Craig: What was your sports backgroundbefore triathlon?

Rachel: I was heavily involved in equestri-an sports from the age of 9 through grad-uate school. Sounds completely unrelatedto triathlon, I know, but I have stumbledupon other pros that also ride/rode horses(Michellie Jones and Sam McGlone, any-one?) so I guess it’s not that uncommon. There are some transferable skills, forinstance, overcoming your fears and hav-ing confidence on a large, potentially dan-gerous animal (not unlike riding a bike). Also, horses require getting really dirty, not unlike being covered in sweat, dirt, muddy water, and God knows what else bythe end of a triathlon. Ironically, I used togo running with my horse on dirt trails bythe barn before I rode. This always gener-ated several strange stares from other hik-ers but I would just joke that I didn’t havea dog to run with. It was a great workoutfor me (riding competitively actuallyrequires some fitness) and a good warm-upfor the horse. I actually competed in a“tetrathlon” for Pony Club when I was lit-tle; we had to shoot (air pistol), swim, run, and jump over a course of fences onthe horse. I could ride well and run okaybut the swim was a joke. Everyone else musthave been on a swim team or something. Icame in dead last. My arms were like spaghet-ti noodles flopping out of the water. My dadcaught the whole thing on tape.

Craig: How did you get started with triathlon?

Rachel: When my third horse retired in 2004,I was in graduate school and couldn’t affordthe time and money required to support a newhorse (believe it or not, there are things outthere more expensive and time-consumingthan triathlon). I began running but wasplagued with injuries. I was already crosstraining by swimming and doing weights when

my physical therapist pointed out that if I hada bike, I could do a triathlon. I bought myfirst road bike and signed up for my first sprinttriathlon, the St. Peters Rec Plex Triathlon, just north of St. Louis. I was terrified becausethe bike was 20 miles and that seemed like areally long way at the time. I trained formonths. When I crossed the finish line, I hadtwo thoughts: Where is the food? I’ve neverbeen so hungry! And, why did I wait so long todo this?

Craig: What was your Ironman Arizona experi-ence like?

IRONMAN CONVERSATION WITH CRAIG ZELENT

I had the pleasure recently of talking triathlon with TCSD memberRachel Richards. Rachel completed her first Ironman this April inArizona with a time of 14:40:47. Please join me as we get to knowa very special lady.

MEMBER PROFILE,continued

Best event: Swim, Bike or Run:The bike portion is my bestevent. My PR is a 5:07 at IMCanada. Usual strategy: Gettingthrough the swim - catch up onthe bike - and hang on for dearlife on the run.

PR: race time or any split time(include race name and distance): I had a pretty goodday at IM Canada ’02 with a10:08 finish. At the EverestChallenge ’06 I had a combinedtime of 12:58 (which I thoughtwas a decent time for an “oldguy”).

Most Embarrassing or DisastrousMoment: At the ’04 IMCDA Icouldn’t keep anything down allday. I think I rode the wholebike portion with “remnants"on half of my face. Anyways, I finished in 11:23 and pro-ceeded to spend a couple ofhours in the medical tent andwas treated by the wonderfulstaff to a “3 bagger” (thatwould be 3 bags of IV fluid...)

Equipment wish list: -

Wetsuit brand: Desoto T1

Bike brand: Cervelo P3. Since ‘99Great bikes.

Shoe brand: Specialized

Can’t Race Without: At the bikeportion of an IM race in myspecial needs bag I absolutelyhave to have my can of flat-tened coke and two small cansof Pringles. I freeze the coke ina small plastic flask beforeturning it in and I’ll also addextra salt to the Pringles andput the lids back on.

Best advice: Perspective, perspective, perspective. Have a good time out there...

Ironman Conversation, continued

Rachel: It is difficult to capture how muchthis race meant for me in words. Even thoughI did absolutely everything I could possibly doto train for this race (and I mean everything),I was still completely petrified when I lined upin the lake on race morning. I had done all thetraining, and all of a sudden, in the lake, itjust hit me: What am I doing? This is absolute-

ly insane! Then, the cannon went off, and mymind was instantly cleared of thought, and agreat sense of calm and peace swept over me.I just started swimming.

