ClearStone LegalWe also welcome ClearStone Legal which is upstairs above Luscious, at 547 Te Atatu Road. The staff look after mum and dad clients and small to medium size businesses providing a range of legal solutions.

When Debra Briggs-Barron and Jane Barclay established the Firm in June 2014 they wanted to create a practice which was reflective of who they are – everyday people. The Firms’ Principal, Debra, says they deliver legal solutions which cater to the clients’ needs and are easy to understand. They offer a range of general practice services including residential and commercial property, sale and purchase of business, trust and estate planning, matrimonial and relationship property matters.

Debra was admitted to the bar in 2006 and moved to Te Atatu South in

2014 and is a mother on a one year old. Jane is a Mobile Legal Executive and until this year lived on the Peninsula for 13 years. Jane has two intermediate aged boys. (Debra and Jane)

This issue we are welcoming three businesses – one you will have seen on the main street and our two newest service providers who you may not have met yet.

G2U (Kabkun & Youngmi Kim)

Our newest $2.00 shop is G4U, with its fresh, bright colour scheme, at 556 Te Atatu Road. Husband and wife team Kabkun and Youngmi Kim opened their new shop during winter after leaving an Asian grocery shop in Lincoln Road, which they had run for six years. The Kim’s have three children – their son is at

Massey University, one daughter is at Unitec and their youngest daughter attends Massey High School. Originally from Korea, the family now lives at West Harbour and they hold the Peninsula in high regard, saying that locals have been welcoming, friendly and polite. “Very nice people,” says Youngmi.

New Zealand Home LoansJust along the hall in the same building is another of our newest services, New Zealand Home Loans. Business owner Lisa McCall has over 25 years’ experience in the financial services industry in a variety of roles. Lisa guides clients through the home loan process and helps them set goals, put together a budget and discover tools to become debt free faster.

Lisa says she is passionate about making a difference in people’s financial futures and says she loves helping people fund their dreams. Lisa has been a resident of Te Atatu South for eight years and is involved in the local business community, serving on the current Te Atatu Peninsula Business Association committee and belonging to the Venus Network and TNG (the Network Group). After decades of providing a place to be, for locals learning new skills or pursuing interests, Te Atatu Community House may be about to reinvent itself.

The well-loved house on Te Atatu Road is being reviewed by the Henderson Massey Local Board, following the opening of our new Community Centre, to explore whether it can become a social service delivery hub. In other words, offer space to service providers looking to use the house once or twice a week, to serve their community, rather than leasing their own premises.

The house which has been on its’ present site since 1977 , already houses Plunket, the food bank, a market and all sorts of groups and classes such as drivers’ license tests, first aid and language classes, craft groups, health clinics, counselling and support groups, IRD and legal advice. But house Manager Jacqui Hanson says the local board would like to ensure the Community House and the new Community Centre can complement each other, rather than compete. She says the smaller rooms at the house don’t allow for big groups and ideally it would benefit from refurbishment

and the relocation of a toilet which would open up more space. Funding comes from the Henderson Massey Local Board as well as Lotteries, the Trusts Community Foundation and COGS grants.

Jacqui says the house has character and is homely.

“People like it because it is a home away from home. Most of the time there is someone here to welcome them and help them with things“.

Because of this she says, some users are less inclined to feel intimidated. The house rates are between $10.00 and $20.00 per hour and being fully fenced, safe with easy parking, the house provides an affordable option for users.

“It’s no good us saying what the community wants here,” says Jacqui “ What does the community say it wants?”.

The board would like to hear from service providers who would like to use space in the community house. Expressions of interest are open until Thursday January 28th. Go to http://tinyurl.com/q433ohs to complete a short form. . For more information e mail [email protected]

The highly anticipated third season of the Harbourview Sculpture Trail will be on our doorstep for three weeks in March 2016, at Harbourview Peoples Park and three local artists will be showcasing their work.

The sculptures of Bridget Mintoft, One hundred sunrises (standing in sunlight); Carol Green, Viewfinders; from Te Atatu Peninsula and, Penny Howard from Te Atatu South with The Kumara Planters are among the 37 sculptures which are site specific and chosen to sit amongst the wetland site. Several works will use materials found in the area as an integral part of the sculpture.

