About Te Kura o Tiori - Burnham SchoolOur School is a place for partnership in learning Ka tu to tatou kura hei whakahoa te akoranga

Burnham School, Te Kura o Tiori is situated in the Selwyn District approximately 15 kilometres south of Christchurch. We have nine permanent classrooms, a school hall, library, BMX track, resource room, a whare, administration block, adventure playground, amphitheatre and a covered sandpit. Burnham School has a close relationship with the military and benefits significantly from their support.

We are a Decile 10 School with the many of our children being dependents of military personnel. We currently operate seven classes from new entrants to Year 8. Our roll is 163 with promising signs of growth. We are part of the Rolleston Kāhui Ako and participate in the Rolleston zone for school sports. Burnham School does not have an enrolment scheme and this allows out of zone children to attend. Many of our children travel from all areas and with the support of the Go Bus Company a daily service travels from Rolleston to Burnham, coinciding with the school start and finish times.

Our team consists of our Principal, Sandra Keenan, two Associate Principals, a Leader of Learning Support, class teachers, a reading recovery teacher, a teacher aides, an office manager, a cleaner and maintenance/grounds person.

The school has a motivated Board of Trustees, supportive and fun staff and an active PTA. Our community support is vital and we value their input and support. We have a strong pastoral care system and our teachers know all the children, and children look after each other.

Positive relationships are fundamental to leveraging learning for children and adults. We believe children learn best when there is mutual trust, co-operation and understanding between parents, teachers and students. Our team strive to provide children with the best possible learning experiences to meet the needs of an ever changing world. A very caring, co-operative working atmosphere exists throughout the school and children are encouraged to strive for excellence in all they undertake.

The school is well-resourced with wireless high speed internet access, desktop computers, laptops and iPads and other mobile devices. The school has two interactive white boards, and six large screen TV sets, with an apple TV to mirror what is on the teacher’s laptop. Our senior school has e-portfolios which we call ‘Burnham Ako’ for every senior student.

Our School Charter and Polices are available online www.burnham.school.nz and at the school office. Please feel free to view these at any time.

Check out our 2014 and 2017 Education Review Office report for further information about our successes!

Vision for Student Learning & Teaching Practice AgreementFollowing is our vision for student learning and agreed teaching practice statement. This was created as a result of our NZC development and has been cross-referenced with the Registered Teacher Criteria, Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. We are continually revising it to make improvements. All staff use this as they design learning in our kura.