It was a really tough day; the weather con-ditions were the most extreme they had everbeen for that race: 97-degree temps and 30mph headwinds. It felt like the 5th ring ofDante’s Inferno on Beeline Highway that day.I saw very, very fit athletes dropping like fliesall around me. Later, I learned that the DNFrate was the third highest in Ironman history.Of course, looking back, I wouldn’t change athing. It just made crossing the finish linethat much more special. I learned a lot abouthow to endure pain and overcome negativitythat day. I just wanted to cross that finishline; that was it. I focused on that one goal allday long. I forced down calories, salt pills, and

tons of water religiously. Relinquishing allpride and ego, I slowed my pace down to acrawl to allow my poor heart rate to slow andjust kept thinking about the marathon I stillhad to run. The aid stations were serving hotwater. Then, they started to run out of water. At one aid station, I had to stop, get off thebike, and dig through tossed water bottles to

find enough to drink. I knew if I didn’t, I was-n’t going to make it to the next aid station. Itwas no longer a race; it had become a matterof survival.

I reached the end of the bike and was justso happy to be done with the bike that I wasactually relieved to start the marathon. Iheaded out of T2 and felt great. I guess allfueling and hydrating worked. I noticed I wasone of the few with a smile still on my face. The afternoon shadows grew long, and the sunbegan to go down, and as the temps cooledoff, I felt better and better. My legs and feetwere deliciously numb, and I felt like I wasfloating over the ground. It was like having arunner’s high for 26.2 miles. Around mile 19, Ilooked up at the night sky and was over-whelmed by the millions of twinkling starsagainst the hazy backdrop of the Milky Way. Icontinued page 11

was completely unprepared for something sobrilliantly beautiful that late into an Ironman.I had never run a marathon before and hadbeen warned about hitting the wall at mile 20.Maybe it was the delicious chicken broth, orthe magical elixir that they call Coca Cola butI never hit the wall. Instead, I had a resur-gence of energy at mile 20 and began pickingup speed.

The final mile of the Ironman was bitter-sweet; I was shaking in anticipation of cross-ing the finish line but also overcome with adeep sadness that my first Ironman was com-ing to an end. I turned to go down the chuteand actually started sprinting; I was so excit-ed. Crossing the finish line was a blur of crack-ling loudspeakers, bright lights, and cheersbut I will always remember the intensemixture of emotions that surged throughme as I crossed: the exquisite, overwhelm-ing feelings of accomplishment, victory, euphoria, and relief. Seconds later, Ilooked around: Now what?

Craig: I know you were really looking for-ward to you IM. Once it was over, did youexperience any post race hangover?

Rachel: Most definitely. I had focused onthat one goal for so long that all of a sud-den, afterwards, it hit me: Oh, I have todeal with my life now. Plus, my body wastired so it was really easy to be overcomewith post-Ironman blues during my recov-ery month since I wasn’t allowing myselfto work out as much. I kept having thisrecurring dream that I was still out thererunning the 3rd lap by Tempe Towne Lake;that I was still doing the Ironman. I wasovercome with great sadness upon awak-ening to realize that I wasn’t. My Ironmanwas over. It was as if I had left a part ofmyself out there on the course in Tempe.

Once I started working out again andseeing all my tri-buddies, I started feelingbetter. I had heard the best way to recoverfrom a big race like that is to have anotherrace in the future to look forward to but it washard. I just couldn’t get pumped for SpringSprint and San Diego International afterIronman Arizona. However, I showed up at thestart completely relaxed with a “Let’s have

fun,” attitude, something I’ve never been ableto do before. I don’t get nearly as nervousbefore sprints and Olympics now. I had a majorPR at Spring Sprint, which injected me withrenewed confidence and motivation. It was agreat race to dust off the cobwebs and get meout of my funk.

Craig: What is your favorite part of being amember of TCSD?

Rachel: In a nutshell—the Aquathlons. Theyrepresent all my favorite things about TCSD. Iget to see all my friends, get in a tough, com-petitive speed workout and eat a ton of goodfood afterwards while watching the sunset inone of the most coveted spots in the U.S. (theShores). The Aquathlons always remind me ofhow lucky I am to be doing what I love along-

and organize. I was really impressed that youtook that on as a fairly new member of theclub. What do you suggest for other new mem-bers to get involved?