For the upcoming event in March, ticket prices will include a complimentary trail catalogue for visitors on entry. Tickets are now on sale through iTICKET and they will make great Christmas presents.

Peninsula Arts Inc. President Holly Vaihu says “We’re including the catalogue in the ticket price this year after receiving such great feedback about it in 2014.  Having the catalogue at hand really enriched people’s experiences and their appreciation

of the artworks, so we wanted to ensure all our visitors could benefit from that deeper understanding.”

Ticket prices to the Harbourview Sculpture Trail 2016 are; Adults $15, Concessions $12, Children 5-12yrs $5, Children under 5 years free..

Children receive a complimentary activity sheet on entry (not catalogue). Large group bookings of 20 or more are encouraged to book early, and can be arranged by contacting [email protected].

Public curator tours will run every Friday and Saturday at 11am and 2pm over the exhibition period. There is no extra charge or booking required to join a public curator tour.  Private curator tours can be booked by arrangement.  Email [email protected] for private tour pricing and times.

Visit www.harbourviewsculpture.com for tickets and more details about planning your visit to the spectacular Harbourview Sculpture Trail, Te Atatu Peninsula, in March 2016.

The Fun Day enjoyed by thousands of locals for the last five years won’t be staged this summer and its future is unsure.

The event has been staged by community organisation Love to Live, which has gone into recess. Out-going Coordinator of the event Marilyn Kelly says the organisation is taking time to regroup. She says in order to carry on with the Fun Day, more people need to be involved.

“Love to Live is a community organisation and while there is great community participation we need more community involvement in the planning and organising of events and programs,” she says.

Also on hold is Biz Kids, a program encouraging local school children to become budding entrepreneurs by working with them from August through to March of the following year, when the results were showcased at the Fun Day.

Marilyn says the organisation is also reviewing how Biz Kids is run and they are looking for new ideas and opportunities. With preparation included, Biz Kids has been more or less a year-long program.

“It may be that it gets reshaped so it is easier to run,” she says. “We need board members, people who have some time and can make an investment in the community.”

In the five years the Fun Day has been running, there has been between 5,000 and 10,000 people attend on the day, depending on the weather and coinciding sporting events. More than 30 organisations have promoted their activities and there have been more than 50 volunteers involved on the day of the event alone. This includes Rutherford College students who Marilyn describes as “fantastic, amazing!”

Marilyn’s’ favourite memories include the Fun Day of March 2013 when the old community centre building was still up and everyone created a huge chalk drawing on the side of it.

“For me that day was one of the most fun and the first time we had done a big, interactive art piece and we had amazing feedback from the community.”

“The following year it rained the whole time, it was drizzling and I remember walking around and thinking why are there so many people here? It really is something special and we just have to make sure we do it the best way we can. The Fun Day needs to be owned by the community, with not just one person or one organisation doing it.”

If anyone would like to be involved with Love to Live and the future of the Fun Day, please e mail Love to Live at [email protected]

Barista and 100’s of

other Adult classesRay White shines a light on giving this festive seasonThis Christmas, Ray White will continue its popular tradition of giving with the return of a little Ray of giving. The inspiring Christmas campaign will see participating Ray White offices partner with the Ronald McDonald House to help disadvantaged children who may need a little extra light in their festive season.

Ray White asks Kiwis to embrace the giving season and dig deep for children in their community who need it most. The campaign will officially launch in Australia and New Zealand on 1 December 2015. Every year, Kiwis are asked to donate a gift for a deserving child and drop it into one of their participating Ray White offices. This gift drive is a really simple way to help put a smile on the face of children and families who may need some extra cheer at this time of year. All you need to do is wrap up your present and drop it under the tree in your local Ray White office.

Ray White Te Atatu is located at 1-3 Rhone Avenue, Te Atatu Peninsula and will have a special giving tree in their office to collect gifts for children and families who will be doing it tough this festive season. Those who wish to donate a gift you just need to inform the Ray White team if the gift is for a boy or girl, and nominate an age group. The team will

ensure the gift is delivered to a disadvantaged child and help put a smile on their face this Christmas.

