30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATORY DINNERTyler Catholic School Foundation Announces Record Attendance
On Sunday, December 8, The Tyler Catholic School Foundation celebrated its Thirtieth Anniversary with more than 180 friends, patrons and supporters at the Cathedral Center near downtown Tyler.
Starting the evening on a festive note, the T. K. Gorman student string ensemble performed as Gorman student ambassadors welcomed guests and benefactors.
Guest of honor and founder, Monsignor Milam Joseph, was warmly embraced by past parishioners, friends and clergy at the reception preceding the dinner.
Bishop Joseph Strickland and Bishop Edmond Carmody were both in attendance to greet supporters and invitees. Following welcoming remarks from TCSF Board member Rick Rayford, the St. Gregory Cathedral School Choir sang the invocation.
Collin Maloney, President-Elect, briefly illustrated the 30 years history, mission and goals of the Foundation, as he reminded the audience of his own Catholic school experience.
To everyone’s delight, students Rebecca Bowles (Gorman) and Joseph Benedict (St. Gregory) each delivered a heartfelt and inspiring address “What a Catholic education means to me.” Excerpts from their remarks are also included in this newsletter. Guests later described the remarks as “a timely reminder of the importance of supporting our two outstanding Catholic schools.”
Later in the program, Monsignor Joseph described these two students, representatives of our Catholic Schools, as filled with “awe” and “wonder” and our “greatest hope for the future.” Monsignor Joseph was honored with a Crystal Madonna in recognition of his beloved mother, Anne Joseph. A Crystal Madonna is awarded annually to completed scholarships funded at $25,000.
Additionally, Madonnas were awarded to Kelly and Danny Jackman, in honor of the Jackman Family Scholarship; Bishop Edmond Carmody, in recognition of the Bishop Carmody Scholarship; and Bishop Joseph Strickland, in honor of the Bishop Strickland Scholarship.
Most sincere appreciation goes to the Thirtieth Anniversary dinner co-chairs, Mary Lauren Faulkner and Vince Richbourg and the very generous Thirtieth Anniversary sponsors and underwriters who made the evening a success.

TYLER CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOUNDATION RECEIVES LARGEST CONTRIBUTION SINCE INCEPTION
WHAT A CATHOLIC EDUCATION MEANS TO ME By Joseph Benedict
Catholic education means three things to me: the quality of the education, the value of it being Catholic, and how they go together.
First is the Catholic part. Every day at St. Gregory we get to learn about God. We get to go to Mass on Thursdays, unlike public schools. I love how there is a cross everywhere so I can always turn to God and pray anytime. We learn to serve God and our neighbors. We do many
community service projects such as the canned food drive, and the fifth graders make blankets. Last year we donated OFF spray when there were a lot of mosquitoes.
Then there’s the educational part. I used to go to a public school and they didn’t help us learn as fast as we do here. I learn so much more at St. Gregory than I did there. We also have special programs such as Independent Researchers which allows me to be individually challenged. We have Independent Readers which allows me and encourages me to read more.
The teachers here always try to provide us with the right answer. They do things that we students could never do. They first have to learn all of the stuff themselves and then teach it to us. They help us to learn even if all of us have different styles of learning. They are our guiders and protectors. They love us and I believe that they truly know how to serve God and teach us to serve God.
I think that these two things {Catholic and Education} go together hand in hand. We are required to grow in our faith and I think the best place to do it is at St. Gregory.