Rachel: I was really tired of riding by myself, but the Saturday rides up the coast hadbecome monotonous. In addition, since I wastraining for a half-ironman, I wanted to ride abit longer but it seemed like everyone who wasriding long was really fast and way more expe-rienced than me so I kept getting dropped. Ireasoned I might not be the only one with thisproblem and sent out an email to the club tosee if others were interested. The response Igot back was overwhelming. I started organiz-ing the alternative Saturday bike rides, and it’sbeen such a rewarding experience, I’ve neverlooked back. I guess the planning involved isa bit of a time-suck (mapping out the route, typing out the directions, sending out theemail, and making maps and route slips) buthonestly, I have so much fun planning therides, it doesn’t feel like work. I love learningnew routes and meeting new people. I’ve madeso many friends through the rides and had somany fantastic experiences. There is absolute-ly no better way to spend a Saturday morningthan getting a good workout, socializing withfriends, and viewing the most scenic parts ofSan Diego atop a bicycle—all done simultane-ously (and of course, the great food at a localeatery afterwards)!

My advice to new members is: get involved. When I first joined TCSD, I was very intimidat-ed. I started showing up to workouts andsocial events and was amazed at how friendlyand down-to-earth everyone was. I realizedthere was no reason for me to be afraid; I wasway harder on myself than anyone else! Plus, the learning curve is steep. By training withmore experienced triathletes, I learned invalu-able tips and was always motivated to workout because I wanted to see my friends. I’vefound the most difficult decision I have ispicking which workout(s) to do because thereare so many! There is no better way to becomefamiliar with other club members than to par-ticipate in club workouts or races, or betterstill, volunteer for an event.

Craig: If you could wave a magic wand over

the sport of triathlon, what would you like tochange?

Rachel: I would make the sport less intimidat-ing and more inviting for the averageAmerican. Obesity has become such an epi-demic in our country, and most people thinkthey could never do a triathlon. They don’trealize that to finish a sprint triathlon, it’seasier than it seems. Plus, it’s more than justgoing to the gym and running on a treadmill. It’s a lot of fun too, which means people aremore likely to stick with it. Triathlon is verypopular in San Diego but the rest of the coun-try is not so fortunate. I would love to see thesport grow and have more racing opportunitiesaround the country, especially at the Ironmandistance.

Craig: How has triathlon changed your per-spective of your body?

Rachel: When I first started exercising, I wastrying to get toned and shed a few pounds. Mymotivation lay heavily in changing my physi-cal appearance. After I started doing triathlon,my goals started shifting to performance. Ibegan to eat better (i.e. more) because I real-ized I needed to fuel my body properly in orderto go faster and not break down. Now, I appre-ciate what my body can do and am less con-cerned with how it looks. Who cares if I don’thave a six-pack? I can do an Ironman! I amconstantly amazed at the limitless boundariesof how far I can push myself and have gaineda lot of respect and appreciation for my body.Because of this, I think triathlon can be agreat way to build confidence, especially forwomen.

Craig: Why do you race and train triathlons?

Rachel: Besides the obvious (competition, health, and social aspects), I consider myselfan experiential triathlete. I’m not particularlyfast; I’m not out there to win but I alwayshave a fantastic time. I have a triathlon blogso sometimes I joke that I race to blog(admittedly, I have done some cockamamieworkouts just for the blog). Sometimes I feellike a triathlon reporter out there, taking men-tal notes and pictures of everything I experi-ence so I can go home and document it onpaper. It makes each workout and race very

special because I’m always searching for spec-tacular moments; I’m never disappointed. Inaddition, it’s a great exercise for the mind; Inever forget anything. I’m not just training mymuscles and heart; I’m also training my brainto remember every little detail. Because ofthis, I have captured every big race and work-out in writing (complete with photos) so I’llhave those memories forever. One of the rea-sons I love the Ironman distance so much isthat it’s much more of an experience and muchless of a race, at least for me. For the firsttime, I didn’t care about what mile I was on ormy speed. I simply stayed in the moment andenjoyed myself, with each swim stroke, eachpedal stroke, and each footfall, for 140.6miles. It was incredibly liberating. I’ve neverfelt so alive.