It’s a really simple way to put a smile on the face of a young child who might otherwise go without this Christmas, just a small gift can make the biggest difference to families who are struggling at an expensive time of year.Ray White has run this initiative across Australia and New Zealand each December since 2012. Last year nearly 300 offices across Australia and New Zealand helped raise 15,000 gifts for disadvantaged families this Christmas.

Giving begins from the 1st of December so please pop your present into our office and one of our lovely team members will assist you in labelling and placing it under the tree.

Harbourview

Spring CleanBeach

Harbourview’s coastline got a thorough spring cleaning on Saturday, October 10, all the way from State Highway 16’s Whau River motorway bridge right up to the Harbour View Beach Reserve.

The annual event is organised by Forest & Bird’s Motu Manawa Restoration Group with support from Ecomatters Environment Trust and Auckland Council.

The brainchild of Forest & Bird’s Raewyn Michael, a Te Atatu Peninsula resident, the event has grown in size since its first outing in 2014.

This year there were over 50 volunteer participants. They came from Forest & Bird, local community group Friends of Harbourview, Rutherford College students, concerned Te Atatu Peninsula residents, and others who had seen the advertising.

Parents brought their children along for a family day out. All sorts of rubbish were hauled back to the giant bin waiting at the Harbour View Beach Reserve carpark.

Bigger items ranged from a mattress, a broken office chair and half a surfboard.

Of more importance were all the plastic wastes, especially from drink bottles. Plastic rubbish breaks down into small fragments poisonous to sea birds and marine life.

More education is needed to encourage people not to throw plastics into gutters and waterways, from where they wind up as toxic tidal trash on places like Harbourview’s coast.

By gathering up stacks of plastic waste, the spring clean volunteers helped make Harbourview safer for its rich and precious bird life.

This was especially significant in the 2015 Year of the Godwit, because godwits frequent Harbourview’s tidal foreshore and seabed when down this way on their annual round trip from Alaska.

After the clean up, volunteers enjoyed a sociable sausage sizzle at the wooden pavilion nearby Harbour View Beach Reserve.

A big thank you from Forest & Bird to all who attended and made the day such a great success.

This Te Atatu Peninsula community event will occur again in October 2016.

MicrochipsAs summer is approaching and many of us are planning holidays with our pets, or leaving them with housesitters or relations, I think microchipping is a timely subject for this column.

Microchipping is a way of permanently identifying an animal by injecting a chip about the size of a grain of rice between its shoulderblades. Microchipping became compulsory by law for the majority of dogs when they are registered for the first time, following a serious dog attack in 2006. Since then microchipping of other animals has become much more common, and now most cats are also chipped. Other species such as birds and reptiles, farm animals, and even valuable plants can also be chipped.

To explain how the system should work, the microchip itself encodes a 15 digit number. It doesn’t contain any details and isn’t a GPS. The number is read by passing a reader, which all vet clinics and animal shelters should have, over the animal’s neck and shoulder region. For the chip to be used to identify the animal and its owners the details need to have been recorded on a computer database. Confusingly there are several databases in use. Dogs have their microchip numbers, descriptions and owner details

recorded in their local council records, but councils don’t keep records of other species and their records can only be accessed by their own staff, so veterinarians and shelter personnel recommend that all pets are not only microchipped but also registered on a national database. The most widely used databases are the New Zealand Companion Animal Register and the Australian based Australasian Animal Registry.

Then when a pet who has strayed, or worse still is injured, is brought to a vet clinic by a member of the public other than the owner, the vet clinic staff can scan it, log in to the registers and search for that number. If the animal is on the searched register the owner can usually be contacted promptly. It is very frustrating when the pet is plainly owned and loved but doesn’t have a microchip, or has a chip,. yet cannot be found on any database. It is also important when recording details to supply more than one contact number, and if at all possible an alternative contact person in case you are away or unavailable when the animal is found. And remember to update your details

if they change, or if the animal is rehomed.

Most pets are microchipped at the time of their vaccinations or at desexing, but they can be done at any age. Microchips are expected to continue to read for the lifetime of the pet. Pet microchips do have other uses besides for identification. Microchip cat doors are programmed to read a microchip as the cat approaches the door, and only allow the resident cats through. There are also microchip operated pet food dispensers which can be used if members of a multipet household need different diets.

