After a couple of years off, The MOUNTAIN MEN are back. Driven by Tony Vincent of Waihou, and Dave “Higgie” Higgins from COBRAS, the Mountain Men Golden Oldies rugby team, is a mix of Gentlemen ranging from 35 to as old as you feel. The emphasise of the team is to still be able to partake in the sport we’ve loved, at a level we can still enjoy. As Jimmy says “You’re more likely to pull a lung muscle from laughing than a leg muscle from running”.Into our second year with Vinnie and Higgie in charge the squad numbers are good, with about 40 members. On any game day, be it home or away we normally have between 18 to 25 players turn up, which is great for us old guys as the game has rolling subs and you can just sub off for a spell if you get a bit buggered. Games are normally 20 minutes each way with rules such as no kicking and a maximum of 15 metres running with the ball before you have to pass. Each team has its own oddball calls with such things as “short line outs” where everyone is on their knees, or “long scrums” where we all pack behind each other and the ball has to go between all our legs. All in all the Mountain Men is a great way of getting together with some like-minded guys, having a laugh and enjoying everything good about rugby. Oh and occasionally when that fend works or that sidestep reappears from your past, it all comes back and you could have been an ALL BLACK ha ha.Anyone interested in the occasional run around should contactVinnie on 027 920 6687 Higgie on 884 7176

TREASURES IN TE AROHAA very special Exhibition will be on show at Te Aroha & District Museum from 08 June to 28 July 2013.On display will be thier treasured possessions, the “Broderie perse” quilt and the Piupiu/Rapaki, both dated from the 1850’s, and have recently returned from Wellington where they have been restored and conserved. Joining these precious artifacts will be a beautiful shawl donated by the Scott Family, Ngarua, who have recently held a family reunion.Janice Parsell, Museum President, said that she was thrilled and excited about the return of the artifacts and, along with Colleen Maloney & Daphne Ellis, has led this exhibition, and hopes to have very many people take the opportunity to view the Museum’s oldest treasures.*None of this would have been possible without the support of MPDC.

Aroha Advertiser - Page 3
Scott Simpson, MP CoromandelOn the right trackTe Aroha people are certainly not afraid of hard work and, whether it’s the dealing with the challenges of farming or the ever changing small business environment, they understand that reward often only comes after a great deal of graft and at times sacrifice. The job of Government is no different. We have had some challenging years where we have had to be very careful and indeed clever about how we spend your precious tax revenue.Budget 2013 proved that this prudent management of our nation’s books is starting to pay off. Budget 2013 had nothing weird, strange or unusual from Bill English. No printing money and no threats to raise taxes or nationalise businesses. Instead his fifth budget provides more support for families, and it forecasts more economic growth, more jobs, rising wages, and, crucially, a return to surplus in 2014/15. Achieving this level of stability has provided us with a solid platform to move forward and start delivering new programmes to deliver more growth opportunities and even better public services for all New Zealanders, including those in Te Aroha. The Government has committed $5.1 billion over four years for new initiatives in areas such as science and innovation, health, education, welfare, and housing. And we’re signalling ACC levy cuts for businesses and families from next year which will be a welcome boost for workers, farmers and entrepreneurs in Te Aroha. We have allocated $1.5 billion raised from the Mighty River Power share sale to upgrade schools, invest in irrigation infrastructure and KiwiRail, and of course rebuild Christchurch’s hospitals.Next year health spending will be at its highest level ever. This will see more patients getting operations sooner, more children being vaccinated, and more of our seniors in care and at home getting the support they need and deserve.I’ve said it previously and I will say it again, education is one of the most valuable gifts we can provide for our children and an area where we need to see continuous investment to properly prepare our young people for today’s dynamic labour market.Spending across education, including tertiary, will increase next year to $12.4 billion. This will see more children participating in early childhood education, a programme to address behavioural issues which prevent children learning and the fast-tracking of the schools network upgrade which will give students and teachers access to fast, reliable wireless broadband enabling them to avail of modern digital learning opportunities.
While it is great news that we are on the brink of a return to surplus, what is really heartening for me is that, even at a time of deficit, we have actually been able to improve services for New Zealand individuals and families. Crime is at its lowest level for 30 years, hospital waiting times are down, more kids are achieving in our schools. This has been done by tightening up back-office operations and getting more funding out to the frontline where it is most needed. I look forward to seeing more of the same as the Government continues restructuring our public services to make sure the hard working tax payers of Te Aroha are getting the best possible value for their money.More information from Parliament and around the electorate is available at www.scottsimpson.co.nz or email YES NEWSLETTER with your name and address to [email protected] to receive my latest newsletter.

