DESCRIPTION
This institutional credit program is designed for professionals with non-education bachelor’s degrees to help them transition into teaching careers through competency-based coursework, portfolios, and field observation. This teacher certification program consists of seven classroom courses and two field experience courses. The required courses provide the student with a baseline of knowledge in educational theory, effective teaching strategies, classroom management and instructional technology. Teacher Certification Program
How TCP prepares educatorsPalm Beach State’s Teacher Certification Program is authorized by the
Florida Department of Education as an Educator Preparation Institute
to provide an alternate route to professional teacher certification.
TCP adheres to Florida’s core standards for effective educators. These
standards, known as Florida Educator Accomplished Practices or FEAPs,
define the statewide expectations for quality instruction and
professional responsibility.
As a TCP student, you’ll complete coursework as well as a portfolio
demonstrating FEAP competencies. The program consists of seven
required classroom courses and two required field experience courses.
These requirements provide you with a baseline of knowledge in
educational theory, effective teaching strategies, classroom management
and instructional technology. Teaching demonstrations and passing
scores on the Florida
Teacher Certification
Exams (FTCE) are also
program completion
requirements. Students
may take additional
credit and noncredit
elective courses to
further enhance their
teaching skills.
Most students complete the program in one year, which is typically
three semesters of evening and Saturday classes. Graduates who meet
all requirements may then apply for their state teacher certification
through the Florida Department of Education.
Meet the entrance requirements.You’ll be eligible to apply to the program if you have
• received a non-education bachelor’s degree
(or higher) from a regionally accredited college
or university;
• earned a minimum 2.5 grade point average in
your degree(s);
• attended an information session for the
Teacher Certification Program;
• been issued a valid statement of eligibility or a
Temporary Certificate from the Florida Department
of Education;
• completed Palm Beach State College and program
applications.
Complete the program.Successful graduates must
• complete all program coursework with a minimum
2.5 GPA;
• demonstrate teaching skills in classroom settings;
• submit an approved competency portfolio;
• pass all three portions of the Florida Teacher
Certification Exams:
• General Knowledge Test
• specific Subject Area Exam(s)
• Professional Education Test.
Apply for your Florida ProfessionalCertificate.TCP graduates who have met all program requirements
are eligible to apply to the Florida Department of
Education for their state teacher certification, known as
the Florida Professional Certificate. Employment
opportunities include working as a certified teacher in a
public, charter or private K-12 school.
