WW2 Aircra f t Crash Sites at Sea

In this lesson , w e are going to become marine archaeologists .

What do you think an archaeologist is or what do you think an archaeologist does ?

An archaeologist is someone who wants to kno wone thing w hat li f e was like f or people in the past .

Marine archaeologists study anything that is in

the water that can teach them about people in the past , or anything that can teach them about ho w people have used water in the past .

Marine archaeologists are probably best kno wn f or diving on ship wrecks , but they also study rivers , lakes , ports , harbours , beaches , bridges anything that can teach them about people and water in the past .

They have some very clever methods o f

investigating archaeology under water . As well as diving , they go wading in shallo w w ater or walking on the beach to study archaeology (if you have a hi-vis coat, a hard hat and wellies or waders, dress a pupil up to demonstrate this) .

They also work with other people who use the water , such as f isherman and marine aggregate dredgers , and they do something called geophysical survey , or geophys . G eophys is a hi-tech system which uses sound waves to map

the sea f loor . Look at the pictures that were made using geophysical survey .

These pictures sho w di ff erent types o f archaeology on the seabed can you work out what they are ?

    1. WW2 B omber - thought currently to be a German Dornier , w hich is lying upside do wn with its bomb doors open . This was f ound o ff the Kent coast .

    2. A1 submarine - sunk whilst on auto-pilot in 1911. The submarine is currently lying in Bracklesham Bay , West Sussex .

    3. The Talis - a ship carrying coal that was involved in a collision in 1906. The damage to the rear o f the ship is clear in this picture .The wreck lies to the south-east o f Beachy Head in East Sussex .

Archaeologists use all the clues available to them

to try and learn about people in the past .

Look at this picture o f a submerged aircra f t it was made using geophysical survey techni q ues .Be f ore this survey no one kne w w here this plane was . D espite WW2 being relatively recent , records o f plane losses were poorly kept and are very incomplete . The German record is particularly poor as a lot o f records were destroyed at the end o f the war . When a crash site was recorded the in f ormation is sometimes very vague (e .g . 3miles south o f S ussex ).

The plane is currently thought to be a German Dornier , w hich is a bomber . Wessex

Archaeology 's Coastal and Marine team are investigating the aircra f t to learn more about it .

This picture sho ws a 2D image o f a 3D plane .Ask you class to model the plane using plasticine or clay . S ee ho w accurate they can be .

Archaeology is the study o f ho w people have lived in the past . This activity is designed to encourage your pupils to f ocus on the people who f le w WW2 planes and to give them an understanding o f the danger that airmen f aced .Ask the class to label the f ollo wing important parts o f the uni f orm:

    Flying helmet

    Escape scar f

    Kni f e

    Map pocket

    Gloves

    First Aid kit

    Talk as a class about some o f the important f eatures o f the uni f orm .

Ask the class to ans wer the f ollo wing q uestions (Teachers Notes included ):

Why does the airman have a kni f e buttoned into a pocket on his leg ? What might it have been used f or ? Why is it secured with a button and held by a piece o f string ?

What is in the white packet ? Why was it important to have one o f these and why was it stored in a pocket ? This example has not been opened and it

was made during the WW2. I t contains pills and an in j ection o f morphine - do you think they are still sa f e to use ?

Study the gloves . What makes them di ff erent f rom normal gloves ? Why do you think they were made in this way ?

The pilot would have worn a leather and sheepskin f lying jacket over his suit . Why do you think it was made o f these materials ?

What would the clear plastic pocket on his upper leg have been used f or ?

Study the silk scar f w hat does the design on it sho w? Think about why it is decorated in this way . Why do you think airmen had these and wore them around their necks ?

Look at the f lying helmet . The mouthpiece has a microphone in it and the hat has headphones

built in . A wire f rom the back o f the hat plugs into the chair to connect them . Why do you think airmen needed headphones and a microphone ?

WW2 Aircra f t Crash Sites at Sea

    Kni f e -The kni f e was intended

to be used f or cutting parachute strings (not stabbing someone , cutting up sand wiches etc .!) If an airman had to bail out o f the plane they would either end up over the land or over the

sea . O n land there are many ha z ards that may snag the 'chute and suspend the pilot and at sea the 'chute would q uickly f ill with water , dragging the airman under . The kni f e is sa f ely secured

with string and a stud to prevent it being misplaced , lost or removed f rom the suit . E ven if our airman had been using it to cut sand wiches at the moment when the plane became endangered , it would still have been with him as he leapt out o f the plane .

First Aid Kit -The white packet contains a f irst aid kit and is al ways stored in the pocket o f the

    f lying suit . I t contains a f e wdressings , a syringe o f morphine and some medicines . The contents

are likely to be dangerous having been made so long ago .

Gloves -The gloves are like mittens ,with the exception that the index f inger , as well as the

thumb , is separate . The airman needs his thumb and f inger f ree to operate the controls o f the plane .

Ho wever , the other f ingers are covered like mittens f or t wo reasons: partly as the material is so thick that it is easier to make and wear them like this and because mittens are warmer than gloves . I t was very cold in WW2 planes and the airman would have needed to keep his hands warm .

Jacket -WW2 planes were unpressurised and temperature

drops as you go higher . D emonstrate this by asking the class if anyone has noticed this whilst ,f or example , standing on high ground , a hill etc .Modern jets are pressurised and heated which is why they are so warm . The jacket would have been made o f sheepskin to keep the airman warm .

Map Pocket -The pocket could be used to hold directions or a map .

It would be positioned onthe airman 's thigh when hewas seated making it easyf or him to see and read the directions whilst f lying .

Scar f -The silk scar f sho ws a map this one is o f Burma . The

airman had a map o f the place he was f lying over ,not f or directions whilst f lying , but in case the plane

came do wn . If he crashed on the land he would need to kno w w here the enemy were , w here ally troops are and where the nearest city , to wn or port is . The map would be worn around the neck f or warmth and so would be readily available if he had an emergency and had to leave the plane , or the plane crashed .

Helmet -The microphone allo ws the pilot to talk to other airmen on board and the headphones mean that he can hear what they are saying . The plane would

have been very noisy and having the headphones built into the helmet makes it easier f or him to hear and blocks out some o f the background

noise . The tube at the f ront o f the mouth piece would provide the airman with oxygen .

WW2 Aircra f t Crash Sites at Sea

There are many ways in which this could be used in class .

    1. Ask each pupil to cut one out and then arrange them into a f ormation f light with one plane at the f ront , t wo behind it , three behind that etc . This helps with numeracy as it demonstrates triangular numbers . Tell the class that this is ho w British pilots were trained to f ly during the Battle o f Britain . U n f ortunately it was not a good tactic the pilot in the f ront plane

was the only pilot who could look out f or the enemy as the other pilots had to f ocus on keeping f ormation . The German 's q uickly realised that this was a f oolish way to f ly and called the British Air Force 'idiotenreihen ' meaning idiots in ro ws ! This tactic was later changed .

    2. Colour the planes in the top o f a Spit f ire was khaki but the underside was blue w hy was this ? Spit f ires designed to f ly at sea were blue on top w hy was this ? (Hint - it's to do with

    camouflage!) .

    3. Write on the template . There are several activities that this could be used f or I ask pupils to write do wn ho w a British airman would be f eeling . We discuss our ans wers and then discuss ho w a German airman might f eel . The ans wer is (normally , but not al ways !) that they would have f elt very similar .
