Story: “The Deepest Darkest Forest”OnceuponatimeJackandJillfoundanold-fashionedphonebooth .Inthedaysbeforecellphones,ifyouwantedtomakeatelephonecallyouhadtofindaphonebooth .Inthosedaysaphoneboothwasjustatallskinnybox,likethat,thathaddoorsonit .Thedoorskindoffoldedopen,kindofopenedinaweirdway .Onthebackwallwasablacktalltelephone .Andyoucouldputtencentsintoitandmakeaphonecall .Andithadahandsetontheside,andcurlycordslikethat .Andatthebottom,yourchangewouldcomeoutifyouputintoomuchmoney .Andtheymadesoundswhenyouputinthemoney .Itwouldgoding!whenthemoneywentin .Andthenyou’dhearadialtone .Andinordertodialit,youhadtoputyourfingerinaholeandtwistaknobandgozhoop-click-click-click-click-click-click-click,zhoop-click-click-click-click-click-click-click,zhoop-click-click-click-click-click-click-click .

Well,JackandJillfoundoneofthesethings,andtheysaid,“Wow,lookatthat!Thatmustbefiftyyearsold .”There’sJack .Andlet’sputJillinside .Theysaid,“Let’stryitoutandseeifitworks .”SoJill’stryingoutthetelephone .Andsheputssomemoneyintoit,anditwentka-chinggg!Andthensmokestartedcomingoutofthephone,andthelightsstartedtoblinkonandoff,andsheputituptoherear,anditsaid,“Thisisyourmission,shouldyouchoosetoacceptit .Ifyoudon’tchoosetoacceptit,you’llimmediatelybekilled .”AndJillsaid,“Oh,okay,weaccept .”Anditsaid,“Now,allyouhavetodoisgointothedeepest,darkestforestwhereevilcreatureslive,flyingmonkeys,andthingsthatcrawlupyourlegandbiterealhard .Andfindthetreasure,andbringitback .Ifyoubringitbacksuccessfully,thenyouwillsavetheworld .Ifyoufail,thenEvilMisterFredwilltakeoverandtheworldwillbedestroyed .”Jillsaid,“Cool .We’lldoit .”Anditsaid,“Okay,yournextinstructionswillcomewhenyouleastexpectthem .”Click .Andthephoneboothwentpoof!anddisappeared,leavingJillstandingoutinthemiddleofanemptyplacewithherhandbyherhead .

Jacksaid,“Well,howarewegoingtogetdownthere?”AndJillsaid,“Well,there’satrail,butthat’snofun .”Jacksaid,“You’reright .Thatisnofun .”Andtheylookeddownatthebottom,andtherewasaglassofwaterdownthere .Theysaid,“Look--waydownthereatthebottom .There’saglassofwater .”Jacksaid,“Cool!”Heranovertotheedge,rightaboveit,anddovein .“Ahhhhhhhhh”--ploosh!ThisisJack’sfeetstickingoutthere .Hepriedhimselfoutoftheglassofwaterandhesaid,“Yeah,itworked!Yourturn .”SoJilldovedown--ploosh!

SotheystartedrunningallovertheplacelookingfortheX .Butit’sdark,andit’sablackX,andthey’rehavingproblemstryingtofindtheX .Notonlythat,there’sholesintheground,there’sholesinthewalls,there’scaveseverywhere,andthere’svicioussmellycreatures .Thereareflyingmonkeys,diaboli-calflyingmonkeyswithbigears .Thereareskunks .Whatotherkindsofdiabolicalcreatureswouldyouexpecttofindinthedeepestdarkestforest .[Students shout ideas.]Wildunderpants!Okay,there’swildunderpants .Wildunderpantswithteeth,andeyes .There .Whatotherkindofcrazycreature?Poisonoustoilets!Okay,there’sapoisontoilet .Itprobablysmellsbad,sothosearebadsmelllines .Withfeet,likethat .Aminotaur!Oh,halfbull,halfman .Man’slegs,abulltorsoandhead,andtheyhaveearsthatflopdownatthesides .Onemorecreature .[Student: A skunk castle.]Askunkcastle .Wehaveaskunk .Hecanhoparoundonacastle .

Now,EvilMisterFredisdowntherewithhisminions .Andhisminionsareallrunningaroundwithbaseballbats .Minionscan’tuseswords,theycan’tusearrows,theycan’tuseknivesbecausetheykilleachother .AndthenEvilMisterFredhastogluethembacktogetheragain .Theycanonlyusebaseballbatsbecausetheirheadsarehardasarock .Youcanhitthemalldaylong,anditwon’thurtthemifyouhitthemonthehead .

SoEvilMisterFred,he’shidinghereinthiscave .[Student: I thought he lives in a castle.]Well,hiscastle’sinsidethecave .Andtheminionsarerunningaround,they’renottryingtostopJackandJill .They’retryingtosneakaroundandfollowthembecauseEvilMisterFreddoesn’tknowwherethetreasureis,andheknowsJackandJillaregoingtofindit .Whentheydo,he’sjustgoingtohavehisminionsbonkthemonthehead,stealallthetreasure,takeovertheworld,andthingswillbeevil,justthewayhelikesthem .

SoJackandJillareinthere,andastormcomesover,themoonisblockedout,it’sadarkandstormynight,andashotrangout .Oneoftheminionslitafirecracker .AndJackandJillhavetofindtheirwaytofindtheXmarksthespot .IfyouwereJackandJill,andyouweredownthere,howwouldyoufindthespot?

There’sapan .I’mgoingtotiltmineupsoyoucanseeit .Andyou’llhaveafireextinguisher,whichisacupfullofwater .Andyourpanisgoingtobelayingflat,butI’mgoingtotiltthisoneupsoyoucanseeit .We’regoingtotestsomepiecesofpapertoseehowtheyburn .Now,I’mgoingtouseamatch .Andwe’regoingtolightthepaperonfireatthetopcorners,likeears .Sohe’sgotears,andyouputthematchinthewater .Andseehowthepaperburns,seehowfaritgoes .Isitgoingtoburnallthewayorwillitgooutbeforeitburnsalltheway?

Whileyou’redoingtheexperiment,don’tblowonyourpieceofpaper .Becauseifyoublowonit,somepeoplewanttomaketheflameburnbetterorwhatever,andtheygo[blows hard].Andthepapergoes[pantomimes paper swirling through the air and landing on his head].

Duringtheexperiment,youdon’tgettoaddanyotheritemstotheburningpaper .Soifyouhaveagal-lonofgasolineinyourbackpocket,youdon’tgettoputitontheburningpaper .Ifyou’vegotahundreddollarbillthatyourparentsgaveyouforyourbirthday,youdon’tgettoputitontheburningpaper .

Experiment: Burning Chemically Treated Papers

[Instructor works with each student in turn, assisting them if necessary in lighting the match or lighter. Student then lights two corners of the paper towel piece and watches to see how it burns. It burns slowly and completely, leaving a small clump of ash.]
