Tragedy on Mill City HillLocal man dies while felling trees

Midnight on December 31, 2011 didn’t just mark a new year, it signified a new life for two local families and one business. When the clock struck twelve times, the Mountain Edge Cafe in Mill City officially changed hands from Dale and Mary Kirsch, of Gates to Russ and Susie Foltz of Mill City. The Kirschs’ have lived in the canyon area all their lives, both graduating from Stayton High. They married in 1956 and began a family. In 1972 they moved to Mill City with their 5 children and bought the building just west of Circle K that was a Western Auto store at the time. It eventually be-came Kirsch True Value and was a

community staple for years. In 1981, they built a new build-ing next door to complement the western architecture of their busi-ness. They leased it out, originally housing a bank and Mike’s Cafe, which replaced the only break-fast place in town that had burned down the year prior, Viv’s cafe. Dale and Mary watched the cafe change hands over the years, while remaining the land owners. They retired from the hardware business in 2001 and settled into their home on the river. In 2010 they found themselves, admit-tedly reluctantly, in the restau-rant business after the tenants left abruptly.

“It was quite a challenge, we were retired, and had never actually managed a restaurant before,” said Mary Kirsch. Now, they’re ready to retire. “Oh yes! We have been ready!” Mary reinstates. Thank you Dale and Mary for your years of service. Now, meet Russ Foltz and

Winter is here, bring cooler weather. The Mill City Fire Department would like to pass on these heating safety tips to assure that Canyon area residents stay warm without getting burned. Give space heaters space. Put at least 36 inches of empty space between the heater and everything else, such as furniture, papers and people. Check the cords on portable heaters. Replace frayed or cracked cords. If the cord gets hot, unplug it and have the heater serviced. A overheated cord can cause a fire. Do not use a extension cord with por-table heaters, this is a common cause of fires. Turn off/unplug portable

heaters when you leave your home or when you go to bed. Clean the flue of your woodstove or fireplace at least once a year, twice a year if wood is your primary heat source. Have forced air furnaces ser-viced annually, and change the filters every six months. Dirty filters can start on fire. Kerosene heaters are not approved for use in Oregon. Kerosene heaters are prone to sudden flare ups, and they emit noxious and deadly fumes. For more heating safety tips contact the Mill City Fire Department at 503- 897-2390 or your local fire depart-ment in Lyons, Stayton or Detroit.

New Year’s Eve at Mill City Eagles Lodge

Cheers! An open letter of appreciation to the fine people of the North Santiam Canyon from The Canyon Weekly: We have come to know, over the past year, what an amazing, diverse and unique community well all live in and have come to know as Home. When reading our national news it tells us, “We are in recession! Run for your lives!” Then we see our neighbors,

opening businesses, starting festivals, growing gardens and making space and activities for our children to grow. They seem to say: “Recession? Ha, ha! What recession?” And they thrive. Here’s to a community we are proud to serve. Cheers.

Here’s to 2012!~And may you prosper

well into 2013~

Big brownwater is what we will have in the North Santiam River this week. All that rain last week caused Detroit Lake to fill up 46 feet above low pool, and that needs to drain out so we continue to have flood protection. That process causes the North Santiam River to be very high, sometimes for weeks after a storm. Most sections are runnable by experts with spe-cial equipment, but these high water trips may be epic. The Little North Fork has enough water for boat trips this week. That is a special treat, since the flow is often too low for navigation. It will clear up before the main North Santiam, and the lower six miles is a wonderful trip. As the North Santiam and Willamette Rivers warm up and clear up a little, good numbers of steelhead will start coming up-stream from the Falls at Oregon City. So far, we have 503 Winter Steelhead and the number will grow slowly in January and February with big numbers starting in March and April and May. It is a new year, and we hope for good runs of steelhead and salmon. Steelheaders Salem Chapter board meets this Wednesday, January 4 at Wholesale Sports in Salem at 6:30p.m. Chapter ac-tivities and programs will be discussed. Ongoing clinics and Minto Park cleanups will be planned for. With good planning, we can enjoy the best of the river when conditions improve.

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden will have one of his first town hall meetings of the new year in Stayton. The meeting will start at 3pm Friday, Jan 6 at Stayton Community Center, 400 W. Virginia St.

All are invited to attend.

man, the five star restaurant at the Inn at Otter Crest. Between the two of them, the Foltzs have 7 children and 9 grandchildren, with many of whom continue to make their home in the canyon. “It’s so cool to be back amongst friends and family!” said Russ, while he busily took stock of the stores. “We are excited, this is exactly what we’ve been wanting to do. Used to being around each other they report no challenge foreseen in starting a busi-ness together. “We’ve always worked together, never really been apart,” said Susie. Russ ads that they have no plans to change the menu any time soon, but will be adding a couple sandwiches and some soups, and looking at some healthier alternatives down the road. The Foltz family took over December 31 at midnight. At 6am on January 1, they served their first breakfast. Mountain Edge Cafe hours will be extended immediately: 6am-3pm, 7 days a week, with breakfast still all day, and a dinner menu being planned with additional hours to be announced soon.
