Team A Example of a Worked ExampleHow do you find the average gain needed for students as determined from a SMART goal?

How To Find The Gains For SMART GoalsSMARTS=SpecificM=MeasureableA= AlignedR= RealisticT=Timely

SMART goals are goals written for individual students, whole classes, or entire schools in an effort to raise student achievement (Ryan Homistek, Personal Communication, March 17, 2013).2SMART Goal: Whole ClassKelseys 4th grade virtual class will make an average 10% proficiency gains in Reading according to Standard Test Scores by May 2013.

Once you have determined the realistic percentage gain for your group of students, it is time to set a numeric target based on students current data (Virtual Organization Portal, 2013).3Kelsey Elementary School/4th GradeNameReadingAlex78Anthony73Blair67Brooke43Carmen91Charlita47Douglas81Jorge58Joshua79Kim94Latisha79Li100Rachel91Robert48Rupert54Sara93Seth88Sheetal95Tawayna67Wayne89Kelseys 4th grade virtual class will make an average 10% proficiency gains in Reading according to Standard Test Scores by May 2013.

This 10% gain is a 10% gain from the class average. To find the average, we must add all the scores and then divide that number by the number of scores added (Virtual Organization Portal, 2013).4Finding Average Score78+73+67+43+91+47+81+58+79+94+79+100+91+48+54+93+88+95+67+89=1515

(Virtual Organization Portal, 2013)

When we add up all 20 scores, our total is 1,515. To find the average score for this class, we now divide 1,515 by 20 (the number of scores added)5Finding Average Score151520= 75.7575.75 is the average Reading score for this class. Our SMART goal is to make a 10% increase from this number.

What score is 10% Higher than 75.75?To find a percent of a number you divide your percent by 100 and multiply the decimal to the number

10/100=.1010% of 75.75 is

.10 X 75.75=

7.575

10% of our average score, 75.75 is 7.575. That means our average score must increase by 7.575 points. 7New Score to Strive ForAverage score= 75.75

Add 10%= 7.575

75.75+7.575= 83.325 or the next whole number, 84

(Virtual Organization Portal, 2013)8SMART Goal: Whole ClassKelseys 4th grade virtual class will make an average 10% proficiency gains in Reading according to Standard Test Scores by May 2013.

This graph represents students current average at 75.75 and their 10% goal of 83.325 (Virtual Organization Portal, 2013).9SMART Goal: Individual StudentAlex will raise his proficiency in Reading by 10% according to Standard Test Scores by May 2013.

(Virtual Organization Portal, 2013)10Alexs ScoreWhat is 10% of Alexs current Reading Score?

Current score= 78

78X.10=7.8

Why do we multiply 78 by .10?

10%=1/100=.10

What do you do with 7.8 now?

(Virtual Organization Portal, 2013)11Alexs Goal Score for ReadingCurrent Score=78Add 10%= 7.8

Goal= 78+7.8= SMART Goal is 85.8
