TEC EDMONTON 2013/14 ANNUAL REPORT2

CEOFive years ago, we envisioned Edmonton as one of North America’s leading innovation regions. Through many avenues, this

is now being realized, and we’re thrilled to be playing

a part in Greater Edmonton’s renaissance. We do

this by providing direct, high-value services to young

technology companies, to help them access capital,

develop new markets, manage intellectual property,

and grow successfully.

As we have reported before, our ~125 active clients

are an outstanding group of companies. Since 2011,

TEC Edmonton clients have grown both revenue

and employment by 25% per year, compared to

a benchmark growth rate of ~10% for early-stage

technology companies. In the last three years, they

have generated $310M in revenue, raised $160M in

financing, invested $85M in R&D, and now employ

over 1800 people. Their one-year survival rate of 98%

is well above the national benchmark rate of ~85%.

We attribute these outcomes to our clients, not to

TEC. But we do know that companies using our

services – and those of other accelerators – do much

better.

TEC Edmonton is a unique organization. Our model is

receiving growing recognition from around the world.

• We are a true community partnership: a joint

venture between the City of Edmonton and the

University of Alberta, with strong support from

multiple funders, corporate sponsors, and from

our clients.

• We have a unique Human Resources model

based on strong experiential and technical

credibility. Our 12 executives-in-residence have

deep experience as executive-level entrepreneurs.

They are supported by highly qualified Business

Development Associates. Both these groups are

expected to move on from TEC: this constantly

adds to the entrepreneurial skills in the region.

In addition, our technology management

professionals are among the best in Canada.

• Our strong network brings together entrepreneurs,

investors, researchers, governments, and large

companies to create new economic opportunities.

This focus on a) strong technical and experiential

credibility, b) broad community sponsorship and c)

strong networks drives the excellent outcomes that

make Greater Edmonton an innovation leader.

A richness of research, innovation and

entrepreneurship will ensure Alberta remains a place

where present and future generations will thrive. It’s an

ecosystem we’re proud to support, and we thank our

clients for helping TEC Edmonton be named the 2014

“Incubator of the Year” by Startup Canada, and the

10th Best University Business Incubator in the world by

the University Business Incubator Index.

We congratulate all our clients and thank our board,

funders, sponsors and dedicated people for helping

TEC contribute to a stronger region and province.

Board ChairBridging the gap between research and community is key to Alberta’s economic growth. TEC Edmonton was created as that bridge,

connecting the world-class innovation of the University

of Alberta (UAlberta) with the business community.

The University is privileged to support some of

the world’s top researchers, with groundbreaking

technologies under development that can enhance

quality of life and grow our region’s economy. As the

technology management agent for the University of

Alberta, this year TEC Edmonton helped launch five

spin-off companies and supported 12 university pre-

incorporated projects. TEC increased our UAlberta

portfolio with the addition of 90 inventions, 91 patent

applications and 19 licenses/options. In addition,

TEC Edmonton staff contributed to the University by

accessing $15.3M of research funding, which will

contribute to future commercial outcomes.

I’m delighted to see TEC Edmonton recognized

by the University Business Incubator Index as

the 10th best university incubator in the world.

It’s a glowing reflection of TEC’s dedication to the

transfer of knowledge from our campus to the

region. I look forward to another year of outstanding

commercialization, and invite everyone to join us at

TEC’s annual “Innovation… Makes Sense” event,

celebrating the outstanding achievements of University

of Alberta research commercialization.

Then-college students Rakesh Soni and Deepak Gupta had already launched two online projects using their own websites, but the response was sluggish. The problem:

websites forcing people to “register” with a username,

password and filling in various fields. Nobody wants to

waste time on such mundane chores, and usernames

and passwords are long forgotten when a website is

re-visited down the road.

Why not sign in via social media? Why not click on a

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google or Yahoo button

for instant sign-in? Soni and Gupta knew it could be

done, and LoginRadius was the means to do it.

Today, LoginRadius is used by over 120,000 website

customers world-wide. It was ranked 26th among

Canada’s Top 100 Startups (by TechVibes) and has

partnerships in place with tech giants Amazon.com,

Mozilla, Microsoft, DynDNS and X-Cart.