Craig: What is the funniest thing that’s hap-pened to you in a triathlon?

Rachel: During my first half-ironman, CA 70.32006, I dug myself into a deep hole by noteating and drinking enough. Needless to say, Igot very dehydrated and began to feel nau-seous, lightheaded, and delirious. I had beenusing the sponges at the aid stations to cooloff and wanted to throw away the used onebut I didn’t want to litter, and I was inbetween aid stations. I saw a mailbox andmistook it for a trash can, accidentally “mail-ing” my used sponge. I wonder what the mail-man thought the next day!

Craig: Hmmm, I hope that’s not why the USPSstopped sponsoring their cycling team. Whatis the most incredible thing that has hap-pened to you during a workout or race?

Rachel: On New Years’ Day 2006, I went for amid-day swim at La Jolla Shores. I swam par-allel to shore since I was alone, just past thebreakers. I was very cold, and the water waspretty choppy. I started feeling very lonelyand negative thoughts kept working their wayin. All of a sudden, I heard this very loudclacking noise under the water. Confused, Ilooked up to see what it was. A pod of 6 or 7dolphins had swam just a few meters awayfrom me and were checking me out. It was asif they were saying, “Hey there! Everythingokay? You look like you could use some com-pany.” They seemed so kind and peaceful; I

felt warm and protected. The current waspulling me towards them, and I was worried Iwould unwittingly invade their space. As soonas the thought passed through my mind, theybegan swimming out to sea and within sec-onds, they had disappeared. I realized howsilly my concern had been; they are suchincredible, graceful swimmers. Ever since then,my love for swimming in the ocean has deep-ened.

Craig: What races would you like to do in thefuture?

Rachel: Right now, I’m training for my firstreal marathon, the Nike Women’s San FranciscoMarathon, October 19th. In addition, I can’twait for my next Ironman. I am trying forIronman Canada in 2009 but those slots arehighly coveted so I’m trying to use some tricksup my sleeves to get in. Right now, I reallywant to focus on marathons and ironman-dis-tance races since those distances feel the eas-iest for my body—long and slow. In thefuture, I would really love to do an UltraMarathon. I absolutely love distance runningand feel a strange calling for a 50- or 100-milerun. But I realize this is not a rational desire.

Craig: What do you do for a living?

Rachel: I’m a research scientist in the cardio-vascular and obesity field. Right now, I’mdoing a postdoctoral fellowship at the ScrippsResearch Institute. I study the connectionbetween inflammation and immunity in heartdisease. Heart disease is the number onecause of death in men and women in the U.S.I wonder how many cases could be preventa-ble through healthy lifestyle changes, such asdiet and exercise. Since my career requires meto be acutely aware of how the rising trend ofobesity is impacting people in our country, Ihave been further motivated to adopt thetriathlon lifestyle.

Craig: What do you enjoy doing when you’renot working, training, or racing?

Rachel: I love animals and spend my free timewith my two pet bunnies, Babs and Taz.They’re great pets for recovery! I used to bemore active in animal rescue and would like toget more involved again in the future. I alsolove to paint and write. In addition, I love

The Camp Pendleton Hard Corps race seriesfeatures some great events. There are ofcourse the two Mud Runs, running races ofvarious distances, a duathlon, internation-al distance tri and a bike race. But thebest race of all is the Camp Pendletonsprint triathlon held on the Navy basedhome of the Swift Intruders.

What makes this event so unique and Imean one of a kind unique, is that theevent is that the majority of the race takesplace with in the 'secret wall compund'that houses the hovercraft. When you trav-el on hwy 5, you can not help but noticethe towering cement walls and wonder justwhat the heck is going on in there.

The transtion area is set at the base ofthe landing ramp used by the craft CampPendleton triathlon transition areaforentering and exiting the ocean. This land-ing ramp also is the worst hill of the wholecourse and you climb it twice when leav-ing transition on the bike and run. So foryour first event, know it doesn't get any-more difficult than that.

