Sport at Rougemontcontinues to go from strength to strength

Meet the staff team behind the success of the Sixth

Form

Mr McMahon has plenty of exciting news to share on

the ICT front

Take a look at what Year 10 have been up to in Biology

These are very exciting times to be a part of Rougemont with our outstanding exam results in the summer and our ongoing commitment to improve the school infrastructure. Partnerships are being developed to continue to improve the nurturing and learning environment of the pupils.

However, as we continue to provide opportunities for our pupils, teaching

staff, parents and non-teaching staff all have a role to play to ensure we

maximize the full potential of each pupil. I am keen to get the views of

parents on ways they feel we can develop the School. We have recently

organised parent focus groups to discuss catering and communications

with more focus groups planned for the future.

I would also like to thank all the non-teaching staff who play a pivotal role

in the day-to-day running of the School. These are often not fully

recognised but all play a key part. From our Bus Drivers, who provide an

excellent service transporting pupils to and from School, Catering staff who

provide first-class meals, to the Facilities and Cleaning team who maintain

our 55 acre site to a high standard and, not forgetting the Finance,

Marketing and Administrative departments who ensure the School is run in

a professional manner. A massive thanks to them for all their hardwork.

SPORT SUCCESS

U9 RUGBY FESTIVAL

AT LLANDAFF:

Pupils enjoyed their

first experience of

contact rugby last

Friday.

The team played

with lots of grit and

determination with

tries galore being

the theme. We

played 5, winning 4

and drawing 1.

Congratulations to Leo &

Charlie for their continued

success in representing

the Dragon’s U16 Rugby

team this season. Both

have played against the

Scarlets and Ospreys this

year and we wish them

well in the next game

against the Cardiff Blues.

Let’s hope that Leo can

score another try as he

did against the Scarlets.

The Biology Challenge is a competition open to students

around the world. It aims to stimulate students’ curiosity

for the natural world and encourage them to take an

interest in biology outside of school.

The competition consists of two, 25-minute multiple choice

papers with questions set on the school curriculum.

However, the competition also rewards those students

whose knowledge of the subject has been increased by

reading books and magazines, watching natural history

programmes, taking notice of the news media for items of

biological interest, and are generally aware of our natural

flora and fauna.

Those pupils achieving a Gold, Silver or Bronze award

receive a certificate and are pictured. Well done to all

those who took part!

BIOLOGY CHALLENGEWell done to Year 11 for their performance in the Biology Challenge.

Hands-on learning through experiments

SENIOR SUBJECT SPOTLIGHT

Year 10 pupils were taking full advantage of the

science equipment in Mr Cobb’s lab earlier this week

as they carried out experiments as part of their GCSE

preparation.

The task at hand was to measure the energy content of

food which is a specified practical at GCSE level.

Pupils had to calculate the energy in calories/grams, of

five different foods. Pupils assessed the temperature

change when the food was burned underneath a set

volume of water.

The small class size meant that each group had ample

opportunity to get to grips with the food and digestion

topic with Mr Cobb on hand to answer the exploratory

questions of the pupils.

Mrs van der Linde (L) and Mrs Jenkins (R) lead the Sixth Form Team

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Joining Rougemont in 2004 as a Chemistry teacher,

Mrs van der Linde was head of department for many

years before passing the mantle to Mrs Langford

earlier this year. In her role as Head of Sixth Form,

Mrs van der Linde, who hails from South Africa,

oversaw the move of the Sixth Form to its new home in

the Frank Edwards Building at the start of 2019.

This September, Mrs Jenkins joined the team as

Assistant Head of Sixth Form. Mrs Jenkins has also

been at the School since 2004.

Both moved into teaching after careers in industry. Mrs

van der Linde was a pharmacist whilst Mrs Jenkins

was an analytic chemist before moving into education.

Both Mrs van der Linde and Mrs Jenkins are former

parents of Rougemont having both recently gone

through the A Level years with their own children.

When asked what they were most looking forward to

this year, both agreed the Fashion Show in November

is high on the list as well as the half marathon in March

2020.

They’re both looking forward to next week’s Sixth Form

Open Evening and welcoming Year 11 pupils and

parents to learn more about life in Rougemont Sixth

Form.

We welcome all Year 11 pupils and their parents to the

Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 1 October.

All Heads of Subject will be available to talk to pupils

about their options and career choices, and the new

Sixth Form Centre will be open for pupils and parents to

tour.

The evening will also give an opportunity for pupils and

parents to learn more about the Scholarship programme

for Sixth Form entry in 2020.
