SPECIAL ASSEMBLY ON WORLD OZONE DAY

‘A Healthy Atmosphere – The Future We Want’. The International Day for the preservation of the ozone layer is observed on 16th November every year since 1995. This date has been chosen by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution to remember the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987.

One of the most serious problems that the world faces today is the depletion of the Ozone layer. The Ozone layer a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun thus helping to preserve life on the planet. As such, it is paramount that we protect the Ozone layer from harmful substances such as HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons) and powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to the thinning of the Ozone layer.

At Vidya Vikas Academy, students of class 9B celebrated ‘The World Ozone Day’ on 16th of September with the view of creating awareness and sensitizing the students on the importance of the Ozone layer.

Ciantha Afonso and Dona chatterjee highlighted the importance of the day and the role of students in contributing towards protecting and preventing the ozone layer from depletion. Anushka Mitra gave a short speech on the ozone layer and mentioned what people all around the world need to do to protect it. Class 9B boys presented a skit, in which the simple ways of protecting the ozone layer were depicted. Finally, the program was winded up with a song ‘Heal the World’. Each one of us is responsible to protect our environment. We need to make the politicians too aware of their responsibilities to implement policies to protect the ozone layer. “Any long trip begins with a first step” be part of our everyday life in creating a sustainable earth.
