Reminders To Our Parents For the protection of our students, staff and faculty, please do not use your cell phone while driving on campus. Drop-off and pick-up times need your full attention. Also, from the Student Policy and Procedure Manual - Page 29 H-1 Illness: To safeguard the health of the TCS community, it is requested that students do not attend school if they have a fever. The medical community suggests that individuals be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to the community. If your child has a fever at school, you will be called to pick them up.

First let me gush about your incredibly fabulous accomplishment for the North Fulton Community Charities Food Drive. I know we announced the total cans last week but it deserves restating….two

thousand two hundred and fifty items! 2,250…that’s HUGE. From a school population of

less than 170 families, that is huge! The food drive was the first initiative of our Interact Club for this school year. Since Interact is sponsored by Rotary International, I made the announcement last week at our Roswell Rotary Board. You should have seen the response! We sent pictures to our local papers, our website and the Rotary District Newsletter! Since we had just received a notice from NFCC that their shelves were bare, you can imagine their enthusiastic and grateful response when we delivered the truck full of goodies. Thank you, each and every one of you, for your contributions. Last week’s 911 Memorial Ceremony at the Roswell Faces of War site was, as always, inspirational and educational. This year we were able to take a bus load of high school students to the ceremony but middle school had a scheduling conflict. We have a year to work that one out. I feel strongly that we should expose our students to opportunities to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Our student body comes from a wide geographical range and I encourage you to locate memorials and historic sites close to you that you can share with them. The eight students who attended were respectful and curious. I was so proud to have them there and so grateful to the City Council representatives, Mayor Wood and Senator John Albers, who made it a point to personally welcome them. This year’s senior class was in kindergarten when the towers collapsed, the pentagon was struck and the plane went down. The American experience changed on that day and the children of that era have been, in some very important ways, defined by that moment in history. Because that horrific event spanned a multitude of nationalities, religions, generations and socio-economic groups, it touches us all. We have a responsibility to inform and remember with gratitude the sacrifices made that day by those who died and those who survived and continue to struggle. We strive to fill each day with progress, knowledge and fun! We are approaching the busy month of October which the City of Roswell has identified as a month to focus on art. You will see our students’ art work displayed in local businesses and we plan to contribute to the city event that brings the celebrated art community to the fore front. In addition, our Middle School is creating a float that will be featured in this year’s Youth Day Parade on Saturday, October 12th. If you have not been a witness to this remarkable celebration of the youth in our community, this is the year. Of course, we have a long standing tradition of winning the Best Float in our category, so we are the defending champion! I may not be able to continue writing Jacque’s Note for the next few weeks. Joe and I are taking a trip we have been planning for years and will be out of the country until mid-October. We will stay in touch with the school, as we have over the years when we travel, but I doubt I will be attending to Wednesday Packet deadlines. Enjoy these busy weeks…It is ALL GOOD!

Attention Parents Utilizing SB10

Vouchers!

As a part of the implementation requirements for the Senate Bill 10 vouchers, the state requires

private schools to administer a pre and post test to those students that receive Senate Bill 10

funding. In order to fulfill this requirement, The Cottage School will administer the Stanford 10

Achievement test as the pre test.

The Stanford 10 includes nine multiple choice sub tests: however, for the purposes of fulfilling

the pre-test requirements, students will be administered only the Mathematics and English sub

tests. TCS students who qualify will receive accommodations such as extra time or oral

administration.

High School and Middle School Schedule:

September 23, 2013: 8:15 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. (Students will remain in testing until sections

are complete.)

Make-Up Day

September 24, 2013: 8:15 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

Fall Test dates: (*for SB 10 students only)

All TCS students will be administered the Stanford 10 Spring Semester.

The BEST way to avoid getting the flu is to get a flu shot every year.

CDC recommends that influenza vaccination begin as soon as vaccine becomes available in the community and continue throughout the flu season. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza, and influenza seasons can begin as early as October.

Remember, you can’t catch the flu from a flu shot!

Event: Showing of director James Redford’s acclaimed 2012 HBO film, The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia. Discussion with Dr. Alfonso

Martinez following the film. Dr. Alfonso Martinez is a board-certified neuropsychologist and the director of The Neuropsychology Center in

Peachtree City. Dr. Martinez specializes in the evaluation and diagnosis of dyslexia (i.e., a reading disorder), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

(ADHD), and other conditions that affect academic performance. His philosophy is that the first step in helping a struggling child is to provide

The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia provides personal and uplifting accounts of the dyslexic experience from children, experts and iconic

leaders, such as Sir Richard Branson and financier Charles Schwab. Directed by James Redford, the film not only clears up the misconceptions

about the condition, but also paints a picture of hope for all who struggle with it. Shining a spotlight on the latest scientific and psychological

research, the film also highlights the work of Drs. Sally and Bennett Shaywitz, co-founders and co-directors of the Yale Center of Dyslexia and

Creativity to illuminate the hidden origins and implications of dyslexia. Proving that dyslexia is a neurological issue and not a character flaw, The

Big Picture beautifully illustrates that while the condition is an obstacle, it

also carries some unique advantages, and ultimately can be overcome.

About the Program:

Children don't want adults to be involved in their social lives. They hate it when teachers

"interfere." Yet teachers are witnesses to the exclusion of low-status children in elementary

schools and the popularity wars of middle school and they must act to protect the weak. Parents

also see the friendship difficulties of their own children. Some take their children's social

ambitions to heart and worry that their children are not popular. Other parents hope the school

can protect their children from all social pain.

Social cruelty among kids is one of the most difficult things that adults have to confront in

raising or educating children. Experienced teachers can be confused about how to protect a child

in class, for fear of putting a rejected or controversial child in "the limelight." They can also feel

defensive when parents of neglected or victimized children come to the school for help.

This presentation walks teachers and parents through the complex social world of childhood and

addresses a number of questions: What do social relationships in school predict about happiness

in adult life? What is the normal sequence of child friendships, from the parallel play of the two-

year-old to the intimate self-disclosure of the adolescent? Why do cliques form and what are the

differences between boy and girl groups? Why are children scapegoated and how can their

parents and school protect them? Dr. Thompson will draw on research to highlight the

differences between friendship and popularity. He makes suggestions about the management of

social problems in schools and makes the case that while all children yearn for popularity, it is

friendship that helps children survive and thrive.

About Dr. Thompson:

Michael Thompson, Ph.D. is a consultant, author and psychologist specializing in children and

families. He is the supervising psychologist for the Belmont Hill School and has worked in more

than five hundred schools across the United States, as well as in international schools in Central

America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
