CARLABRAZIL

At Bell, I found a really deep cultural learning environment which made me excited to go back to work and put it all into practice! As teachers, we have to keep learning so we can engage our students and teach more effectively.

OUR LOCATIONS Cambridge is one of the most famous cities for learning in the world. Bell Teacher Campus is held in the beautiful Homerton College, a University of Cambridge college. ADAPTING LEARNING TO EACH INDIVIDUALBell trainers find out about each teacher’s ambitions and capability, and build from there. We are experts in working with teachers of different needs and cultures and offer different levels of challenge to each, based on their needs, goals and context. We run programmes for teachers of every age and stage of experience and frequently welcome back returners on the next step of their journey.

LEARNING THE BELL WAYOur experts and an Emeritus Professor from the University of Cambridge developed The Bell Way, our unique teaching approach. The six principles below are core to everything we do and will ensure your success, and the success of your students.

MAKING OUTSTANDING THE NORMBell trainers create high expectations and engagement. We challenge each teacher we teach to perform beyond their expectations, enabling them to excel. We expect our teachers and trainers to be the best in their field. We provide regular feedback and development opportunities and film the best lessons to share and inspire others.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS

SHARING CLEAR LEARNING AIMS AND OUTCOMESBell trainers have clear, consistent learning goals and teaching methods. We make the aims of each session and activity clear in a way that inspires and engages teachers, and measure progress against these aims. We monitor quality through our own standardised, teaching observation system, designed by Bell’s team of experts and praised by educational inspectors.

CLARITY OF LEARNING

OLGA KAZAKHSTAN

I really enjoy the quality of education at Bell, that’s why I keep coming back. My first course was CELTA, the second was Contemporary English and the third one is CLIL. The next one will be Becoming a Teacher Trainer.

KARINEGUADELOUPE

The courses at Bell and the opportunities to meet so many people are really rejuvenating for the mind. There’s so much choice — cultural talks, social outings — and I particularly enjoyed the plenary session on pronunciation and the workshop on how the English speak.

LEARNING EVERYWHERE

HELPING TEACHERS TO LEARN EVERYWHEREBell trainers maximise formal and informal learning opportunities. We provide a range of social and cultural activities to help teachers develop their learning outside the classroom. We help teachers develop their skills through the use of well-stocked learning centres, learning technology and regular self-study assignments.

USING FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE TEACHING AND LEARNINGBell trainers use assessment and feedback to help teachers develop their individual skills. We help teachers assess their own work and show them what they have to do to take their teaching to the next level. Reflection by teachers on their own practice is a key component of all our teacher training programmes.

BELIEVING IN THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATIONBell teacher trainers continuously refresh and renew their professional skills to support effective learning and teaching. Bell’s 2015 report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate praised our “culture of continuous improvement”. We have considerable experience in Action Research and a research partnership with the University of Warwick. Many of our trainers are conference speakers, researchers, webinar presenters and published authors.

THIS COURSE IS FOR:

People who want to start their career as an English language teacher and have the opportunity to teach anywhere in the world. You may be a new graduate, you may want to change your existing career or you may want to travel.

This course is also suitable for those with some teaching experience who do not yet hold the CELTA qualification.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is the most highly-regarded and widely-recognised initial qualification for English language teachers globally. The CELTA is accredited by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge.

CELTA is a four-week assessed course which focuses on practical skills, introducing you to hands-on teaching experience straight away.

This highly intensive, practical course includes:

●● Practical workshops and seminars: there are 120 contact hours in the course including workshops and seminars which focus on language awareness, phonology, language learning, teaching methodology and professional development.

●● Teaching practice and feedback: you will teach six hours of classes attended by volunteer adult learners of English. In a feedback session you will discuss the lessons taught and receive individual verbal and written feedback from tutors.

●● Observation: you will observe a minimum of six hours of classes of experienced teachers (this may include two hours of audio material).

●● Lesson preparation: lesson preparation is initially supervised by the course tutors, but you are encouraged to work more independently as the course progresses. By the end of the course you should have a basic toolkit which allows you to teach effectively in an EFL classroom.

REAL TEACHING EXPERIENCE

CELTA is taught in our schools, so you will become immersed in a real teaching environment. Teaching practice takes place in our classrooms, with enthusiastic people from the local community that want to improve their English (Bell offers all lessons with trainee teachers free of charge to students).

