Amendments to the Foundation High School Program In April 2016, the SBOE approved for second reading and final adoption changes to the Foundation High School Program graduation requirements.
The amendment updates the rules to allow a course to count as part of the set of four courses for more than one endorsement.

Amendments were made to 74.13 (f)(1)
(1) Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). A student may earn a STEM endorsement by completing the requirements specified in subsection (e) of this section, including Algebra II, chemistry, and physics or Principles of Technology

Amendments to the Foundation High School Program Specific references to AP and IB courses were removed from the Foundation High School Program and endorsement course requirements and were replaced with a general reference regarding appropriate substitutions.
“AP and IB courses may be substituted as appropriate for required courses. A single AP or IB course may not count toward more than one credit required for graduation .... but may count toward both a required course and an endorsement.” [TAC §74.11(h)]

Foundation High School Program Chapter 74.12(3) Science-three credits. One credit must consist of Biology or an AP or IB biology course in accordance with §74.11(h) of this title.
(A) One credit must be selected from the following laboratory-based courses:
(i) Integrated Physics and Chemistry;
(ii) Chemistry;
(iii) Physics;
(iv) Principles of Technology; and
(v) an AP or IB science course in accordance with §74.11(h) of this title.

Revisions to Science TEKS Subchapter D, Other Science Courses The SBOE approved for second reading and final adoption revisions to 19 TAC, Chapter 112. The revisions
• modify the amount of credit that could be earned for these courses,
• modify prerequisites for AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2, and
• add new AP physics courses to align with courses recently revised by the College Board.

One representative from each TEKS streamlining committee will provide invited testimony regarding first draft recommendations prior to the SBOE discussion of the proposed rule amendments.
SBOE members will provide additional guidance and direction to committees before they prepare final recommendations.

2017 PAEMST Competition• The nomination and application windows are now open for the
2017 competition.
• Teachers who teach grades 7 - 12 can apply (including AP Computer Science teachers).
• In Texas, eligible teachers who submit a completed application by the deadline on May 1, 2017 will earn 25 hours of CPE credit.
*Note: AP Computer Science teachers may apply under mathematics. High school teachers who teach a Career and Technical Education (CTE) or a Technology Applications course that can satisfy a mathematics or science graduation credit may apply under the appropriate category.
