Literacy for BoysLiteracy for Boys
This free resource from www.teacher-timesaver focuses upon
encouraging boys who are reluctant readers or writers by tappinginto a well documented interest in writing for a purpose. By
getting boys to look at what is often a preferred reading format -
the comic or magazine and allowing them to work individually
with a partner or a small group to produce a comic/magazine
about a subject of their choice, this mini- topic should help engage
their interest in both reading and writing. Templates to get you
started are provided - written in Microsoft Word these can easily
be adapted and given new titles. A planning sheet is provided for
the boys to get to grips with producing their magazine. Lots of
previous work looking at comics and magazine formats can be
done in cross -curricular ways and extension ideas are provided. If
you want to go the whole hog you could even fundraise by selling
the magazine to unsuspecting parents !!
I have added a list of books relating to developing literacy skills in
boys and some suggested books you may or may not have come
across before.
I hope you enjoy the resource.
Kind regards

Captain Underpants Three Pant-tastic Novels in One (Captain Underpants S.)
(Paperback)
by Dav Pilkey
Fantastic Books, 26 Oct 2005
Reviewer: A reader
We have only recently discovered the Captain Underpants books and they are now my
sons (aged 7) firm favourites. Not only are they are very funny, but they have inspired my
son to write his own comic strip. The books are also helping motivate him to read on his
own - he can't wait until he can read them secretly, after bedtime. We regularly have to re-read the books (we have had to buy all of them, because they are so good) and they still
make us laugh. Very young boys humour, but never-the-less very entertaining.