Wheelie bins coming to a kerbsideWe are working with Hauraki and Thames-Coromandel District Councils to deliver an enhanced kerbside recycling service from October. The improved service includes the introduction of a wheelie bin for recycling (paper, plastics and tin) and will significantly increase the opportunity to recycle c o m m o n h o u s e h o l d items.Council rubbish bags and green recycling crates will still be used; the only d i f f e r e n c e is the crates will be used for glass recycling only. All residents who currently receive the kerbside recycling service will receive a wheelie bin. These will be delivered to homes from late July along with an information pack.Read more online at www.kerbside.co.nz.

TE AROHABUSINESS ASSOCIATION
INCORPORATED
Te Aroha - Fieldays ‘Big Little Town’ winners for three years in a row! Congratulations and well done to all participating businesses and non-profit organisations. We know we’re good but we do have to blow our trumpet quite loudly in Te Aroha to let everyone else know too. Te Aroha i-SITE welcomes new staff member, Tina Brown. Tina is already well known to many of you as a medical herbalist and massage therapist. One of her first questions was ‘What do you do at i-SITE?’ So here are some of the questions we get…
Where is the track to the top of the mountain? Which way to Tauranga? What’s happening around town? When’s the geyser going to blow? Can you find a phone number or address? Do you have a map for local addresses, businesses and for tramping?Where is the temperature read in Te Aroha? How deep are the Spa pools? Can you book me a bus? Can I take my bike on the bus?Accommodation; what, where and how to get thereI want to go to Hobbiton – can you book me in?Where can I get it locally?Do you sell souvenirs?
There is also the perception that i-SITE is here only for visitors – Not true! We can help locals, too!Going for a walk or bike ride? We’ll help you get prepared and point you in the right direction. Are you holding an event you want the public to know about? Tell us and we’ll tell everyone!Need a venue for a special occasion and somewhere for the friends and rellies to stay? We can help with that too.Does your business want to be found? Are you on our website? If not, then we need your details. If so, are your details up to date? Same goes for clubs and organisations. As you can see, you have to be really clever to work at i-SITE and know the answers to all kinds of questions and there’s no such thing as a silly question. If we don’t know then…we ask Jeanette.
Stay warm till next month – the clever team at i-SITE

WAIHOU COMMUNITY HALL 100 YEARS OLDThe Waihou Community Hall will turn 100 years old on the 14th June 2014, and the local people are gearing up for a bumper celebration.Waihou was originally laid out to be the main town in Eastern Waikato and many families established their homes and businesses there. Original settlers included the Jacksons, the Coopers , the Rickabys, Rutherfords, Kyds , McCabes, Mikkelsens, and many others. Many descendents of these settlers still remain in the Waihou area, and provide living histories of the community that waxed and waned around the Hall over the last 100 years. With the rail head set at Waihou to serve settlement in the area, the growth of the Waihou town seemed assured….until gold was found at Wairongamai!!!!People immediately voted with their pockets and the rest is history. And that is what the Waihou Centenary Committee is planning to celebrate. If you have family stories and photos that are part of that history and in particular associated with the role that the Waihou Hall played in that history the committee led by Ernie Bygraves and Marie Kyd wants to hear from you Please contact Ernie on (07) 884 8414.
PRACTISE YOUR WEDDING DANCE AT WAIHOUWe went to the wedding of our Grandson last week and the festivities that followed the speeches, start-ed with the bridal Foxtrot! It was a dance of love, performed with wooden steps and was just rescued by the clear adoration that the two dancers felt for each other. So tradition still has place in the celebrations that still matter to us all. And bringing that sense of lasting tradition with a modern setting of live music is the monthly dance night held in the Waihou Hall. Any couples inter-ested in coping with performing at their approach-ing wedding would find this venue a great place to learn and conquer the basics.Last Friday the first of this seasons dances, was well attended by an enthusiastic group of danc-ers and the specially built floor in the ancient Hall came alive. The programme included waltzes, foxtrots, se-quence, line, some latin dances and plenty of “dance as the music takes you” for the “free ex-pressionistas” among us.Set in a relaxed café arrangement of candle lit ta-bles where friends could enjoy catching up, the evening offered a mixture of socialising and good cardio vascular exercise. The Ballroom @ Waihou evening is held each third Friday of the month through the winter and costs $8.00 per head.A plate and BYO provide refreshments and supper.