For more information or if you would like to get a pet microchipped, as always contact your local vet clinic.

A warm summer’s afternoon, with sky deep and blue, you are sitting on a comfy chair and eating delectable food and sipping a chilled glass of your favourite wine, which begins cool your body and sooth your senses. Pure pleasure for sure. They tell me we are going to have a great summer with a strong El Niño providing us with many sunny days (apologies to farmers who will have it tough this season).

Good news for wine drinkers is that we are seeing many fabulous new vintage wines coming onto the market as we count down the number of sleeps till Christmas. Daisy fresh 2015 sauvignon blanc and pinot gris are vibrant and full of tasty flavours. It was a small-cropping year (not great for the growers) with small berries and small bunches, concentrating those gorgeous flavours, resulting in wines that burst with intense juicy flavours. You can choose the more mellow 2014s or the mouth-wateringly lively 2015s. Either way they will suite light lunches and 5 o’clock drinks

brilliantly. Steamed mussels, grilled prawns, summer salads, Thai fishcakes and sushi, are all good with these refreshing whites. So many wines to choose from, but here are two that impressed me recently. Villa Maria Private Bin Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 ($11-$16) is punchy and lively with passionfruit, feijoa, lime zest and peach flavours, beautifully supported by excellent palate weight and bright acidity. Tohu Awatere Valley Pinot Gris 2015 ($19-$22) is filled with stone fruit, fresh pear, floral and a hint of spice notes, together with upfront and refreshing mouthfeel, finishing lingering and smooth.

The rise in popularity of rosé has been phenomenal, even some burly men have been seduced by this fragrant tipple. If you prefer a lighter style, go for the ones from Marlborough or Central Otago, as they are usually made from the elegant pinot noir grape. Ones from the North Island are often made using grapes such as merlot or other fuller-bodied varieties, making them richer and weightier. Both styles offer terrific

versatility when it comes to matching food – from light salads and pastas to antipasto, and even strawberries and cream. If you are having ham for Christmas lunch, consider rosé as part of the offering. The sweet glaze and the salty meat go beautifully with fruity taste of the wine, and the bright acidity of the wine cuts through the fat and flavoursome accompaniment. My two picks: Tiki Estate Pinot Noir Rosé 2015 ($19-$23) is friendly, refreshing and very approachable with fragrant aromas of stone fruit, citrus and raspberry which lead to a succulent palate that is lively and flavoursome. The wine is light on its feet while delivering plenty of fabulous flavours. Mahurangi River ‘Pretty in Pink’ Rosé 2015 ($24) from Matakana is a fuller style made predominantly from merlot. It’s generous and richly fruited displaying ripe apple, peach, floral and cranberry flavours with subtle sweetness and velvety texture.

Happy sipping.

Christmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Actually it can also be stressful, frantic and expensive.

As a child, I baked goodies for Christmas presents which were always appreciated and devoured. I think a handmade gift is very special and even more appropriate these days when people cook and bake less at home. This spice cookie originally came from Taste magazine but I have adjusted it to be Vegan (egg and dairy free). It’s easy to make (no mixer required) and the dough can be made ahead and frozen.

Spice Cookies

(Makes about 40-50 small cookies)

2& 2/3 cups self-raising flour1&1/2 tsp cinnamon1&1/2 tsp cloves1&1/2 tsp nutmeg1 tsp white pepper (optional but really yum)1/2 cup caster sugar1/2 cup soft brown sugar250g Olivani1/3 cup soy milk1/4 tsp baking soda

Sift the dry ingredients together and then rub in the Olivani until the mix resembles bread crumbs.

Combine the soy milk and baking soda together then add to the mix until a dough is formed.

Knead lightly on a floured bench, then cut in half and wrap each part in gladwrap and chill for at least 30 minutes. The dough is very soft so to make it easier you can roll it up like a long roll, wrap in baking paper and freeze it and just slice off cookies to bake. Or chill until firm, roll the dough out and cut out cookie shapes.

