Guatemala – a land so rich in beauty, yet overwhelmed by poverty. This is the land in which I recently spent 10 days on a mission trip. Our 17-member team, in conjunction with the missionary couple at each of two locations, spent time doing construction projects, handing out toys and hygiene packets, and building relationships with the people at each location.

At our first stoAt our first stop, we built walls for the little shack homes in which the Mayan people (14 families) lived, high in the rugged mountains. We also took the people blankets, clothes, toys, and tools. Over and over again, the missionaries told us that the most meaningful thing we did was put hands and feet to the concept of the love of Christ. Yes, they appreciated the construction and the giftconstruction and the gifts, but most of all the people needed to know that we actually cared about them as people, rather than just coming in to bring gifts/do projects. What a spiritual lesson! Even those who live in desperate poverty know deep within that it’s not about things; it’s about people – their hearts, their lives.

At our second stop, we built a playground for an orphanage, built a rock walkway over part of the property, played games with the cchildren, and took toys, clothes, school supplies, sheets, snacks, and lots of love to share with these darling children. They are so in need of someone to remind them of God’s love for them and the fact that they are special to Him and to others. Again, the message from the missionary couple was the same: it’s not about “stuff”, it’s about relationships.

All in allAll in all, it was a pure joy and delight to go back to a country I have come to love, and in which I have the privilege of sharing the love of Jesus – thanks to many of you! May the Lord’s work continue in countless ways.
