CALLOVERTHE ONLY MAGAZINE
FOR THOSE ON THE KNOWLEDGE
Welcome to the fi rst issue of Call Over…I started the knowledge when I was 19 and got my badge when I was 23, following in my brothers footsteps as he completed the knowledge at the same age. CallOver is the brainchild of someone who watched his brother follow their uncle’s footsteps and observed fi rst hand his own generation, including his brother and close friends successfully undertake the daunting but ultimately rewarding task of completing the knowledge. Having followed their journey to become proud owners of The Green Badge he then managed to persuade some of them into supporting this new magazine project. CallOver is the only magazine purpose designed for knowledge students. Whether you are just starting or about to pass out, the carefully selected articles and information will help you navigate the maze of study. The magazine is free and aims to offer support and encouragement where sometimes there appears to be none. Our diary of a knowledge boy features a behind the scenes view of how students are progressing at each stage. Why not send us (anonymously of course) a diffi cult run you were asked or perhaps one you nailed bang on. Maybe you need help calling over the hotspots. If so test yourself with our “Where it’s at” pages. We know that learning the knowledge can be a testing, fi nancially draining and an emotional experience, so we’ll try our best to make CallOver as supportive and interesting as it is informative. We want CallOver to be the “best friend” of that special group of individuals who go largely unacknowledged until they achieve the ‘holy grail’ - otherwise known as The Green Badge. Please tell us what you think. The magazine will be supported by a fully interactive website, currently under development and a superb range of exclusive benefi ts and services from CallOver Club, please see pages 26-29. Club membership is FREE for all subscribers. We extend our sincere thanks to all the sponsors and supporters working with us on CallOver - the new, vibrant and much needed magazine for those on the knowledge. I will do my best to provide you with everything I know but if there is someone out there that has helpful information, please get in touch. We are all in this together.
Be safe.

The Knowledge is the world renowned test that all drivers need to pass in order to become a London Hackney Carriage (taxi/cab) Driver licenced to pick up passengers all over London. Drivers must acquire an in-depth “knowledge” of a 6 mile radius around Charing Cross which includes 320 routes (runs) covering 25,000 streets as well as places of interest and important landmarks.
To work as a licensed taxi driver you must be over 21. No official qualifications are required other than a valid UK driving licence. You will also be required to undertake a medical examination and be CRB checked.
On completing an application form to begin learning the Knowledge (this can be done at www.tfl.gov.uk or the Public Carriage Office at Palestra House, 197 Blackfriars Rd, London SE1 8NJ) you will receive a copy of the Guide to Learning the Knowledge of London (also known as the blue book) which lists 400 routes you must learn; the DVD “Go Your Own Way” and an advice booklet about learning the knowledge and how you will be assessed. This will help prepare you for your first examination, the Map Test.
When you attend your first examination you must pay a one-off fee of £100. After completing the Map Test drivers take a basic written examination followed by one-to-one “appearances” (interviews) in which they must talk through the shortest route between two areas of London. (Appearances will cost an additional one off fee of £250) Drivers will be called up for “appearances“ at:
56 Days28 Days21 Days
The total number of marks scored decides an overall grade for each appearance. Five grades can be awarded. The grades are then translated into points, which, when accumulated at each stage enable you to progress to the next.
40 Grade AA – 12 points, Exceptional36-39 Grade A – 6 points, Very Good32-35 Grade B – 4 points, Good24-31 Grade C – 3 points, Satisfactory24-0 Grade D – 0 points, Unsatisfactory
After completing the appearances you will be tested on your knowledge of the suburbs and at this stage also required to take a driving test in a taxi. You will be told in advance by an examiner when to book your driving test which is normally when you are on “21’s”.
Almost everyone who takes the knowledge of London uses a scooter when learning the runs. Check out the classified section to find your bike and get started (see page 31).
Happy scootering and be careful out there.

I am looking to complete my mid town runs and call fl uently.
I was really nervous as I was due for my drop to 28’s. Shame I got
a D but I missed out a few roads and call them fl uently. I Think that
Mary Hansworth Park was a trick question but shows we need to
point things properly as the park is where the Imperial War Museum
is. Nevermind, head down for the next one. Need to score or I will be
on my last chance.

