Page 1 of 2 West Las Vegas Head Start Job Description PROFESSIONAL STAFF POSITION DESCRIPTION TEACHER FUNCTION: The Teacher creates, maintains and manages an attractive, warm, and challenging learning environment for young children, incorporating developmentally appropriate learning activities which meet the needs of the group as well as those of individual children. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS (include organizational chart): This position reports to the Case Load Coordinator and adheres to all Personnel Policies & Procedures. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Implements the program curriculum and the Head Start performance standards for classrooms. Prepares developmentally appropriate daily lesson plans in advance, which include: multicultural educational materials and activities; both classroom and playground activities; family style dining at meals and snacks as per HSPS and program policy and procedure; and, individualized activities that are recorded in the lesson plans. Documents volunteer activities and parent input in the lesson plans. Bending, kneeling and sitting on the floor at children’s eye level. (Regulation #1304.52 (j)(1)) Examples: Developing Lesson Plans Developing “Individual Learning Plans” Implementation of IEP as it pertains to the classroom setting Developing writing skills during table top activities. Assisting children during toileting and self-help skills. Examples: Help children manipulate snaps, buttons, zippers, etc. assist with tooth brushing, general hygiene and when interacting with children while at outdoor play. Assist children on and off playground equipment. Participating in (PE) Physical Education Teacher is required to run, jump, hop, and assist with physical activities. Teacher is also required to be able to lift a minimum of 25 to 35 pounds. Examples: If a child is hurt and needs to be taken away from a danger zone. If a child needs to be assisted on/off the bus in an emergency and or daily activities. During toileting time, when a child needs assistance in the area of toileting skills. Assisting children on and off playground equipment. Teacher organizes the classroom in well-developed and defined learning centers, rotating materials routinely to create a stimulating learning environment for young children. The Teacher maintains a classroom that is clean, safe and free of clutter, with learning materials labeled and organized to make them easily accessible for use by the children. The Teacher ensures that all posted materials are complete as to the required time schedules. Teacher reports to the Case Load Coordinator when absent and must find the necessary coverage for the classroom. • Individual learning plans • Initial Family Partnership agreement • Medical Forms (Completion and Familiarity with pertinent medical information) • Conducts two (2) home visits per class load • Conducts two (2) parent conferences with each child’s family per year, according to the program calendar • Track and report in-kind contributions • PROMIS (input of data) • CLASS requirements • Performance Standards • Federal Protocols (Audit) • Other duties as assigned

Continues professional growth by participating in Education, training programs and workshops/conferences, as the budget allows. Reports to work at scheduled times and maintains good attendance. Performs all duties assigned in a timely and professional manner. Transportation of children at times may be required in a school vehicle.

• This requires that you must have a current drivers license • Clear driving record • A minimum of 16 hours of annual training provided by the West Las Vegas Head Start

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Elementary Education with an emphasis in early childhood; and minimum three (3) years successful experience in a preschool classroom. Excellent interpersonal, nurturing, and problem solving skills required. Clarification:

No. The Head Start Act does not provide for exemptions or grandfathering of teachers who are already teaching in Head Start. The purpose of the mandate is to ensure that each teacher is qualified and can provide experiences of consistently high quality education for children.

By October 1, 2011, each preschool Head Start classroom in center-based programs must have a teacher who has at least one of the following:

• An associate, baccalaureate, or advanced degree in early childhood education

What are the current requirements for Head Start teacher qualifications?

• A baccalaureate or advanced degree in any field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education with experience teaching preschool-age children or;

• A baccalaureate degree in any field and has been admitted into the Teach For America program, passed a rigorous early childhood content exam, such as the Praxis II, participated in a Teach For America summer training institute that includes teaching preschool children, and is receiving ongoing professional development and support from Teach For America’s professional staff.
