Teaching Philosophy
The role that teachers play in today’s society is paramount. Many individuals can happily
recall an educator who positively impacted their lives by helping them attain their goals and
dreams. This crucial profession is a noble vocation where I can work with students as a dedicated
servant-leader. I recognize that there are numerous factors that make an effective teacher in the
classroom. This type of teacher is able to serve their students by providing for their intellectual,
physical, and emotional needs. During my journey as a potential teacher, I have dedicated myself
to becoming an effective educator.
The effective teacher is truly a talented individual. In addition to being experts in their
content, they are able to deliver their curriculum in a meaningful and engaging manner. They are
able to incorporate innovative materials and teaching strategies while appropriately integrating
technology in the classroom. Their dedicated leadership in the classroom extends to other school-
related activities such as sports, clubs, and other educational activities in the school. They
exemplify interpersonal skills in communicating and collaborating with students, parents,
colleagues, and administrators. Perhaps, most importantly, they must demonstrate a passion
toward serving the needs of their students. These important skills and dispositions are part of
what makes an effective educator.
This effective educator ensures that their classroom is a place of learning that challenges
students to exercise and extend their intellect. Their classroom is a stimulating learning
environment where students are reasonably challenged and encouraged to think critically through
a variety of teaching methods. Ultimately, they transmit the idea to students that school is an
introduction to a lifetime of learning where one can never know enough.
Along with accommodating the various physical needs of their students, the effective
teacher makes them feel safe in their classroom; especially those from troubled backgrounds.
Their classroom is a setting that accommodates the various physical needs of students while
ensuring their safety. Their classroom is an open, emotionally safe environment that promotes
positive peer interaction that helps socialize students for the larger world. Such teachers
effectively contribute to the social needs of their students by establishing a classroom that extols
the democratic values of the larger society by promoting open discussion and affirming the
dignity and equity of all students.
Through my passion for the discipline of social studies, I plan to motivate students to
value the subject. Teaching will allow me to share my interest in history with others in order to
encourage them to explore the subject in the same way various educators have done for me.
History not only allows the individual to grow in knowledge; it promotes, preserves, and gives
meaning to the identity and culture of societies across the globe. It helps create an active,
responsible citizenry that ensures the success of democracy.
Teachers are also an important role model for students which I hope to aspire to.
Throughout my years in and around school, I have seen instances where teachers and coaches
become key role models and mentors for students especially coming from troubled backgrounds
that lack proper guidance. This is why teaching has always appealed to me and why I know I will
make a fine teacher. The ability to share my passion of social studies with students and work
with them as a servant-leader will ensure that my years as a teacher are extremely fruitful and
worthwhile.
