AUTOMATED RAPID REEF ASSESSMENT SYSTEM - ARRAS
• Funded by Department of Science and Technology
• Duration – 3 years (1 June 2010-31 May 2013)
• Program Partners:
– University of the Philippines
– Mapua Institute of Technology
– De La Salle University
3
Program Objectives
• Year 1 – Develop Rapid Reef Assessment Tools
• Year 2 – Deploy Tools to Stakeholders
• Year 3 – Apply ALL ARRAS Tools on a Location of National Significance
• Verde Island Passage
4
Issues with Reef Assessment
• Provincial fieldwork is costly.
• Repeated surveys are necessary
• Rapid assessment is needed in case of catastrophies
– Ship grounding on reef
– Oil spills, etc.
Our Solution:
• Citizen Science – teach coastal communities/stakeholders how to use
ARRAS tools. Let them do the local survey.
• Tools must be low-cost – Can be mass produced
• Easy to use – Even non-scientists will not be afraid to use them
• Easy to construct – End users can make their own or repair their existing
kit.
Republic of the Philippines
• Archipelago
• 7100 +/-1 islands
• 92M people
• 5th longest coastline in the world
• 60% live in coastal communities
7
Islands are in close proximity