Was glad I scored a C I did miss out a few roads but didn’t drop any points. I called the fi rst run
well and that eased my nerves a bit. Was so glad I checked my turn around’s the night before
because I always mix the roads up on leaving Lambeth County Court.
On the third run once I called it I knew it was Battersea Bridge but called it well.
This was my last chance to get my drop to 21s so I knew I had to put the extra work in and it
paid off.Target - Make sure I still call the sheets every night and start getting up to date with my turna-
rounds. Going to book my driving test and try and get that out the way.

This was my 2nd 21 and I scored a c. So that put me
on 1 score 1 d. I think he wanted me to turn it round in
Kensington court on the Maggie Jones run but I didn’t
do any illegal turns and got him there without
going too far out the way.

After ThoughtsSuburbs are very different from your normal runs. It is a marathon of a task learning it all. I did actually fi nd the examiners less daunting as I had done so
many exams by the time this came around, but the learning part still really put me to the test. I found the examiners less harsh on this exam, probably
because I am pretty much there now.The fi rst one I was asked was a bit of a shock as
this is not in the books or sheets, I just took a deep breath and called it, I knew where it was but I was slightly nervous I guess. I didn’t feel too bad about the other runs I was asked, my last one took me
from City Airport right out to near where I lived, not sure if they do this to all of us but my mate said he
had to run his back to near where he lived too.I found the key thing to remember was that you have to say the exact run that is in the book, not your own route, so whatever is printed must be
called on your appearance. To learn them, the best thing for me to do was to drive them, but I did also
learn them on maps and read books. (Parrot fashion)The week before the exam, I was calling every run
twice a day to make sure it stuck in my head. I didn’t want to mess this up so every spare second was
spent revising, I fi gured the hard work will be worth it in the end. The feeling of relief to have gotten to
this stage was so immense; I just couldn’t wait to get it over and done with.

Well I have fi nally made it... that was my fi rst thought after completing the knowledge, I have now had my badge for over a year and feel like I am learning more and more about the tricks of the trade, rather than just roads and points.
When I fi rst got out on the road I was always thinking about what way to go and if I was on the right route, now all I worry about is where to go to fi nd my next job. For instance if I drop off at somewhere near Edgware Road I know I would then go and get on the rank at Paddington Station, all these habits I am starting to pick up now.
It’s still early days but I am eager to get up every morning and go to work day or night, the older cab drivers keep telling me that will soon wear off, but it hasn’t yet. I am not sure, to this very day, if I prefer doing days or nights; all I know is that this job gives me the freedom to make that choice, which you don’t get from many others jobs.
Everyone knows that week-ends are the best time to work but I really struggle to get motivated so I only do weekends if I have to. All cab drivers work in different ways. I like to mix my week up a bit by doing a few days and then a few nights. You soon work out what suits you best. I usually work on a Friday night but on the odd occasion I go out instead, not very often though. Why spend when you can earn? If your wheels ain’t turning you ain’t earning. That’s my motto.
The most important thing for me about the job is that I can work when I want, I can go in and do the hours I like, with no boss to answer to. (Unless the missus pulls the reigns in, then I’m out all day and night!) There are lots of pros and cons of every job I have done in the past. Window cleaning, glazing, building; it’s only when I think of them, that I realise how I really enjoy being a cabby. What I mean is you won’t be lying in bed worrying about work or if you will still have a job next week. The only thing I miss from the building trade is every now and then you can fi nish early, or have a laugh with your mates.
I’ve found that you have to put the hours in when being a cabbie, and some say this can be lonely, I think it’s down to you to be interactive with your customers, the stories you hear from them sometimes, it certainly puts a smile on my face....
“If your wheels ain’t turning you ain’t earning”
In my fi rst year I made a few funny mistakes. One that sticks in my mind is the time I pulled up at the rank at Charing Cross. I heard a driver beeping his horn. As I looked to my right there were about fi ve cabs ranking up so I just pulled off saying “sorry mate, I didn’t see you there”. I felt so stupid but hey that’s the joys of being a butter boy.
Now I have been told you get lucky days in this trade and I certainly got one of those no so long ago. I got in about 6.30am and had a few jobs on the spin. I was then heading down Westbourne Grove when a guy (who looked a little worse for wear) said he wanted to go to Sunningdale, I replied “down the A3?” He said “yes I’ve been out all night and just need to get home”. So off we went in rush hour. It took about an hour and a half to get there but he was happy to get home. I then headed back into town. When I got
to the A4, Great West Road, a guy fl agged me down and asked to go to Bishopsgate. I just looked at him in amazement. He asked if I knew where it was, “of course” I said, “it will take a while”. He said that was no problem. Once I had dropped him off I knew my day couldn’t get much better than the last 3 hours so I headed on home.