NOTES FROM THE PAST1883 Te Aroha residents agitated for the State to
give it new facilities. A somewhat disgusted Te Aroha News pointed out that they should take example of what the businessmen of Wairongomai had done, and put their own shoulders to the wheel. They had constructed a 4ft footpath of a substantial and costly nature at their own expense. Why not help themselves likewise!
1885 The Te Aroha Police district covered an area forty miles (64 kilometres) long by twenty miles (32 kilometres) wide, and included Matamata and Morrinsville.
1885 The first rail excursion to Te Aroha took place on 21 March 1885 - five years after the fabled gold rush. Reports stated that the train was well filled, but only went as far as Morrinsville, where passengers took coach to Te Aroha where they mainly centred their interests in the early developing Domain, with its hot water springs. The experiment was reported as "highly successful" and likely to be repeated. The cost was: first class 38 shillings return and second class 28 shillings.
1912 Te Aroha's Chamber of Commerce had a loud voice and certainly made it heard in official quarters. Records show letter exchanges with the Tourist Department which emphasise the claims of the town - "which far exceed those of Rotorua!"
1930 "Everybody looks so healthy at this gathering to mark Te Aroha's 50th year of progress, that I can't help feeling that most of you will be present at the towns Centennial in 1980." - Speaker at the town's 50th celebrations.

