Tea Leaf: A Brief HistoryIn exploring the history of Tea Leaf Ironstone China, wetravel back to the days of our grandmothers—and before.Historically, Tea Leaf was considered to be any English orAmerican-produced ironstone china decorated with thetraditional Tea Leaf motif consisting of three leaves and abud in copper or gold lustre. Today’s collectors haveexpanded that definition of Tea Leaf to include all whiteironstone decorated with copper lustre or gold motifsand/or banding. Names for these Tea Leaf variant motifsinclude Teaberry, Morning Glory, Pinwheel, andCinquefoil among others. Collectors of lustre-decoratedwhite ironstone (i.e. Ceres & Laurel Wreath) and lustre-enhanced transfer-printed ironstone (i.e. Moss Rose andLustre-enhanced Flow Blue) are also welcome.
What is Tea Leaf?Beginning in the 1840’s English potters manufacturedwhite ironstone china decorated with lustre bands and/orsimple motifs, exclusively for the American market.Anthony Shaw is considered to have produced theoriginal Tea Leaf motif on his Niagara Fan and ChineseShape body styles registered in 1856. These were thefirst of over 150 body styles decorated with the Tea Leafmotif produced by dozens of English and Americanpotters. These talented potters continued to produce thisbeautiful copper lustre decorated white ironstone untilthe beginning of the 20th century. Shipped across theAtlantic in huge sailing vessels, Tea Leaf Ironstone Chinabecame the everyday tableware of Americans. Itadorned tables in town and farm homes across thecountry. Today it is used and displayed in homes andmuseums around the land.
