There’s little escapingthe recent publicityaround the newConsumer RightsAct 2015 whichbrought better rightsfor consumers onfaulty goods.
But whilst this is great newsfor shoppers how doesthis affect businesses?
right to reject
If a product or service is faultythen the consumer now hasan initial right to reject thegoods and claim a full refundwithin 30 days of delivery. Thebuyer can also chose whetherto have the item repaired orreplaced instead however, ifthis is not possible then thetrader can refuse and thenthe consumer has a right to arefund or to keep the productat a reduced price. A refundor reduction also applies if arepair or replacement doesn’twork as overall, the trader onlyhas one chance to rectify thesituation and this has to bedone within a reasonable time.
If the consumer has had theproduct for more than sixmonths since delivery (onemonth, if it is a car), then thetrader can deduct part of theprice based on the amountof use of the product.
With services, the consumercan require the service tobe performed again, withina reasonable time, withoutsignificant inconvenienceand at the trader’s expenseor can ask for a reduction inthe price. There is no formulafor calculating the reduction, but it can be up to 100%.
digital content
This is the first time paid-for digital content has beenproperly addressed inconsumer legislation and mustbe of satisfactory quality, fitfor purpose and as described. If not, a consumer has theright for it to be replaced orrepaired (although there is nolimit of the amount of timesit can be repaired) or seek areduction in the price (of up to100% in appropriate cases). The consumer can also obtaina repair or compensationfor any damage done to
any digital device that thecontent was uploaded on.
unfair terms
A new expanded “grey list”of potentially unfair termsin contracts has also beenproduced. Terms included onnotices to consumers (ratherthan within written terms)and any price information, including extra charges, haveto be prominent. So ensurethat any written terms ornotices are reviewed andupdated, customer servicepolicies or practices arecompliant and that all staffare trained on the new rules.

PETSThinking of buying a hamster?Which type should you choose? As one of the most popularsmall pets in the UK, hamsterstake pride of place in manyhomes. They can make a greatfirst pet for children, althoughthey do not tolerate roughhandling, so you need to makesure that younger ones treatthem gently.dwarf vs golden hamstersNot many people know thatyou can buy dwarf hamstersas an alternative to the more commonly known Syrian, or golden hamster. Syrian
hamsters live for 2-3 years onaverage, and are very solitaryin nature. They should be kepton their own in a cage, as theydisplay a strong tendency tofight with other hamsters.Dwarf hamsters grow toapproximately 8cm in length. They look extremely cute, but beware if they escapetheir cage – they can be verydifficult to catch! This type ofhamster is not as solitary as its golden counterpart, but even so it is advisable to check with
the breeder or pet shop whether two or more hamsters would mix. Caring for yourhamsterHamsters are usually bought
between the ages of four andeight weeks. Care will involvecleaning their cage, providingthe correct type of food, aswell as making sure they areentertained when you areasleep.Hamsters love to climb and runaround, and these activitiesare essential for their health. They’ll need a large cage witha wheel and other toys such ascardboard tubes. Wooden toysare also good for keeping theirteeth short.http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/advice/small-animal-care-advice/hamster-care-advice/caring-for-your-hamsterhttp://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/advice/small-animal-care-advice/hamster-care-advice/are-hamsters-the-right-animal-for-you

3. Turn the dough onto a well floured surface and knead for5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. At first the doughwill be quite sticky so add more flour as necessary.
4. Flatten out the dough and knead in the raisins, cherriesand peel until just combined. Place the dough in a lightlyoiled bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warmplace for about 1 hours, or until doubled in size.
5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for1-2 minutes, then roll out to a 25cm square. Shape themarzipan into a sausage shape and place down thecentre of the dough. Fold one side over to cover themarzipan then repeat with the other side, overlappingin the centre. Seal the ends. Place seam-side down ona greased baking sheet. Cover with oiled cling film andleave in a warm place until doubled in size. Preheat theoven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas 5.
6. Bake the stollen for 35-45 minutes until golden andsounds hollow when tapped underneath. Brush the hotstollen all over with melted butter and roll in the icingsugar to coat. Leave to cool.

