Georges Vanier SS has 255 students taking Simplified Mandarin and earning credit for their high school graduation. Its elementary division has 522 students in 24 simplified Mandarin classes JK-8.

POPULATION COMPARISONS:

The populations of Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai together are 13.2 million more than the whole country of Canada. The land mass of China and Canada are almost the same. Beijing and Shanghai each have more inhabitants than the Province of Ontario.

By 2040 it is projected that India will have the largest population in the world. Chinese are limited to one child per family, India has no such restriction.

ECONOMIC FACTS:

China is now the world’s No. 5 Consumer: China has become the 5th largest market for consumer spending, at $890 Billion, following the U.S., Japan, the U.K. and Germany. The ratio of China’s personal consumption to GDP is only 36%, half of the U.S. figure and two-thirds of the figures in Europe and Japan, indicating the market still has enormous growth potential.

YANGTZE DELTA AREA

Expressways criss-cross the landscape, factories everywhere, in one town, simultaneous construction of 30 high-rise buildings, 20 stories high, 6 apartments per floor, that is about 3,600 apartments at one go, and since grandma and grandpa or other family members are likely to live in and share, perhaps 4 – 6 people per apartment.

That is about 18,000 new residents in a matter or 2 or 3 months.

RAILWAYS:

New high speed rail line from Shanghai to Beijing is underway. The aim is to have it ready for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.

The MAG_LEV train from Shanghai to the Pudong Airport operates at 431 km/hour. It took 8 minutes to cover 55 kms.