WHAT A CATHOLIC EDUCATION MEANS TO ME Excerpts from remarks by Rebecca Bowles made at the Thirtieth Anniversary Dinner
My name is Rebecca Bowles, and I am a junior at Bishop T.K. Gorman Regional Catholic School. Catholic schooling is in my blood. My uncles and mother went to Catholic schools in Houston, and both of my older sisters attended Gorman. Living in Athens Texas, I have been a part of the Catholic school system since the fourth grade. I am an A+ student taking advanced classes with a 4.0 GPA.
As captain of the swim team, member of the NASA club, founder of the STEM club, participant in math and art TAPPS, and flutist, there is not much extra time on my hands.
I have however, always had an acute awareness of the impact that Catholic school has had in my life: Opportunity. As a freshman, I had the incredible opportunity to work with a group of fellow Gorman students and NASA on the Orion capsule, a future manned mission to Mars. In this project we designed part
of the mock up module, a testing area for engineers and astronauts to improve, train, and simulate an actual mission. We helped to design parts of this module and were an integral part of the planning process, working directly with NASA and the UT Tyler engineering department.
Following this partnership, the group went to Korolev, Russia to participate in the International Space Olympics. We competed in tests in math, physics, and literature against students from countries around the world. This incredible chance allowed us to see how other countries learn, how their education systems differ from our own, and to see the skills it would take to succeed in a globally competitive environment. This spring I will be participating in the High School Aerospace Scholars program, an independent course offered by NASA focusing on the math and science behind the aerospace field.
None of this would have been possible without Gorman.
Due to the small size of the school, the teachers are given the unique opportunity to develop an individual interest in each student that passes through, wanting them to succeed and willing to help them do so. This interest in all the students is a distinctive characteristic of Catholic schools and Gorman in particular. The teachers develop a Christian love for each student and seek to help them, giving them confidence.
Catholic school has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. The sacrifices I must make to attend Gorman are well worth it, for the attention and opportunity that I receive in return far outweigh any cons of the situation. The Christian environment allows for teachers to encourage the students and this give students the confidence to go far in life. Because of everything that I have been able to do through the school, I have been shaped into the person I am today and am prepared to be a Christian example in whatever I do.

Q&A WITH PRESIDENT COLLIN MALONEYIn January 2014, Collin Maloney was named President of the Tyler Catholic School Foundation. Collin shared his vision for the Foundation in this interview.
Q Collin, congratulations on your new position. What do you see as your most important goals and objectives as President?
A I think the overriding mission of the Tyler Catholic School Foundation has always been to support our two Catholic Schools. Although the demographics of Tyler have changed in the past 30 years, we remain focused on our core goal – to provide financial assistance to our schools and to insure that anyone who has a sincere desire to attend our schools can do so. In fact, 90 percent of our funds go to needy students to aid in their school tuition. To that end, we will continue increasing the number of scholarships and endowments to the Foundation.
Q You have recently established your own family scholarship. With two children in Catholic School, what prompted you to do this now?
A Many people don’t realize that you can establish a scholarship with the Foundation with as little as $100. The scholarship can be funded periodically whenever the donor chooses. The Foundation calls these “developing scholarships” and the donor can contribute to the scholarship whenever the appropriate occasion presents itself such as at the end of the year for an annual contribution, in memorial for the passing of a friend or family member, or in honor of a teacher, etc. The Foundation does not send out billing notices unless the donor wishes. This is a great way to honor someone while providing long-term support of the Catholic Schools at the same time. In many cases, the Family that establishes a scholarship chooses their Family Name, i.e., the Mr. and Mrs. John Smith Family Scholarship.
Q When is a scholarship completely funded? How much time does a donor have to fund their scholarship?
A The foundation established the guidelines of $25,000 as fully funded. However, we have many scholarships that far exceed the $25,000 level. Some scholarships are funded by multiple generations; the father and mother establish the fund and the children complete the funding at a much later time. In some instances, a scholarship becomes fully funded when a family member departs and memorial gifts sent to the Foundation are designated to the scholarship.
Q If you were speaking to someone that has kids in the school system currently, what would you tell them about why they should consider a gift to the Foundation?
A We encourage all parents to contribute both to the schools and to the Foundation. I like to think of the Foundation as the “Savings Account” for the schools. While funds are certainly needed for the current needs of the school, gifts to the Foundation serve as an investment in the schools where the gift can have an indefinite payout.
Q How is contributing to the Foundation different from contributing to the schools?
A The Foundation focuses on long-term funding and has been contributing funds to the schools for 30 years now. Our corpus has grown from $100,000 to $4 million. We only distribute the earnings to the two schools, allowing your gift to give in perpetuity. If you give now, you give both to your children today and the children of tomorrow. And, thirty years from now, 2044, the Foundation will still be supporting our schools.
Q Any additional thoughts?
A Yes, I would like to encourage our parishioners and supporters to consider this; as an alternative to sending flowers to a family after a loss of a loved one, please consider a donation to the Tyler Catholic School Foundation in honor of the deceased. This gift lives forever and gives our children their best hope for the future.
Q What’s on your calendar the next few months?
A We’re planning our 22nd Annual Milam Joseph Golf Tournament at Willow Brook Country Club. It’s a great way to support our two schools and have some fun at the same time! Please come out to the links and join us on Monday, April 14. I’ll be there with my team, handicaps and all! We’re happy to announce that the Foundation now accepts credit cards, so a player or team may choose to use this option.
Q Collin, thanks for your time; any closing remarks?
A I’m honored and humbled to be a part of this incredible organization! Thanks.
