SAVING WESTERN CIVILIZATION ONE STUDENT AT A TIME

  • 1

    Greek 1 Highlands Latin School

Course Description The goal of this course is for students to grow in virtue and conformity to the image of Christ as they persevere each week through the difficulties of learning a new language. Students will take their first steps toward learning to read Greek and experience the New Testament in the language in which it was first written. Each week students will focus on memorizing vocabulary, paradigms, and translating from both Greek to English and English to Greek.

Textbook N. Clayton Croy, A Primer of Biblical Greek (Eerdmans, 1999).Elizabeth Pierce, Greek 1 Workbook.

Binder Requirement Students should have a 3-ring binder organized in the following way:

All assessments are listed on the course schedule below.

Method of Course Start of class time – assessments & recitation Most Greek classes will begin with an assessment, whether a short quiz or a test, followed by a review of the assessment material once all students are finished. Students will normally take two quizzes per week and two tests per trimester (see the schedule below). After the assessment, or on days when we do not have an assessment, we will start class by reciting paradigms together. I will also review previously covered material by asking the students questions concerning vocabulary and grammar.

Focus of class time – lecture & translation We follow the quiz/review time with a grammar lecture covering the topic of the week. We will cover some lessons in one week, others over the course of two weeks. After the lecture, we will do translation exercises together, giving students the opportunity to put into practice the principles of the lecture.

The students’ focus – vocab, paradigms, translation For every lessons students must master three things: vocabulary, paradigms, and how each grammatical concept relates to English translation. Students will make flashcards for the vocabulary words in each lesson. These flashcards must be done on actual notecards (not scraps of notebook paper). Students are allowed to cut their 3x5 notecard in half — some prefer the portability of smaller cards. We will recite and write each new paradigm we learn many times together in class, and students should do the same at home. Translation skills will be developed through practice in class and through homework assignments on the weekend.

The Goal – Christ-like character My hope for each student is that they fall in love with the Greek language and begin the journey towards reading through the Greek New Testament before they graduate high school. The goal of this class, however, is for your student to grow in virtue and conformity to the image of Christ as they persevere each week, with my help, through the difficulties of learning a new language.

An adjective modifies or describes a noun or pronoun, and must agree with it in gender, number, and case. It does so by declining in all three genders:

In the masculine and neuter, it has regular 2nd declension masculine and neuter endings. In the feminine, if the stem ends in ρ, ι, or ε (PIe), the singular case endings will follow the pure α pattern. Otherwise, the feminine has pure η endings. (Adjectives cannot have mixed endings.)

In the lexical entry, the adjective is given in its nominative singular masculine form, followed by the feminine and neuter nominative singular endings. the feminine ending (-α or -η) will indicate the feminine declension (pure α or pure η).

In Greek, there are different ways of ordering the definite article, adjective, and noun.1. Attributive Position2. Predicate Position3. Substantive Position

In the Attributive position, the adjective modifies a noun directly and occurs in two word orders.1. article + adjective + noun

ὁ ἀγαθὸς ἄνθρωπος the good man2. article + noun + article + adjective

ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ ἀγαθός the good man [lit. "the man, the good"]Notice that in each word order there is an article directly before the adjective. the Attributive position can be identified by AAA: Article + Adjective = Attributive.

In the predicate position, the adjective modifies the noun indirectly by acting as a predicate adjective. In the predicate position, the adjective is never preceded by an article.

    1. article + noun + adjective ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἀγαθός the man (is) good

    2. adjective + article + noun ἀγαθὸς ὁ ἄνθρωπος the man (is) good [lit. "good the man"]

the to be verb is often omitted, as in the above examples, but is sometimes included, e.g., ὁ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν ἀγαθός.

In the Substantive position, the adjective alone functions as a noun. An english example is the righteous. the word righteous is an adjective functioning as a noun.

    1. article + adjective οἱ ἀγαθοί the good (men) or the good (things)

    2. adjective ἀγαθός the good or the good (man) [Notice the is included in translation.]

the gender and number of the adjective will help determine the translation. In the first example above, the adjective is masculine plural, hence the translation men or things. In the second example, the adjective is accusative singular, hence the translation man.

Word Study. A postpositive cannot stand first in a sentence or clause. The English equivalents, however, may be first.

Οἱ γὰρ ἄνθρωποι λέγουσι. For the men speak.

note: γάρ is a conjunction, not a preposition.

Καλῶς νικῶντες σωζώμεθα is another saying from Xenophon’s Anabasis. the Anabasis is often the first text read by Greek students, just as Caesar’s De Bello Gallico is often the first text read by Latin students. Xenophon wrote other works too, including several about Socrates.