Hidden phrase: At Christmas, all roadslead home. - Marjorie Holmes
[email protected] 0118 9886070 www.thatchamconnections.co.uk 31
With Christmas fastapproaching it’s worthwhiletrying to boost your income tocover some of the cost ratherthan over-using your creditcard. So to avoid a huge bill inJanuary and get the New Yearoff to a good start, try one ortwo of these ideas and generatesome extra cash.
use cashback sites whenbuying your presentsIf you like to shop online atChristmas, you might besurprised by just how muchcash you can get back whenusing sites such as Quidcoand TopCashBack. There’sno charge to sign up, anddepending on the itempurchased you can get between3% and 10% of your moneyback.
generate extra cash on eBayand amazonNot only will you declutterand make space for the nextinflux of presents, sellingitems online can generatesome much-needed extramoney at this time of year. There are hundreds of eBaycategories, and once you getinto a routine of photographingand describing your items, it’spossible to significantly boostyour Christmas budget.Amazon is great for sellingbooks, CDs and DVDs that
you no longer want, but theyalso offer hundreds of differentitem categories within theirmarketplace. If you have a lot ofbooks to sell it can be quicker tolist them on Amazon rather thaneBay, as all you need to do isinput the ISBN or title. The sitethen searches for the book andautomatically adds postage,so all you need to do is write ashort description.
use the popularity of localfacebook pagesMany people use Facebook tosell goods locally. It works like aclassified ad – you list your itemand local people come roundto view it before purchasingwith cash. The local onlinegroups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-chargewhich saves you money incomparison with eBay andAmazon.
Become a mystery shopperIf you’ve got time to spare, thiscan be a lucrative sideline andoffers a great deal of variety.Depending on the mysteryshopping company, you couldbe carrying out a covert visit toa store, ordering a sandwichin Subway or checking out theservice in your local bank. You’ll need to fill in a reportonline following each visit, and photograph or scan yourreceipts as proof that you’ve
carried it out. Make sure thatyou read the instructionsthoroughly before you set out, however, as you won’t get paidif you don’t follow them to theletter.
Turn your hobby into abusinessThe UK arts and craftsscene has risen massively inpopularity, and there is a rangeof websites where you can sellyour items. Folksy is one of thebiggest of these in the UK, andoffers lots of help to set up youraccount. If you prefer to sell in person, however, try a Christmas craftfair in your local area – thereshould be lots of trade and ithelps that people can see thequality of items first-hand.You’ll probably find that yourlocal school or garden centrehold a craft event leading up toChristmas. Alternatively, biggervenues such as National Trustproperties or stately homesin your area are also popularlocations for craft fairs all yearround. These are just a few ideas forboosting your income – trypicking one or two and youmight find that you’ve got somemoney to spare in January.http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/make-money

All ourteachers are experienced andhighly qualified. They have

Children may join us when theyare 2.25 years and transfer totheir next school when they are5 years old. Each child has a‘key-person’ who guides andobserves their learning anddevelopment, maintains a veryclose relationship with parentsand carers, and gives regularfeedback. Each term we havea parent/teacher discussionevening when their child’sdetailed records and their‘Learning Journey’ are shared. We also have Open Eveningswhen parents, prospectiveparents and interestedprofessionals may learn moreabout the Montessori activities
Montessori is an approach toearly education that focuseson the immense capacity ofchildren to absorb informationwhen given the freedom andindependence to learn at theirown appropriate pace. DrMaria Montessori’s belief inthe potential and uniquenessof children empowered herdevelop an educationalapproach that appreciateshow children’s thought
processes differ from thoseof adults. Her insights withregard to child developmenthave been enormouslyinfluential all over the world, and more recently throughoutmainstream education, whichhas gradually accepted manyof her practices. What makesthis approach different andwhat makes it work so wellis that it is based on a deepunderstanding of the way childlearn - through choosing, trying and doing themselves. When allied to the speciallydeveloped materials in aprepared environment, andthe close observation andguidance of the teachers, this leads to an enormouslypowerful, confidence-buildingapproach to learning.

In Flanders Fields John McCrae’
In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still
bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunsetglow, loved and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: to you from failinghands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high.if ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep,
though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
Lest we Forget The eleventh hour ofthe eleventh day of theeleventh month. Why
we still remember.
Remembrance Sundayin the United Kingdom of GreatBritain and Northern Irelandis a day “to commemoratethe contribution of Britishand Commonwealth militaryand civilian servicemen andwomen in the two WorldWars and later conflicts”.
It is held on the secondSunday in November, the Sunday nearest to 11November, Armistice Day,
the anniversary of the end ofhostilities in the First WorldWar at 11 a.m. in 1918.
Why the poppy?Scarlet poppies grow wild allover western Europe whereverthe soil has been disturbed. The battles of the First WorldWar churned up such vastareas of earth that millionsof poppies germinated andbloomed, often around thebodies of the fallen soldiers.
Why the twominute silence? It was on the eleventhhour of the eleventh dayof the eleventh month thatthe guns of World War 1fell silent. Four years offighting and devastationfinally ended. The followingyear ceremonies ofremembrance took placeon what was knownas Armistice Day.*