The swim is an ocean swim and duringthe summer you should expect some surfas we see a predominant south swell andthis area of San Diego county is usually acouple feet larger than most areas south. This day the surf was 2–3 with an occa-sional 4 foot set waves. The only real chal-

lenge was a large 7–8 foot deep troughand then a sandbar again which is wherethe surf broke again. This caused somefunky current conditions. When the surfwas down, there was a bit of a north cur-rent, but once the waves came the currentturned and pushed north. Another thingyou can count on is a Camp Pendleton

sprint triathlon ocean swim start perfect68–70 water temperature.

The bike route is a very easy out andback with no real hills at all. Truly the only‘hills’ are an overpass to cross hwy 5 and arise out of a stormwash. Do they slowdown your effort? Yes,but they really are nota climb. When youmake your turn on toLas Pulgas, it doesseem as though it is aconstant elevationgain, so do not let yournecessary extra effortdiscourage you as onceyou make the turn it willbe time to drop down acouple gears and let the legs go!!

Coming back in to transition the prevail-ing thought for me was, “dang, now wehave to run up that ramp!!” It really isn'tthat bad. Just short quick turnover and getit over with. The run course is containedwithin the Intruders compound and you

run through and around numerous hover-craft as well as the hangars, cranes andother machinery used to maintain thefleet. It really is pretty cool to be thereamongst the workings. Additionally, withall the distractions and the windingunmarked course, you never really knowwhere you are, so you don‘t know if you

are hurting or not. What Imean by this is, if you see amile a marker, you gaugeyour effort and how your legsfeel towards what is left.Sometimes this a negativementally when you calculatethat if I feel this way now, Iam bummed with ‘x’ numberof miles left. I guess it couldbe surmised as ignorance isbliss!!!

Now that the run is wind-ing down, you come around

the corner of the last Camp Pendletonsprint triathlon finish resultshangar andthere is the finish line. What distinguishesit is not so much the balloons and ban-ners, it is the parked hovercraft that you

cross thorough with Marines waiting foryour bib and chip. That’s another thingabout any of the Hard Corp races. Being onthe base there are so many ‘voluntold’Marines out there helping to make all theevents GREAT. It makes these events a

great opportunity to thank those guys for what they do andthey really do appreciate it.

As for results, local Ironman Champion and Carlsbad resi-dent Michelie Jones rode her bike over to make sure she gotin her warm up and won the womens Triathlon club of sandiegofield in 1:17:15 only beating me by about 15 minutes. The Triathlon Club of San Diego had a great presence at therace and had two club members, Philippe Krebs and ShaneBuysse place 2nd and third overall. Funny thing, Phillipe beatShane by three seconds, but was in a later wave. Wonder howboth their times would have been if they were on the coursetogether?

I would have to say that this race in my opinion should sellout as fast as the Mud Runs and should certainly sell outbefore the International. As a sponsor of both of these racesmy inbox was flooded with requests for entries because theraces sold out. make sure you sign up early and if you can notrace, call it a donation to the guys who are out there support-ing our country everyday. It’s the middle of the summer and our skin isstarting to lose all the moisture that we accu-mulated in the spring. Daily exposure to thesun, hot temperatures, the ocean and air conditioning dry our bodies slowly but surely,so we end up with rough, cracked skin andmore prone to bruises and sunburns.

The eyes and the feet suffer heat and dryness the most. If your eyes are red anditchy or hot and your feet get dry and cracked, follow these suggestions from different natural medicine traditions to quench yourbody’s thirst. See you later alligator!

Outer care:From Aromatherapy: Mix Lavender essen-

tial oil with coconut or almond oil in equalparts and apply to dry skin surface morningand night.

Internal Moisturizing:From Ayurveda: Fill a glass with half aloe

vera juice and half water. Add a splash of limejuice and enjoy. Drink as much as 3 glassesdaily to rehydrate and cool the body.

From Traditional Chinese Medicine: Addblack sesame seeds to the water when cookingrice (same proportion of rice to seeds). Thismix tastes delicious and is wonderful forrelieving dryness and constipation.

Alternatively, drizzle sesame oil over yourfood once served and enjoy!