Acquiring ‘the Knowledge’ of the complex layout of central London’s 25,000 streets as well as thousands of places of interest causes structural changes in the brain according to new research funded by the Wellcome Trust. The study, recently published in the journal ‘Current Biology’, supports increasing evidence that even in adult life, learning can change the structure of the brain, offering encouragement for lifelong learning.
Previous studies of qualifi ed London taxi drivers led by Professor Eleanor Maguire from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL (University College London) have shown a greater volume of grey matter - the nerve cells in the brain where processing takes place - in an area known as the posterior hippocampus and less in the anterior hippocampus.
Studies also showed that although taxi drivers displayed better memory for London-based information, they showed poorer learning and memory on other tasks involving visual information, suggesting there might be a price to pay for acquiring the Knowledge. The research suggested that structural brain differences may have been acquired through the experience of navigating and to accommodate the internal representation of London.
To test whether this was the case, Professor Maguire and her colleague Dr Katherine Woollett followed a group of 79 knowledge students and 31 others, taking snapshots of their brain structure over time using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study performance of certain memory tasks. 39 of the student group qualifi ed as taxi drivers, enabling researchers to divide the volunteers into three groups for comparison i.e those that passed; those that trained but did not pass; and others who never trained.
Researchers examined the structure of the volunteers’ brains at the start of the study and found no discernible differences in the structures of either the posterior hippocampus or the anterior hippocampus. All groups performed equally well on the memory tasks.
Three to four years later - when the students had either passed or failed to qualify, the researchers again looked at the brain structures of all volunteers and tested their performance on memory tasks. This time, they found signifi cant differences in the
posterior hippocampus and those who had qualifi ed as taxi drivers had a greater volume of grey matter in this region than before they started learning the knowledge. This change was not apparent in those who failed to qualify or the other volunteers.
On the memory tasks both qualifi ed and non-qualifi ed knowledge students were signifi cantly better at memory tasks involving London landmarks than the others. However, the qualifi ed students - but not those who failed to qualify - were worse at other tasks such as recalling complex visual information.
Professor Maguire, told CallOver “The human brain remains ‘plastic’, even in adult life, allowing it to adapt when we learn new tasks. By following knowledge students during this uniquely challenging spatial memory task we have seen directly how structure of the hippocampus can change with external stimulation. This offers encouragement for adults who want to learn new skills later in life.”
Dr John Williams, Head of Neuroscience and Mental Health at the Wellcome Trust, says: “ Only a few studies have shown direct evidence for plasticity in the adult human brain related to vital functions such as memory, so this new follow up work by Eleanor makes an important contribution to this fi eld of research.”
So, it’s offi cial – learning the knowledge expands your brain!