Accident? YouMean CollisionIain Betson learns there are noaccidents on Britain’s roads.
Speaking to a Highways Agency officerthe other day, I was intrigued to learn thatthe emergency services now do not class“incidents” on the road as “accidents”, butas “collisions”. Previously, they would haveattended a “Road Traffic Accident” (RTA). Nowthey attend a “Road Traffic Collision” or RTC.Why the subtle change in wording? Well, theuse of the word “accident” implies somethingthat was unexpected, unforeseen or that “justhappened”. And calling these incidents assuch has been used as a defence in a courtof law.
“Yes your honour. I know I was clocked by thespeed camera doing 60mph in a 30mph zone.It is true I was pulled by the fire crew from mywrecked car that was part of the multiple pile-up outside the primary school at going hometime. And I know my car was subsequentlyfound to have four bald tyres, no insuranceand dodgy brakes. But the whole event wasclassed as a traffic accident, so you can seeI couldn’t have foreseen any of it happening. So, therefore, I am innocent of all charges.”
Accident or incident. Collision or comingtogether. You say tomaytoe and I say tomato.
It may be interpretation but, ultimately, theresults are the same. If we all took a littlemore consideration and, dare I say, care inour driving, then I think it’s likely the number of“collisions” our already stretched emergencyservices have to attend would be reduced. With, of course, a corresponding drop in thenumber of people killed or seriously injured.**Department of Transport figures for 2014: 1,775killed; 22,807 seriously injured.

Who doesn’t enjoy sinkingtheir teeth into a delicious,flavour-packed, superblyjuicy apple or pear? Mmm!But if you want the ultimatein gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, then the fruitneeds to be freshly pickedand sun-warmed - so growyour own and you can alsosave yourself a few bob, havefun and make some goodlooking additions to yourgarden, even when space islimited. There’s no need tohave a massive plot or anorchard to grow fruit trees…
You can grow fruit trees insurprisingly small spaces, especially if you don’t growthem in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training theminto espaliers (so that theyhave several sets of horizontal‘arms’), cordons (as singlemain stems grown at anangle) or fans (with branchestrained into a fan shape)means that you can growmany varieties of apples andpears up against a suitablevertical surface such as awall, fence or set of sturdywires.
You could also train fruits likeapples as ‘step-overs’ - thisjust means trained so theymake a neat edging for a bedor border, about 45cm or soabove ground level. A step-over apple basically goes upto a height of about 30cm andis then trained so that it formstwo horizontal ‘arms’. Theylook great when in flower andwill even bear a smallish cropof fruit along the arms. Trystep-overs around the edge ofyour vegetable plot or flowerbed.
Alternatively, why not makea real feature of fruit and usea tree to create a decorativeand, later on, a productivearch? Buy an inexpensivebare-root cordon (straightstem) or a ‘whip’ fruit tree ofyour favourite variety, pair itwith another variety that is asuitable pollinator (check withthe nursery) and plant one oneach side of the arch, trainingthem in as they grow. It willlook great, phenomenallypretty when covered inblossom in spring, and after afew years will bear tasty fruittoo.
But what if you don’t haveany open ground, beds orborders in your backyard stylegarden? Provided you get theright rootstock (see below) itis quite possible to grow fruittrees in large containers. Thecontainer needs to be as bigas possible - a half-barrelat least - and must havedrainage holes kept clearusing a few inches of brokenchina or ‘crocks’ at its bottom.Good quality loam-basedcompost such as John InnesNo.3 will work well, but helpto keep it well aerated andfree-draining by adding 25-50% multi-purpose loam-freecompost.
Whatever the size of yourgarden, but especially ifspace is short, when youare choosing fruit trees itis essential to get them onthe right ‘rootstock’, as thisdetermines the ultimatesize and vigour of the tree. The rootstock is the type ofroots onto which the chosenvariety of apple has beengrafted. Apples are particularlycomplicated and a goodnursery will advise you, but

