The Company…Air Handlers has been trading since May 1989,and has just celebrated 25 years in business in2014. The Company operates from its 60,000 SqFt Factory in Salford Quays which was purposebuilt in year 2000.

Product Development...The Company is continually updating its productsto comply with changing energy savingtechnologies, so the introduction of the AHTWCompact Range of air handling units is based onchanges in specific fan power and heat recoverylegislation adopting higher energy savingtechnology.

Compliance...The AHTW air handling units comply with BS EN1886 Class L2 Construction Standards. Airhandling unit construction and ErP EuropeanDirective January 2018 for energy recoveryefficiencies.

Acoustic Performance...Extensive acoustic testing of caseworkconstruction has been carried out at both thecompanies testing facilities, and SalfordUniversity Acoustic Testing Laboratory. Acoustictests were carried out on eleven doubleskin, composite panel/frame systems,eight different triple and quadruple skincomposite panel/frame systems, to BS.EN ISO10140-2 (2010) which have allbeen certified as UKAS accredited.

Location…AHTW Compact Package Heat Reclaim Air HandlingUnits are normally located internally inplantrooms, external to the building or on the roof.

Construction… FrameInsulated extruded anodised aluminium pentapostsections with solid die cast mechanical fit cornersare used to build each frame. The frame isacoustically insulated to prevent noise leakage.

PanelsPanels are flush fitted into the frame and air sealedwith neoprene gaskets. A range of acousticallyinsulated panels are available to meet the soundreduction required in the space.

Access PanelsAll access panels will be flush mounted in theframe, and constructed as the fixed panels. Fan andcontrol panel access panels will be lockable. Quickrelease, other access panels will have multidirectional handles.

Heat RecoveryThe energy recovery device used on the AHTWCompact is a variable speed rotary thermal wheelwith a minimum efficiency of 73% in accordancewith the January 2018 European DirectivePerformance Eurovent Certified.

Filters

Filters are fitted to both the fresh air and return airinlets. G4 grade panel filters are used as standard.

Disposable multi pocket bag filters can be offeredas an alternative or secondary filter with grades F5,F6, F7 available. Manometers or pressuredifferential guages factory fitted are available as anoption.

Heating Coil

Low temperature hot water heating coils arecontained within the casework on slide rails for theease of removal. Coils are constructed as standardfrom copper tubes and headers with aluminium fins.

Optional coil construction: • Bare tube (frost coils)

• Wide spaced fins (frost coils)

• Polyester coated fins.

• Blygold coated fins.

• Copper fins.

• HTM – 03 compliant coils.

Cooling Coil Options

Cooling coil options are available to offer mechanicalcooling, direct expansion or chilled water coilsconstructed from copper tubes and headers withaluminium fins as standard.

Optional coil construction: • Polyester coated aluminium fins.

• Blygold coated fins.

• Copper fins.

• Copper fins electro tinned.

• HTM -03 Compliant.

Drain trays are fitted to cooling coils and can befixed or removable, all drain trays have a inbuiltslope.

Manufactured with sheathed elements, and fittedwith a high temperature cut out. Balanced phaseelements are arranged for thyristor or step control.

Fans

AHTW Compact air handling units have supply andreturn air backward curved centrifugal plug typefans, direct driven by high efficiency EC motors.

This method of scroll free fan produces an optimallow loss flow of air through the impeller so thereare no longer any drastic cross sectional changes.

Fan Inlet Flow grids… By fitting an inlet flow grid to the supply fan it ispossible to achieve significant noise reductionfrom the fan.

The noise reduction is predominantly lowfrequency decay (i.e. 63Hz, 125Hz, 250Hz), whichcan help offer significant sound power loss. Thissound power loss is created by the reduction inturbulence hitting the rotating blades, with tonalfrequency components, known as impellor noise ortonal noise.

Tonal noise consists of the blade – passing noiseand its harmonics. The frequency of the blade –passing noise can be calculated as the sum of thefan speed and the number of blades.