Improved application process for CRB checks: All individuals applying to become a licensed taxi driver have to undergo an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check upon application. The driving history of every applicant is also checked. All applicants have to prove their medical fitness and meet the DVLA Group 2 medical requirements. Only when all these conditions have been satisfied will the license be issued. Licensed drivers must then undergo an enhanced CRB check every three years in order to renew their licence. A new, more efficient, procedure is being introduced for CRB application forms to reduce the processing time for licensing applications.
Helen Chapman, Deputy Director of Taxi and Private Hire at tfl said: “I am very pleased to announce a new process for carrying out CRB checks for applicants and I hope applicants will quickly reap the rewards of a quicker, more efficient application process.” The benefits include:
· Applications processed more quickly· Drivers able to complete the CRB application online· Dedicated and expert admin team at tfl to handle queries
The administration fee for applications will be £13.00 for paper applications or £11 for an online application, inclusive of VAT.
Motorcycles to be allowed permanent access to bus lanes
Following two extensive trials, motorcycles will be able to drive in bus lanes on a permanent basis on the majority of Red Routes from 23 January, 2012.
The analysis from two 18 month trials has shown that allowing motorcyclists to use bus lanes is very popular with an estimated 50,000 journeys a day now being made by motorcyclists in Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) bus lanes. This has helped contribute to achieving key Mayoral priorities to smooth traffic, cut CO2 across London and improve journey time reliability for motorcyclists.
Ben Plowden, TfL’s Director of Better Routes and Places, said: ‘The results of our latest trial show that the Mayor’s policy of providing access to bus lanes along some of the busiest roads in London has delivered strong benefits for motorcyclists and improvements in the efficiency of the road network. The two tri-als have shown reduced journey times and environmental benefits with no significant adverse safety issues for motorcyclists or other vulnerable road users.’

So there I was on a normal days work, when I pulled
up outside The Ivy Restaurant I started chatting to the Porter who said this couple need
to go Trafalgar Square I said yeah jump in, I started to put my meter on heard the cab door shut and off I set, we got to Trafalgar Square and I thought this couple are quite so I looked in my mirror and couldn’t see anyone,
I stopped my cab got out had a look in the back and saw it was empty I thought what is this all about so I turned
around and headed straight back to the restaurant where the porter was there, I said what happened he
said I opened the door the couple then said can I have a photo so I shut the door and you
speed off, I couldn’t believe it!!! VIC
I was driving down Spitalfi elds, when I got hailed by a
gentleman in a suit, he said driver can you take me to Soho Greek Street so
off we set, he didn’t seem that talkative so I turned up the radio and started to listen to the usual debates on radio, when I pulled over he
jumped out but not in his suit I had picked him up in, he was in his high heels and
dress, I didn’t even realise he was getting changed in the back! JIM
Typical butter boy! One of our young drivers came
to rent a taxi he went to fi ll up with Diesel that evening, and when he went
to drive his taxi off it wouldn’t start, so he called RAC who came out to check over the cab, who then explained to the driver to drive automatic cabs you must
have it in park. GEOFF
You should learn this on your driving lessons! A Driver kept
complaining about the bleeping noise that was coming from the rear of the cab,
when he brought it back we realised that the disable belt had been not secure and it
was the warning noise bleeping. PETE
A very well experienced driver, decided to pay his
rent but deducted his diesel costs as he thought that was
included in the cost of rental. MARK

1. False It is said that the Household Cavalry touch this nose every time they pass through the arch, as a mark of respect to the Iron Duke. In fact, it’s one of several prosthetic noses placed around London by artist Rick Buckley and only dates back a decade or so.
2. True3. True4. False Actually, it means the opposite. The
Royal Standard is the fl ag that confi rms the Queen is home. The Union Flag above the Palace means she’s elsewhere.
5. True6. False It’s true that the Strand entrance
to the Savoy has reversed driving directions. However it is not the only place in the UK. Hammersmith bus station’s entrance and exit both force drivers to the right.
7. True8. True It’s not. It’s called the Clock
Tower. But everyone calls it Big Ben. St Stephen’s is the shorter, spired tower above Central Lobby.
9. False There is a lamp at the lower end of Carting Lane. However, it is not quite correct to say that it’s powered by sewer gas. The Webb Patent Sewer Gas Lamp, of which this is the only example left in London, was chiefl y fuelled by the mains supply of gas. However, a fl ue from the sewers did draw up waste gases for combustion along with the mains gas.
10. False This urban myth is only hours old, but looks set to gain currency. The fi gure is based on a blog post from three years ago. This was followed up with a new post explaining how the original number is certainly not defi nitive.