Bake on paper lined trays for 15- 25 minutes (it depends on their thickness).

Make a hole near the top of the cookie halfway through the cooking time to thread the ribbon through to hang them from the Christmas tree.

Leave to cool until firm then simply put two together with raspberry jam or decorate to your heart’s content (get your kids involved too). These ones have been iced with fondant circles and icicle cutouts. Merry Christmas and safe holidays.

Christmas comes around all too soon. And the great thing about it is that the holidays also begin soon after. Let’s hope it’s one of those long warm Auckland summers. Auckland is served with some wonderful beaches on the west and east coasts of this fascinating isthmus we live on.

From the Te Atatu Union Church: We wish you a happy and blessed Christmas and a restful holiday season. I want to acknowledge the other churches on the Peninsula for their service to the community of Te Atatu: The Holy Family Catholic Parish; The Chapel; the Samoan Christian Congregational Church of Samoa; the Peninsula Community Church; the Anglican Church of St Paul; Te Atatu

Baptist Church & the Te Atatu Union Church. We have all been working together for the benefit of this community.

This year the Combined Peninsula Churches have worked on three events together: A Pentecost on the Peninsula Service in June which celebrated the birthday of the Christian Church on Pentecost Day. We will hold a Carols In the Park Community Christmas Event at 6.30pm on Friday 11 December (in conjunction with the Te Atatu RSA, the Te Atatu Lions Club & some Peninsula Schools). We were also privileged to be part of the Opening Ceremonies for our new Library and Community Centre. Awesome.

Thank you to you out in this wonderful community, who have contributed to our Food Banks; our Market Days; and all the church events which enable us to provide services to the community. Without your help, we would struggle. Please remember that if you are bringing goods to any of the churches, bring things that are useable.

Our churches all have websites you can find by searching under our church names. We are open to all people of all ages from all races and cultures. Nearly all of us have Childrens’ and Youth programmes. You will find opportunities to explore the Christian Faith with others and to simply enjoy the friendship and fellowship of other people who want to make the most of their lives.

Enjoy the Christmas Season and the holidays that follow. I’m sure you’ll be hoping and praying like me, that it all goes well.

Wayne Toleafoa

Minister at the Te Atatu Union Church.

Thank You

The goal of the Te Atatu Peninsula Community Food Bank is to provide practical support and food assistance to individuals and families in need in the Te Atatu area. As a result of seeing a need in our community for emergency food assistance a small foodbank was set up at the Te Atatu Community House. Through the food bank we have been able to talk with people and discover their needs beyond emergency food. We have a team of volunteers to make up food parcels one day a week and a generous community; donations of food have flowed in when we have asked. Since the foodbank began operating from the Te Atatu Community House in early 2014 we have seen an increase in demand for food parcels. Families from all walks of life need support from time to time, whether that be food, budgeting, clothing or other advice. Through working together with CARE Waitakere

Trust’s budgeting, advocacy and counselling services, we are able to provide holistic support to those in need within the local area.Great support for the foodbank has been given by the Te Atatu Peninsula community with regular donations of food coming in alongside other offers of assistance. A number of groups, including local churches, schools, play groups and businesses are among those who donate regularly to the food bank. The surrounding community is great at pulling together, combining resources to give back and help others in need. Volunteers are always needed to help in various ways.If you would like to help in any way please contact Te Atatu Community House on 834 5827 or CARE Waitakere Trust on 834 6480. There is a range of non-perishable food collection points in the area including the Te Atatu Peninsula Community Centre, the Community House or CARE Waitakere Trust.

Meet thefernbirdA LONG-TIME RESIDENT OF

THE MOTU MANAWA POLLEN

ISLAND MARINE RESERVE

Matata or fernbirds live in dense wetland vegetation and are more often heard than seen because of their excellent camouflage and limited ability to fly. They tend to scramble through dense vegetation searching for insects.

Fernbird numbers have declined considerably due to the increasing number of wetlands being drained, so it is heartening to see their continued presence in the Causeway’s wetlands area.

Thanks to photographer Jeremy Painting for the matata image taken near Te Atatu.

The Patiki Road cycleway and pedestrian overbridge disappeared (with the help of our construction team) overnight during September and the difference can be seen in the photographs below.

