, and accept

our ibadah in all that we do. May

He SWT guide us and keep us on

the straight path and grant us

jannah.

Bismillahi irahman irahim

A short poem for my sisters in Islam, and a reminder to myself first and fore-most. May Allah forgive me for any wrongdoing I may have said knowingly and unknowingly, Ameen.

Brother, who is your first love? - There arrives a momentous time in our lives

Where we may ponder deeply about becoming wives The blessing of sharing our life with someone forever,

Is something we aspire to truly treasure. But who exactly do we want to find?

A brother who is handsome, funny and kind? Or should we be thinking beyond that and look at his Deen,

And his belief in Islam, in the apparent and unseen. For if we as sisters are met with a brother

Who tells us he loves us like no other, Then what does that say about his fear of the Most High?

Is that not questionable, do we not ask why? He feeds a relationship that is low key and hidden, Why is it taken so lightly, a thing that's forbidden?

And if he speaks of promises and spending time alone Going out together and late nights on the phone,

Do we know shaytan is the third one present? In the eyes of Al Basir, is that at all pleasant? For if a brother neglects this serious matter, Then what concern is there for the Akhira?

Will he simply let it shatter?

Page 19: TC 5 2

Rather seek a man who places Allah first on his list, That if something goes against Al Malik, he too will desist.

That he takes great care in abiding by the laws of Al Hakam, And rushes to avoid the fire of Jahannum. His character we see is of the utmost best

His efforts for Islam are many, not going to too much rest. For the dunya for him is a momentary place,

And the Deen is something he would rather chase. Oh sisters, we must make du'a for a man like this As in sha Allah such a marriage is filled with bliss,

Who respects you by seeking your Wali first, And one day together, in the Deen you're immersed.

For unitedly seeking closeness to Al Mutakabir,

Is a marriage we should strive for, as it is so dear. Written by Adriana Kimbi for NILC’s Youth Blog DeenDirections.Wordpress.com If you would like to contribute please send your article suggestions to [email protected]

Dear Sister Afshan Asalamu Alaikum Alhamdullilah the first parenting workshop was excellent. Very informative and thoroughly planned. Handouts were excellent. Tips and advice given through various case studies were very beneficial. The interactive approach through a 2 way discussion and via group work reinforced concepts/theory. Mind was always kept alert and engaged. Parents sharing each others opinions and experiences helped understand concepts. The flexibility to be able to say anything at any point kept atmosphere very relaxed and comfortable. And above all your approach was very friendly and sincere mashaAllah, which enabled the audience to benefit alhamdullilah. Very positive feedback from sisters who attended workshop also, who are already practicing the tips given by yourself! May Allah SWT reward you abundantly. Ameen Looking forward to your marriage workshop with us InshaAllah!

Asalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, I am a counsellor with over 26 years experience of providing various types of counselling all within an Islamic framework. I currently practice in East London, but am also available for telephone and Skype consultations for those further afield. My fields of specialty include: Marriage Counselling Youth Counselling Confidence Building & Assertiveness Training Dealing with Depression Mentoring Mediation I began my career as a Nursery Nurse and Youth Worker and am qualified in both. From this, I went on to run various support groups for women within my local community in East London, working with the Local Authority in Newham assisting and supporting women in cri-sis who were suffering from problems such as domestic violence and mental health is-sues. My passion for helping others led me to gain my Certificate in Counselling, further to which I have undertaken training in the fields of mediation, domestic violence, self-harm and NLP. In addition to my counselling, I am currently running support groups for Muslim women, tackling issues such as coping with stress and depression, building self-confidence, dealing with relationships within marriage and families, health related issues and relaxation tech-niques. I also undertake workshops on marriage and good housekeeping skills as well as assisting in life coaching and assertiveness seminars. After 26 years of running support groups and counselling women, I have come to under-stand that many underlying issues are linked to childhood trauma and these have mani-fested in the adults that I see. These issues of parenti g urgently need to be addressed in our community and with this In mind, I will be running Islamic Positive Parenting workshops insha’Allah. My many years of experience, coupled with my approach from an Islamic perspective has enabled me to tailor my counselling to suit my clients individual needs and by Allah's per-mission, I have many clients who have found counselling has allowed them to lead happier, more emotionally stable and fulfilling lives.

recommendations, everything. Mashaallah. I'm liking forward to the other sessions. May Allah reward u

both.

Mashaallah, I did enjoy the workshop and I found it very beneficial mashaallah. I liked that it was interactive. Sister Afshan has experienced many things mashaallah and she is able to talk about alot of aspects for one thing.

