    Congratulations Team Missouri!

You all deserve a big round of applause and a pat on the back for being selected to Team Missouri. You get to represent the nearly 17,000 athletes, 3,000 coaches and 1,500unified partners here in Special Olympics Missouri at the 2014 National Games in New

    J ersey. Great J ob!

Now you need to prove to the rest of SOMO that you deserve thishonor. Be proud of yourself, but dont look down on those not on the team. Be excited andhappy that you are going to New J ersey, but dont brag about it. Show everyone what youshowed us at camp. Be polite, help others, step up without being asked and always be agood sport.

Team Missouri is much more than just a sports team. We are a family and we showeveryone how proud we are to be on this team. We expect all of you to do your best andif that means you placed fourth or first, we will be proud of you just same.

Now sit back and enjoy the ride. Train hard and walk at least THREE times a week. Makesure to tell your coaches what is going on with you and how you are training. Ask yourlocal coach to help you train. Your Team Missouri coaches are preparing training plansand schedules for you to follow, so be sure to do what they ask.

Your Team Missouri coaches are also planning training weekends or evenings to get withyou and work out. Make sure to attend these trainings and if you cannot, be sure to callyour coach as soon as you know that you have to miss a practice. Failure to let a coachknow that you are not attending may be grounds for dismissal from the team.

It may seem like a very long ways away right now, but do not wish your life away. It willbe here before you know, so take the time to enjoy your accomplishment, get to knowyour teammates and coaches and have fun!

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) regarding paperwork

My athlete just had a physical done within the last 6 months. Does he/she needanother one?

Yes. The Games Operating Committee (GOC) requires a physical within one year of theevent. Also, they require that we use their form for the physical.

Do we need to submit two passport-type photographs with the paperwork?

No. We took passport-type photographs of everyone at Selection Camp so we do notneed photographs.

My athlete takes s everal medications and these change quite often. With thephysicals due in November, how will the GOC and Team Missouri know what he/shetakes and when?

We require a new medication list be sent with your athlete at departure so that we have acurrent list.

How do I know if my athlete needs the Atlanto-axial Instability examination?

Ask your doctor. This is for athletes with Downs Syndrome. Special Olympics requires thatall athletes with Downs Syndrome have an Atlanto-axial Instability exam if they participatein Aquatics (use a dive start), play soccer, do the High J ump or Pentathlon events in

Track & Field or the Squat Lift in Powerlifting.

Why does t he GOC need my athletes prof ile?

These are used to give to the media. In some cases athletes are selected for differenthonors like being involved in the Opening or Closing Ceremonies, or being interviewed orasked to give a speech. The GOC uses these profiles to tell the athletes story or tointroduce them.