A flow-grid fitted to the inlet of the fans willsignificantly reduce the low frequency noisegenerated disturbance. The vortex is split whenimpacting the grille as it is considerably weakenedwhen it flows through the flowgrid.

Sound pressure is reduced, particularly the lowfrequency. The chart below indicates the powerloss in octave bands.

Dampers

All dampers are constructed from an aerofoilsection double skin aluminium blade profile withedge, blade and side seals to offer low leakage.

The blade rotation is performed by rigid nylon cogswhich operate out of Air Stream. The damperoperating mechanism is connected to an optionalfactory fitted and pre-wired actuator via a squarebrass drive shaft.

Thermal Insulated Dampers

Thermally insulated blades can be provided forfresh air and exhaust air shut off dampers whichadd protection to filters and coil freezing.

Fans

Motors operate via a 0-10V DC output from themotor, it provides infinitely variable speed control.

Backward curved scroll free fans are quiet runningwith optimised airflow through the impeller, givingsignificantly reduced tonal noise.

Multi fan wall arrangements are used to achievehigher air flow performance and efficiency.

Baseframes… Formed 2.5mm galvanised steel baseframes arefitted to all AHTW Compact air handling units, astandard height of 100mm is included, butoptional increased height baseframes are availableon request.

In the case of HTM - 03 and healthcare projects,the baseframe will be as laid down in thespecifications.

All baseframes incorporate lifting points in builtinto the baseframe and designed to suit thespecific lifting weight of the air handling unit.

Lifting instructions and method statement forsecuring lifting equipment are issued with OEMinformation on delivery.

Controls… AHTW Compact air handling units can be suppliedwith an optional in built controls package withweatherproof options.

Standard Control Package

This option includes for the control panel to bebuilt into the air handling unit casework ormounted directly onto it.

All internal components will be pre-wired withisolators, actuators, sensors, thermostats, pressureswitches all factory fitted.

The control system will incorporate a controllerwhich contains features to act independent orwith BMS. Modbus or BACnet facility. Displayfeatures can be provided on the controller.

The control package includes speed controllersbuilt into the controller to speed regulate the E Cfans.

Control system options: • Trend, Carel or similar controller.

• Output facility to operate remote condensingunit(s) or heat pump unit(s).

• Output to operate a thyristor controller(additional) for electric heater 0 < 10 Volttemperature regulation.

Accreditation… In partnership with Salford University acoustictesting laboratory a range of composite acousticpanels have been designed and tested.To obtain the true casework noise breakout, theframe and panel assembly have to be tested with alarge enough area sample to give a truerepresentation of AHTW Compact casework.In practice the framework can leak sound whichwill flank the panels. Therefore the frame must beacoustically insulated to the same standard as thepanels.

Attenuator Performance…Insertion losses for different attenuatorlengths serving atmospheric and systemside, for both integral or bolt on style.

Attenuation… All attenuators are provided to match theAHTW Compact unit and can be supplied as anintegral or bolt on arrangement. This isrecommended to prevent noise flanking theattenuators, or the need to acoustic lag theductwork.

If the attenuators are positioned away from thenoise source (i.e. AHTW Compact), then ductnoise breakout will occur, unless the duct isacoustically lagged to the same high standard,as the AHTW Casework.

Option 1

Splitter absorbers inbuilt into the AHTW Compactunit Casework which provides a uniform caseworkappearance, as shown on Figures 2 and 3 on page 47.

Option 2

Duct style attenuators with bolt on arrangement asshown below. The splitter absorbers are containedwithin a galvanized flanged sheet steel duct. Purposedesigned bolt on type attenuators have mezz ordolby flanges to match the air handling unit frames,and can have optional inlet/outlet fairings.

Acoustic Louvre…As an option to attenuators or attenuator cowlson the air intake and discharge of external AHTWair handling units, acoustic louvres can be used asan alternative method of reducing theatmospheric side air noise. Four different depthsare available with the noise reduction,dimensions and weights as shown on pages 48

and 49.

Acoustic louvres have four depths, offering adifferent insertion loss for each depth. The chart onpage 48 gives the noise reduction for each depth300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm.