Te Aroha Beginnings . . .Legendary: The Tale of Aroha
Archaeologists assure us that in its primal stages the Thames Valley was once a broad gulf of the sea, separating the Maramarua foothills from the Coromandel Ranges on the east. Over the centuries, silt washed down from the low ranges at its head by the Waihou, Piako and tbe Waitoa rivers, and gradually extended the seaward boundaries, until they combined to form one of the largest swamps in the North Island. This reached to the Firth of Thames. Thus was created the vast green quagmire the Maori knew. On the whole Maori gave it a wide berth, except for eeling and flax-gathering. True there were sand-bars and fertile islands, which could be, and often were occupied, but this was a chancy business, for the winter floods frequently covered the whole area. Mangroves, pussy-willows and vast stands of raupo alone broke the watery wilderness. The traditional story of one of the argonauts of the fabled Arawa Canoe tells of Kahumata Mamoe who lived at Maketu. With two slaves he was returning from a visit to the Waikato and, in order to save the wide circuitous route around the swamp, decided to cut across. Herculean efforts finally carried them to the other side, and, almost exhausted, they flung themselves down at the very foot of Whakapipi (Bald Spur). Still completely lost in those unexplored regions, the young chief decided he and his slaves would climb to the top of the mountain to get their bearing. When they reached the highest point, there stretched before them the whole glorious vista of the East Coast with Maketu their home settlement (before the Arawa drove inland to Rotorua), nestled in its cosy green estuary. In a great surge of thankfulness and relief, Kahumata Mamoe 'takaheid' (stamped on the ground), giving the place on which he stood the name of 'Mamoe Kahumata Te Aroha' . . . . The great love of Kahumata Mamoe! That the hero of this adventure lived for long years after, is born out by the local tribes in their karakia (historic chants). It is from them that we draw our tailpiece.
From the great love of Kahumata Mamoe on the mountain-top surged the current of healing power that impregnated the warm gently water today flowing through the network of springs in the Te Aroha domain. Furthermore lovers, too, could pledge their troth with the same gentle love of the ancient Maori hero!
Mokena's PaThe original Maori Pa of Te Aroha, of which the chief was Mokena Hou, does not appear to have been the typical 'battle-pa' of the times. It apparently had no stockaded defences and arched gateway, which seemed normal in all the more celebrated pas inland and on the coast. The facts point to its comparatively recent settlement before the first Pakeha visitors arrived (Missionary, the Reverend John Morgan) probably less than three or four generations, and indicates its origin from a ancestral tribal division of the powerful Ngati Maru of the Thames coast. Had Te Aroha's site been held by a long-established and numerous tribe behind a powerful stockade and battlement, the whole story of the Te Aroha gold strike could have been different.Mokena himself must have been singularly peaceful, for there is no record of anything other than hospitality from his Ngati Rahiri. Long before the gold discovery, the first venturesome pioneers received nothing but kindness and co-operation from the grand old chief, who had been described as combining the wisdom of the Maori with an uncanny perception of progress. From a census taken in 1878 (tow years before the gold rush), figures showed that the Ngati Rahiri living at Te Aroha, a sub-tribe of the widespread Ngati-Maru, could only register 98 Maoris, made up as follows: Males (over 15 years) 49; Females (over 15 years) 32; and children (under the age of 15) 17.

May comfort be bestowed on those who are bereaved of his presence, and may they be endowed with fortitude and resignation in the hour of sorrow.
May the present instance of mortality remind us of the precepts and dictates of the Order to which we belong and draw our hearts towards Thee, our refuge in time of need! S.M.I.B.
Grand Honours are given three times and at the third time the Brethren audibly pronounce the following words-
We Cherish his memory here (hands crossed on breast); we commend his spirit to God who gave it (both hands raised to the Heavens); we consign his body to the earth (both hands pointed to the ground).

TE AROHA COELIAC/GLUTEN-FREE GROUPThe informal get-together held on Monday, 27 May at the Catholic Hall was a great success, with around twenty people dropping in to enjoy a delicious gluten-free afternoon tea while looking through an impressive display of GF products. Linda Hoggard will give a short talk on Stem Cell Nutrition. There will be a sales table, a display of interesting new products and afternoon tea. If you are on a gluten-free diet, whether for coeliac reasons or not, please come along and join us. For further details please contact Dorothy Morrissey, 07-884-6098 or Pam Waterhouse, 07-844-4449.
ROTARY CLUB OF TE AROHA INC.June is end of Rotary’s financial and working year. The first meeting for the month hosted Elstow/Waihou School finalists and their families for presentation of their essays for the Lawrence Essay Competition Cup. This cup and programme was initiated by Dr Richard Lawrence on the anniversary of his 50th year as a Rotarian. The three finalists were: Olivia Simmonds winner of the cup; Katie Harley 2nd, Kate Morris 3rd. All essays were excellent and it must have been a very difficult job to do the selection.Armindeep Singh was the guest speaker at the next meeting. She had a power point presentation of her time at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards programme. This is a young lady who will be a great leader for the future who already has her degree but is just finalizing her masters at Waikato University. Every year Rotary Te Aroha supports young people on this programme which is known for its excellence in leadership with keynote speakers on motivation and team skills. This is always held during the first holiday weeks of the university year annually.Wednesday 26 was the last meeting of the year and Tom Stephenson handed over the presidency of Rotary Te Aroha to Robin Reid. A very enjoyable social evening was held and Rotary look forward to having a lot of fun in the new year under Robin’s guidance. Our facebook page is under the name of Rotary of Te Aroha if you are curious to see more of what we are doing in our area and overseas.
