“100% of our students will have language issues in mathematics! Math is essentially a second language for all of our students. Math vocabulary and symbolism is critical in the understanding of mathematical concepts. To communicate mathematically, students must be able to use clear

definitions in discussion with others and in their own reasoning. ---CCSS (Mathematical Practice #6 - Attend to Precision) o This year both grades 7 and 8 have a focus on vocabulary and writing in math. o ALL students have a vocabulary booklet where they define, illustrate and write about the vocabulary associated with the math concept of the lesson.

o In addition to the vocabulary booklet, each student in grade 7 has a math journal for guided writing and reflection. o Grade 8 students have a writing and reflection section in their vocabulary booklets.