The Submissive Wife

‘Submissive Wife’ is a term which is likely to

send shockwaves through feminist circles and

bring feelings of horror, defiance, and at the

very least, cause doubtful sideways glances be-

tween even the least radical of women amongst

us.

However, lets take a look at what the term

really means; take the blinkers off our 20th

Century, feminist eyes (for without doubt we

have confined ourselves with these social con-

straints) and view the ‘Submissive Wife’ from

an Islamic perspective.

The phrase ‘Submissive Wife’ brings to mind

an image of a passive woman; an image from

which we instinctively recoil. Understanding

passivity only in its negative form, we see a

broken, voiceless woman, under the thumb of

a controlling husband . However, this cer-

tainly does not have to be the case. We can

turn this phrase around and make it into a

positive by endeavouring to understand that

these are simply words on which we place

meaning and the true context lies within our

understanding of what is required of us, in Is-

lamic terms, within a marriage.

In Islam we understand that the roles of both

spouses are clearly defined and husband and

wife are beautifully described in the Qur’an as

‘garments’ to each other. Now we must ask

ourselves, what do garments do; what is their

purpose? Let’s reflect on this…

Garments conceal those parts of us which we

would not want to be revealed, they comfort,

protect and beautify us and they are held to-

gether with tiny, but strong stitches which pre-

vent them from falling apart.

If each spouse concentrates on the fine details,

giving them their due attention and each one

works hard to keep the garment together, (yes,

even repairing when necessary, and not letting

the garment fall apart!), then these details be-

come what I call the cement of a marriage.

Their components being:

Love

Respect

Consideration

Sincerity

Taking care of your obligations

Last but not least, each one recognising and

surrendering to the roles which Allah (swt) has

ordained for us. For, He (swt) has told us

‘They (your wives) are your garment and you are a garment for them.’ (2:187). And surren-dering to Allah (swt) will always bring about positive changes in our lives. Written by Afshan Khan Taken from her blog AfshanKhan1.Wordpress.com

What is Tajweed?

The word "tajweed" means to improve, make better.

Tajweed of the Holy Qur'an is the knowledge and application of the rules of recitation so the reading of the Qur'an is as the Prophet Mohammed peace and blesings be upon him, recited. All of us can always improve our recitation. Un-

fortunately many do not know proper tajweed. In the days

of the Prophet, peace and blessing upon him, there was no need for the study of tajweed because they talked with what is now known as tajweed; in other words, it was natural for them. Now, over 14 centuries later, colloquial Arabic has changed radically from the classical Arabic with which the Qur'an was revealed, and Arabs have to study tajweed, just in the same way that non-Arabs do. The first step is finding a qualified Qur'an teacher who will listen to you and point out your mistakes, and help you practice fixing them. You will need to learn the Arabic letters and vowels too. At NILC we aim to provide this. Our Mu’allim at Madrassah are fully qualified from Arabic institutions, and all teachers who come to work with us are required to have their Ta-jweed checked.

Tajweed

Beautifying the Quran

Page 41: TC 5 2

" if someone taught you Quran without

Tajweed, you should ask him for a refund!!

(Imam Jazari in his Fatawa)

One who wishes to learn a science needs to know its principles so

that he will gain insight into the sought science. There are several

principles in the science of tajweed that should be understood:

1. Its definition

By linguistic definition: Betterment

Applied definition: Articulating every letter from its articulation point

and giving the letter its rights and dues of characteristics.

Rights of the letters are its required characteristics that never leave

it. The dues of the letters are its presented characteristics that are

present in it some of the time, and not present at other times. i.e.

the medd, idgham

2. Its formation

The words of the Glorious Qur'an and some said Honorable Hadiths

also.

3. Its fruits

It is preserving the tongue from mistakes in pronunciation of the

Glorious Qur'an during reading.

4. Its precedence

It is one of the most honored of sciences and one of the best of them

due to its relation to Allah’s words.

5. Its place within the sciences

It is one of the Islamic Law sciences that are related to the Glorious

Qur'an.

6. Its founder

The rule setter from the practical

point of view is the Messenger of

Allah because the Qur'an was

revealed to him from Allah, the

most High, with tajweed, and he,

was instructed on it from the

Trustworthy, Jibreel, peace be

upon him, and taught it to his

companions, who then taught it to

their followers and so on until it

came to us by these chains. The

rule setters from the scientific

point of view are the scholars of

Qur'anic sciences, such as Abu

'Ubaid Al-Qasim bin Sallaam.

7. Its precept

Knowledge of tajweed is fardh kifayaah, meaning some of the Muslim

community must know it, and its application is fardh ‘ain, required by

all Muslims (men and women) who have the complete Qur'an or part

of it memorized, even if only one surah.