as a rule, for step-overs,cordons, dwarf bushesand trees in containers trythe extremely dwarfing butsomewhat tricky M27 - but dobeware weak varieties or anytree grown on this rootstock inpoor soil or not well pamperedmay well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the easier to lookafter dwarfing rootstock M26,while for a cordon, an espalieron poor soil, arches and bushtrees try the semi-dwarfingMM106.
You can either buy one yearold ‘maidens’ or ‘whips’ whichare small, fairly straight stemsand train them yourself, orif you want to save time youcan often buy trained or part-trained fruit trees. Obviouslyyou’ll pay more for a trained
tree, but it can save youseveral years work!
Make sure you choose thevarieties you grow so that theyare in flower at the same timeand thus can pollinate eachother - if there is no suitablepollinator in the vicinity youwill not get fruit. Check withyour supplier who will be ableto tell you which ‘pollinationgroup’ each variety is in.
At this time of year you canbuy fruit trees which are reallygood value because theyare sold ‘bare root’, this justmeans lifted from a field andnot container grown. Theseare not only inexpensive, butalso establish particularlywell. Bare root fruit trees aregenerally available from aboutNovember until early March, depending on the weather - so
don’t delay, get ordering orplanting today!

Christmas is often ladenwith expectations, anxieties, overindulgence and familytensions. It’s no coincidencethat divorce lawyers are busiestin January. So how can you makeChristmas happier andhealthier?Take The Pressure Off• Buy presents throughout the
year, even on holiday; giftshops may stock somethingunique.
• Try to resolve family conflictsbeforehand.
• You can’t please all of thepeople all of the time, so askeveryone involved (includingyourself) what one or twothings really makes theirChristmas. Agree on a planthat includes these things, plus exercise and groupactivities. Allot tasks toensure one person doesn’t doeverything.
• Bake and freeze food inadvance where possible.
avOid fesTive fOOdPOisOningHygiene can slip with extrafood, extra cooks and extra timepressure, so:• Store and prepare ALL raw
food separately from ready-to-eat foods.
• Rub fruit and vegetablesclean – don’t just rinse them.
• Defrost foods thoroughlyand then cook or refrigerateimmediately. Large turkeystake time - always checkinside for ice crystals.
• Ensure your fridge stays
below 5°C and there’s roomfor cold air circulation.
• Keep food in the fridge untilthe last possible moment.
• Make sure nobody skimpson washing (and drying) theirhands. Germs love damp.
• Ensure that meat between thebreast and thigh of your turkeyisn’t pink, and that juices areclear.
• Adhere to ‘use by’ dates andcheck food carefully whenbeyond its ‘best before’ date.
• Don’t leave buffet food out formore than four hours.
• Chill leftovers rapidly andreheat them thoroughly (justonce).
healThier ChrisTmaseaTingStart with a healthy, fillingbreakfast to avoid snackingtemptations.dinner:• Avoid fat-laden starters and
the salt shaker.• Keep portion size sensible
and stop eating just as youstart to feel full.
• Poultry fat is predominantlyin the skin, so prick it thencook it on a rack, above theescaping fat.
• Use vegetarian sausage mixrather than sausage meat instuffing.
• Forget goose fat roasties. Usea healthy oil spray or cookjacket potatoes.
• Microwave, steam or boilvegetables in minimal wateruntil just soft. Add herbs orlemon juice rather than butter.
• Use low salt gravy mix and
remove fat from meat juicesbefore adding them.
• Keep Christmas puddingportions small and add low-fat custard, crème fraîcheor Greek yogurt rather thancream or brandy butter.
Christmas Party or Tea:• Swap traditional mince piesfor filo or open-top versions.
• Swap breaded or batteredsnacks for savouries madewith herbs, light dressings andmarinades.
• Choose tomato-based dips ormake creamy dips with yogurtor crème fraîche.
• Avoid crisps, salted nuts andchocolates; choose plainpopcorn, rice cakes, pretzels, unsalted nuts and fruit dippedin chocolate (preferably dark).
Be drink Wise• Even small amounts of
alcohol affect judgement andreactions. Absorption dependson many factors, so no setamount guarantees you’reunder the legal driving limit -and Scotland has a lower limitthan the rest of the UK.
• Don’t exceed NHSrecommended weekly limits:21 units for men and 14 unitsfor women.
• Alcohol and salty snackscontribute to dehydration, making people irritable.Provide jugs of chilled waterjazzed up with winter berriesor citrus peel.
Take time out to relax, andremember: a burnt turkey isn’tthe end of the world.