Cyclists and pedestrians are being detoured around these works and onto the new permanent cycleway west of the Whau River Bridge with one cyclist commenting enthusiastically, ‘feel the quality’.

At the completion of the project, cyclists will be able to ride the length of the causeway and beyond on a new, purpose built route.

New man at the wheelThe Causeway Alliance has welcomed Mike Booth as its new Alliance Project Manager. Mike is former Project Alliance Board member and is familiar with the project and the team. Far from his native Scotland, Mike has lead construction projects in Asia and Australia as well as the completion of the award-winning Newmarket Viaduct Replacement project in 2012.

Tread lightly and leave only footprints This photo shows part of the narrow sections on either side of State Highway 16 where the Causeway Alliance team works alongside fast-moving traffic. All of the effects of the construction process must be contained within this long ribbon that passes through the Motu Manawa-Pollen Island marine reserve. Either side of this work the environment continues to flourish with rare and endangered species continuing to go about their business untouched by the work going on around them.

The Whau River Bridge stitch of its newly constructed southern side and the existing bridge went without a hitch during an overnight closure on 19 September. The stitch used 58 cubic metres of concrete which is equal to 58,000 litres.

Imagine this as single litre bottles of milk lined up on a supermarket shelf and you begin to get a feel for how much concrete was needed. The concrete reached its required strength at 7am on the Sunday morning and we were able to open two westbound lanes ahead of schedule.

Gem Awards The Causeway Alliance was a finalist in two categories of the NZ Transport Agency’s recent GEM (Going the Extra Mile) Awards: Customer Care and Protecting the Environment. The GEM Awards are how the Transport Agency recognises and celebrates its contractors and suppliers who go the extra mile for customer service and safety, and who show their commitment to its priorities and quality standards. A record number of nominations were received this year from construction projects around the country, and we’re proud to have been finalists twice over. While we didn’t bring home the winner’s glassware, our competition was strong and the winner’s awards were well deserved.

The stitch went without a hitch

Now that we’re coming into the summer season we’re going to be heading out and about more. Make it harder for potential burglars by asking your neighbours to add an extra pair of eyes and ears.

Call the police if you feel something is not right. If your instincts tell you this is the case, listen and make the call – let us let us decide if there is something to investigate. Hide or shred boxes that new Christmas presents have come in, for example don’t put the box for your new apple laptop on top of the recycling bin on the side of the road where anyone can see it. It’s advertising that you have new and expensive items inside.  The new Community Patrol is up and running and if the volunteers see anything suspicious, they will call it in for the police to handle. We will focus on who we suspect is behind this activity and it is usually one or two individuals plus the occasional opportunist who might see a laptop left on a car seat, for example. Don’t leave valuable items in clear view.

Keeping SafeWe also find with the warmer weather that there is often an increase of indecent acts, usually around walkways and sometimes schools. If you are out exercising, carry your phone with you if possible. Tell someone where you are going for your jog or walk. If possible exercise with a friend and try to change up your routine – don’t always go the same way at the same time of day.

Drinking and DrivingThe festive season should also make us

mindful of the new alcohol limits for motorists. The breath alcohol limits for adult drivers 20 years and over have reduced from 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, to 250mcg and the blood alcohol limits have reduced from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, to 50mg. If you are under 20 there is a zero limit, so don’t drink at all if you want to drive.

The Institute of Environmental Science and Research advises that most people will be able to drink two standard drinks over two hours and remain under the new drink-driving limits for adults. But keep in mind that if you have had little sleep and nothing to eat, one glass of wine might just put you over the limit, now that the limit is lower. A standard drink is equivalent to 330ml of beer, 100ml of wine or 32ml of spirits, containing 4, 13 and 40% alcohol respectively.

It’s Not O.K.

This is a stressful time of year with pressures on finances especially, which can lead to tension within the family. Take some time out if you can and if you think your friends might be going through some issues, ask them if they need help. It is not o.k. to hit your spouse. Seek help – talk to family and

talk to police as we can link families up with other key agencies. We want to help.

I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and a great summer.

Const. Michael CHAN FOUNG
