CSI GuidesVICTIM STATEMENT

Mr Gowen Gethim 15 Letsby Avenue

Me and my wife were away on holiday. We got home at about 10pm and pulled into the drive in our car. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until we went into the house. There was stuff everywhere. Someone had been through all the cupboards, and smashed a lot of our stuff. My laptop was gone, my wife’s jewellery, just to name a few.

It looked like they got in through the kitchen window, tried to prise it open and then just smashed it. Climbed over the sink and stepped in the cat’s food. The Police scenes of crime officers took the imprint. They also found some fingerprints that didn’t belong to us. They broke our back fence climbing over it into the neighbour’s garden.

CSI GuidesWITNESS STATEMENTMrs Ama Lyar 44 Onyer Way

Our house backs onto 15 Letsby Avenue. We were forever throwing back footballs to their children when they were growing up! I was in the kitchen which overlooks the back garden, washing up after a cup of tea.

Our security light came on and to my surprise there was a man in our back garden! I shouted for my husband upstairs but the man in our garden didn’t hang about. He had climbed over the fence from number 15 and then ran down the side of our house. We tried to chase him but he vanished so quickly. I called the police at about 9:30pm I think, to say what I had seen.

I would say he was fairly fit because although he broke our fence he climbed over a 6 foot fence! He had dark hair and had a big holdall with him. Not a backpack. He had pale skin, a bit of a beard or maybe stubble, and long hair. But he looked too broad to be a lady.

CSI GuidesWITNESS STATEMENT

Ms Dee Cryption 11 Letsby Avenue

I have been feeding their cat while they were on holiday. I feed it twice a day, once in the morning at 8am and once at night about 10pm. However, as they were coming home that day, they said just to feed it in the morning.

So on the day of the burglary, I went to feed their cat at about 8am. Everything was tidy and locked when I left and all the lights were off.

Miss Carrie Daway 43 Onyer Way

I just finished watching my favourite television programme and got up to close the front curtains a bit after 9pm. Across the road outside number 44, I saw a man. He was wearing dark clothes, like a jumper, and jeans. He was carrying a gym bag with a white stripe. He did not look overweight. I thought he was just leaving after visiting.

CSI GuidesWITNESS STATEMENT

Mr Stu Pid 16 Letsby Avenue

I got home before 9pm. I drove past someone. It looked like they were waiting for a lift on the corner. I think they were wearing a dark jumper. They had long hair in a ponytail. Think it was a man, but you can’t be totally sure when these 20-somethings have got long hair.

Mr Rob Banks 17 Letsby Avenue

I put my milk bottles out by 9 every night ready for collection. I noticed there was bloke hanging about on the corner. He was probably not 30, in his 20s I’d say, with a ponytail. Not noticeably tall or striking in appearance. Just like he was waiting for something.

CSI Guides

Police Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) use a magnetic powder to dust for fingerprints at a crime scene. You’ll use a simpler technique to look at your fingerprint:

1. Heavily shade a pencil on a patch of paper. 2. Press your thumb to the graphite and roll it a little side to side 3. Lift your thumb and press it to the sticky side of a piece of sellotape 4. Stick the tape into your booklet 5. Match your general fingerprint type

CSI Guides

Police Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) can use a footprint found at the scene to make a rough calculation of shoe size and also the height of a suspect.

1. Using evidence collected and witness statements, identify the footprint that does not belong to a family member

2. Measure the length of the footprint - make sure you measure from front to back, not diagonally

3. Divide the length by 15 4. Multiply that number by 100 - this is the suspect’s approximate height

2 x 100 = 200cm tall

CSI Guides

Police Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) use DNA profiling on evidence such as blood, bone, hair and other parts of body tissues etc.

Everyone has a distinctive DNA profile. Forensic Scientists compare these DNA profiles to determine whether a suspect’s DNA profile matches one from the crime scene.

Compare the suspect’s DNA found at the scene with those in the database. Is there a match? Note it in your booklet.