“There’s nothing i need.don’t buy me anything.”It’s the festive season, and notbuying anything just isn’t anoption, unless you want to feellike a cross between the Grinchand Ebenezer Scrooge onChristmas morning. But whatdo you get for those friends orfamily members who genuinelyseem to have everything?I’m not talking a mansion, ayacht and a Ferrari: just all thethings required for comfortable, everyday living. There comes a time ineveryone’s life when it’s likelythat they will have collected allthe knick-knacks, gadgets andgizmos they’ll ever need. Sowhat are the options when itcomes to buying an original giftfor the man or woman who says“There’s nothing I need”?
give a goatAt Oxfam (www.oxfam.org.uk) it costs just £25 to buy agoat for a needy family tryingto survive in areas affected bywar or drought, who can usethe gift to produce nutritiousdairy products such as milk andcheese. Oxfam also supplies abrightly coloured gift card thatexplains your purchase.
an unforgettable experienceIf you’ve run out of gift
ideas for your nearest anddearest, why not give theman experience? It could beanything from afternoon teafor two at a choice of 70 hotelsand restaurants nationwide(£36 from www.redletterdays.co.uk), to a hot air champagneballoon flight for one (from £109at www.buyagift.co.uk). Thisisn’t the kind of gift you cankeep in your bottom drawer, butthe lucky recipient is unlikelyto ever forget the sensationof drifting high over the Britishcountryside with a glass ofbubbly in their hand.
adopt a rare animalThe World Wildlife Fund (nowcalled WWF) has anotherclever gift idea for people wholike to feel they are helping agood cause. Go to www.wwf.org.uk and buy an “adopt awild animal” pack as a gift. This isn’t an actual adoption– your donation won’t be linkedto a specific animal – but theadoption pack does includea cuddly toy version of thechosen species.
go retroTreat them to a retro sweethamper (£36) or a retrochocolate gift box (£12.95) fullof Munchies, Curly Wurlies andother nostalgic goodies, both
from www.retrosweets.co.uk.Vintage board games are alsopopular: you can buy old gamesin “as new” condition fromonline retailers such as eBayand Amazon.
Buy a gift voucherIt used to be that gift voucherscould only be exchanged atone particular retailer, butthose days are long gone. The “Love2Shop” voucher canbe spent in over 20,000 UKlocations, including restaurants, hotels, spas and leisure resort(www.highstreetvouchers.com).
Can’t afford any of theabove? If your Christmas gift budgetwon’t stretch to the itemsmentioned here, considergiving the gift of your time. Buya small gift box and enclose anote promising to do somethingfor the recipient: a couple ofhours of gardening; baking acake every week for a month;decorating the spare room. These gifts are a far cry from aboring box of toiletries or a shirtand tie set, and at least you’llwin Brownie points for originalthinking. You’ll also avoid thedirty looks and long silencesthat come from having takenthe “Nothing I need” brigade’sprotestations a bit too literally!

There will be many readerswho will be truly sorryto know that after nearly22 years as Postmistressof Woolhampton PostOffice, Sandra Low is toretire and the Post Officewill cease to trade.
Sandra has been very popularwith customers from all parts ofthe area - not just Woolhampton. Her patience and friendlyattitude - together with herefficiency - has ensured that we,her customers, have not only
been confident of her serviceand advice on our businesstransactions, - but invariablyhad our day brightened by her.
Sandra’s words are quotedbelow - but I would like toadd that although the PostOffice will be badly missed- more importantly, Sandra’spersonality and friendshipwill leave a significant gap inour Community. Based onthis, it will be difficult to findanother Post Office which suitsmany of our requirements!
We wish her, and her husbandKeith, the best of health andhappiness in the future.
“Retirement means I can spendmore time with my family anddo things that werelimited by my workinghours, but I wishto thank all mycustomers, manyof whom are nowmy friends, for theircustom and I hopethat you will soonfind another PostOffice to suit yourrequirements!”

“Owing to a Government decision, School term dates will no longer be set by LocalAuthorities. Instead, each school will set their own term dates. This means that WestBerkshire Council will no longer be able to publish the term dates for the whole ofour district, nor will we be able to answer any queries about them. You will needto contact schools directly if you need information or have questions. This decisionwas originally scheduled to come into force in September 2015, but the Secretaryof State is expected to advise the exact time that this new system will start..”
