Techung in Toronto

Folk singer Techung gave an amazing performance to a lively crowd at the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre on July 28. The concert was one of many stops on the East Coast tour titled “For Peace in Tibet”. According to Techung’s website, the purpose of the tour is to promote Tibetan music. Audience members were serenaded with traditional Tibetan songs as well as Techung’s own compositions- a

unique fusion of traditional and world music.

Techung was also joined by local Tibetan talent. Sonam Chokey (pictured right) accompanied Techung for a few pieces.

“Tibetan music has reached deep down into our souls for centuries and I fear that it may become lost altogether if it isn't accessible and readily available in the community and the global market. For this reason, I wanted to focus on the basic fundamentals, the true essence of Tibetan music and bring it to the forefront for the world to hear.” Techung

The proceeds of the concert were donated to TCCC

BIO Techung grew up in Dharamshala, India, where his family and thousands of other Tibetans resettled from Tibet. At the age of 9 he enrolled in the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA). He was there for 17 years studying all aspects of Tibetan performing arts. He toured with TIPA in its first international tour as a leading child actor in 1975-76 and for many years afterwards. After emigrating to the U.S, he co-founded the San Francisco-based Chaksampa Tibetan Dance and Opera Company in 1989. From 1995-97 Techung worked for the Milarepa Fund in San Francisco who organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts worldwide. In addition to being one of most well known traditional Tibetan musical traditions, Techung is also respected for his original solo and collaborative music, which draws on both his own heritage and other world music traditions. Techung's voice and music have been featured on the soundtracks of the IMAX film Everest, the feature films Windhorse, and Dreaming Lhasa. His music is prominently featured on documentary films Blind Sight, Dalai Lama Renaissance, and Fire Under the Snow. His music has also been used in a dvd titled Living Wisdom with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. For more information and to buy Techung’s CDs please visit www.techung.com

Tibetan Resettlement Project

Canada is facilitating the immigration of up to 1,000 Tibetans from Arunachal Pradesh. As refugees, Tibetans in this region have little in the way of opportunity, education or jobs. Up to 1,000 displaced Tibetans, including principal applicants and their eligible family members, are to be accepted under this public policy. Principal applicants and their eligible family members, whether they accompany the principal applicant or not, will be counted towards this total.

The Canada Tibet Committee has incorporated Project Tibet Society (PTS) to act as the umbrella organization that will support implementation of this project. PTS is working closely with community organizations and individuals to ensure the success of this project. In Toronto, the 24 member Tibetan Arunachal Resettlement Project Support (TARPS group), formed in June 2012, is working hard to raise funds in support of PTS and get community members to sign up to be sponsors in groups of five.

A Group of Five is any group of five or more – Canadians who live in the community where the Tibetan family will

settle. Members will ensure that the necessary support will be provided for the 12 months of the sponsorship. The group will need to show that they have the resources, expertise and commitment to fulfill the sponsorship.

With the Refugee Sponsorship Training Program (a Toronto-based organization), Project Tibet Society will ensure that the required training is provided to support this exciting initiative. In addition to this training, Project Tibet Society will help guide Groups of Five through all the necessary steps required and be their to counsel groups during the 12 month period.