All teaching and learning resources for the course are provided, including stationery for teaching practice and books for your written assignments from the Learning Centre. You will also have access to photocopiers, computers, and printers, and will be given training in how to use interactive whiteboards. You will have access to a wide range of facilities at our schools, including a dedicated CELTA classroom.

Back in Argentina I am a primary school teacher and I want to progress my career to teach English too. One of my friends recommended I come to Bell – she said it was the best place to study for the CELTA! The teachers are really helpful and give lots of advice on how to improve. I’m enjoying learning in a group as we all help each other and learn from one another.

PHILFRANCE

I think it is important to study a full-time course, so you are immersed in the learning. I used to be a teacher in France and I had never been taught how to teach. No-one other than students came into my classroom. It’s scary to be watched, but it’s how you really learn to teach. The course is a rare opportunity to see teaching, analyse teaching, and be critiqued on your own teaching.

I really thought this course was fantastic. I have learnt so much, the tutors were brilliant at guiding, being positive and constructively feeding back. Having done a PGCE and taught in a secondary school for six years, I can honestly say that this has been the best teacher training I have done.

POOM THAILAND

I have improved my teaching skills in two weeks. I have learnt how to correct errors in a better way for the student and have learnt how to introduce activities in the classroom. I think Bell is special because it is so well-organised, with special staff and the courses cover everything. When I get back to Thailand I will make activities for students and be able to talk about British culture from direct experience.

GROUP EXPERIENCE: TRAINEE TEACHERS FROM THAILAND 19 trainee teachers from Udon Thani Rajabhat University in Thailand, with two group leaders, visited Bell Cambridge for a teacher training programme designed especially for them. The programme shared Bell teacher techniques and the teachers experienced activities and trips that would allow them to talk to their own students about British culture.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

●● To give the teachers greater confidence when teaching

●● To introduce the teachers to a wide variety of teaching techniques, including: classroom management, researching language for classroom use, teaching grammar effectively, teaching vocabulary, lesson planning, using film and technology, dealing with error, evaluating materials, syllabus planning, presentation into practice and observations of experienced teachers.

When you are in a group, you can learn together and share ideas. You learn good teaching habits altogether. During our two week stay, we have visited Windsor, which was amazing, Canterbury, and went punting in Cambridge, which is relaxing and you can learn the history.

The course is an exciting programme which develops students’ language skills through themed project work, study tours and a range of sports and activities. Roxy first brought a class in 2016, returned in January 2017, and is already planning the 2018 programme with the groups team.

ROXYTEACHER FROM ARGENTINA

We like bringing our students to the UK as they get to explore England, be in contact with native English speakers and connect with children from different countries. At Bell, the students are challenged. They gain lots of new skills such as independence and take part in fun activities including archery and cooking and are exposed to British accents, which helps their pronunciation. We are immersed in an English environment, learning the language through projects and study tours, which is very entertaining and wonderful for us as a method of learning. I’m very happy and I hope to keep coming here for many years.

IN 2016 WE DESIGNED COURSES FOR

78 GROUPSAND WELCOMED STUDENTS FROM

19 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

FRANK BELL

OUR BELL STORYWe continue to follow the vision of our founder Frank Bell, a University of Cambridge graduate, who believed in the power of language to change lives and transform the world.

Frank started a ‘secret university’ teaching languages during his time as a prisoner of war in World War II and became convinced that the route to international cooperation lay in learning.

He opened the first Bell language school in Cambridge in 1955.

Our heritage means we have always had education at the heart of everything we do and in over 60 years, we have never compromised on that.

JOLANDA THE NETHERLANDS

I took up my dream to build up my own company and teaching English is the core of that business. To be taken seriously, I need my CELTA. It is incredibly intensive, but it is so much fun being all together in a classroom. We support each other. The teachers are very open, responsive and enthusiastic. You pick up a lot of things just by being here. You are like a sponge, soaking up the good teaching.

Since our first school opened in 1955, we’ve created success stories for over a million people. We’d love to hear about your Bell experience too!

TARSILA BRAZIL

My teaching skills definitely improved with CELTA. Once you get inside the classroom you get a taste for it and you get lost in the moment. The school has been amazing and the facilities are really good. The staff are great — there’s a really friendly vibe and everyone is lovely to one another.
