ISSUES AND CHALLENGES
Capacity and Utilization
• The trend for the Toronto Catholic District School Board has been declining numbers in student enrolment
• The decline results in an increase of surplus space in schools that have more capacity than is required for the number of students enrolled
• In 2000/2001, 14 of our elementary schools were below 60% with none being below 60% in our secondary schools
• In 2005/2006, 156 of our elementary schools were above 60% capacity and 15 were at or below 60% capacity
• In 2005/2006, 30 of our secondary schools were above 60% capacity and 2 were at or below 60% capacity

• Major factors contributing to this decline are:
– Decline in the preschool aged population
– Long term trend of women waiting longer to have children
– Decline in the Birth Rate (# of births/1,000 people in the population)
– Decline in Fertility Rate (Estimates the average number of children women aged 15 – 49 will have in their lifetime)
– Change in the immigration patterns (immigration from traditionally non-Catholic countries)