8. Reasons for its rules

Guarding the Glorious Qur'an and preserving it from distortion. The

Arabs mixed with non-Arabs after the spread of Islam, and the Mus-

lims feared that the Arab tongue would become corrupted with this

intermixing. It then became mandatory for rules to be put down that

would preserve the recitation of the Qur'an from mistakes, and guar-

antee the reader of the Qur'an integrity of pronunciation.

9. Its principles

The knowledge of tajweed is contingent on four matters: 1. Knowledge of the articulation points of the letters 2. Knowledge of the characteristics of the letters 3. Knowledge of what rules change in the letters due to the order of letters 4. Exercising the tongue and a lot of repetition.

We are also starting Tajweed classes for teen-

age girls aged 11-16 on weekends 1pm—

1:45pm and Women’s Tajweed classes on

Mondays 2-3pm.

I will be attempting to climb Mount Snowdon in order to raise money for Newham Islamic Learning Centre. This Centre provides various activities to their local community as well as a fully functioning madrassah. I am hoping to raise enough money so that we can purchase the following.. Revamp the madrassah as its in a poor state at the moment, purchase of islamic reading / teaching materials in-cluding Qur'an and to also pay for madrassah staff so that the centre can fully function and be main-tained for years to come. The Centre also provides tuition and home work help as well and martial arts and organised swimming events. Please try and help no matter how much you donate it all helps. Do not close the door of opportunity to claim Jannah.. for many of us there may be no more doors. May Allah accept it from us all.

Br Hanan Khan, a former NILC student, will be running from Manor Park to Brighton (in sha Allah) on the 30th of Sep-tember for our very own Newham Islamic learning Centre. He wishes to enable others to benefit from the support and guidance he received at NILC, and help us to remain in operation. Some of our staff team will also be walking from Lon-don to Brighton (58 miles) on this day. I know my brothers and sisters have donated generously in Ramadan to various causes (home and abroad). However, there comes a time when we have to come together to support causes on our very own doorstep. If I didn’t need your support, I wouldn’t ask you. Brothers and sisters with Hikmah and empathy for The Ummah, now is the time that we need your help to keep NILC going. I pray to Allah that I can continue to help children and families within our community but I need all of you to dig deep and donate. Time will tell the benefit in sha Allah to the local community of the work we are doing and what impact NILC has on bridging people from various backgrounds and bringing them closer together. What do we offer: Madrassah/Qur’an classes, Sisters Halaqas, Sisters Tajweed classes, Homework Help, Support for families and support for youngsters and many other initiatives. Why NILC? NILC is a place that Muslims can go to for help and Alhamdulillah is expanding on many fronts and we need your help to make sure that we can c ontinue to operate and deliver. I could have chosen the nice and easy life but I suppose someone has to rise to the challenge and make change from within, from within a community. So I end with a quote:

When the light has sharply faded And you have lost your way Let another's love guide you It can turn the blackest night into day. And for many: NILC is the Centre/ Madrassah where they can find that s upport and comfort and they can be helped to find their way. May Allah reward each everyone of you for your efforts but more for your intentions. Wa asalam Newham Islamic Learning Centre 07949641815

In the Name of Allah the most great and high:

I have been working for Newham Islamic Learning Centre for a while now. I believe that when we teach our kids about Islam its not just merely reading Qaidah and memorising. Islam also teaches us to be happy and joyful within the boundaries of (Allah swt). The experience we have with young Muslim students is excellent here. Recently we have been taking kids to enjoy days out in the park. This has made me gain a perspective and brought about a realisation of the impor-tance of play to childrens learning and development. The kids enjoy these outings very much and they

help me get to know them and bond with them.

My thoughts are that we need more of these outgoing activities in our Is-lamic schools and to be more

interactive with our students. Lets make it fun and different!

Our Prophet SAW enjoyed being with children and gave them alot of at-tention because he knew they are the future of our Ummah who will carry our beacon of Islam for generations to come. We need to follow his exam-ple in the love, care, attention and education we give to, not just our own

children, but all the children in our community.

Support NILC

Newham Islamic Learning Centre exists to support the

communities we live in. We aim to build the believers,

mind, body and soul through our numerous community

intitiatives.

We want the children and families in our area to be able

to positively contribute to the society we live in.

Abu Musa (May Allah bepleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah said, "The relationship of the be-

liever with another believer is like (the bricks of) a

building, each strengthens the other.'' He illustrated

this by interlacing the fingers of both his hands. [Al-

Bukhari and Muslim].