LoginRadius is still an Edmonton-based start-up

company, working closely with TEC Edmonton to grow in

a business-like way.

LoginRadius was honoured as a runner-up in the 2013

TEC VenturePrize Fast Growth Competition. Using TEC

Edmonton’s mentoring and coaching services, and

leveraging TEC Venture Angels to pitch for angel funding,

its first oversubscribed round of angel financing brought

in $350,000, and later raised $1 million in venture capital.

Fourteen world-renowned virologists, their labs and research staff are gathered

on one floor of the University of Alberta’s Katz Group

Centre for Pharmacy and Health Research.

Their mission at the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology:

to produce new knowledge to win the battle against

virus-caused diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C,

influenza and herpes. Among the group’s sterling

researchers are Dr. Lorne Tyrrell, inventor of the

Hepatitis B vaccine, and the co-discoverer of the

Hepatitis C virus, Dr. Michael Houghton.

To translate that knowledge into practical disease-

fighting products, a new University of Alberta spin-off

company Prophysis was created.

TEC Edmonton is assisting Prophysis with business

development and market research, plus lending its

patenting and licensing expertise to the company.

To date, two potential products have been patented.

Dr. Luis Schang’s research into anti-viral compounds

known as RAFIs could lead to treatment for a wide

range of virus-caused afflictions. Patents have been

granted in the USA, China and Japan, and are under

examination in other jurisdictions. Dr. David Evans’

oncolytics program has proven effective in treating

cancer tumours in animal models. The process

has received a USA patent, and will now undergo

regulatory review of its safety in humans.

Other potential Prophysis products include new

anti-virals developed through advanced computer

technology, processes to analyse drug toxicity, and

new systems to diagnose liver diseases.

“We’re moving ahead,” says Dr. Schang, who also

serves as President of Prophysis. “Our technologies

can make the world better.”

University of Alberta researcher Dr. David Bressler’s patented waste-oil-to-diesel invention is coming to fruition. A pilot plant

(a mini-refinery turning out 20 litres of pure diesel

an hour) is now operational at the Edmonton Waste

Management Centre of Excellence.

Parent company Forge Hydrocarbons is moving ahead

with plans for a fully commercial refinery producing

60 to 80 million litres of diesel a year, all from used

cooking and industrial oils – oils that would otherwise

be nothing but waste.

Once the first plant is operational, more will be built

across Canada close to supplies of used and/or waste

oils. As the refining process is not capital-intensive,

smaller refineries near feedstock make more economic

sense than building one central plant.

Dr. Bressler has nothing but praise for the technology

management and business development assistance

he and Forge Hydrocarbons have received from TEC

Edmonton.

CCW Energy Systems’ EnerSaver is readying for take-off. The market is ready, says

Canadian Operations Manager David Melligan. And,

with three EnerSaver models each tailored to specific

market conditions, so is CCW Energy Systems.

The original EnerSaver – an electrical device designed

for oil-field pumps – is installed between the power line

and the oilfield pump in remote areas. When electricity

travels long distances via transmission lines, it not only

loses power but quality.

The EnerSaver cleans and smooths out the “dirty”

power coming off the grid, thus substantially reducing

electricity consumption by electrical motors at the

wellhead. The original EnerSaver also captures energy

from the pump jack, energy that can be returned to the

grid where such programs exist.

Along the way, as the Edmonton-based company

developed a technology marketing road map with

TEC Edmonton, CCW realized a simplified Enersaver

(minus the power-generating feature) would be equally

attractive in the marketplace. CCW continues to

develop new ways to reduce power consumption,

while adding more clean energy options for industry.

Meanwhile, a third hybrid Enersaver model was

developed that can provide its power-saving benefits

without interfering with previously installed current

control systems and well control software.

Internationally, the EnerSaver is undergoing approval

for use in Oman and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)

countries.

professional engineer, I’m responsible for public

safety,” says Dr. Nobes. “Going through an

engineering design process ensures the device

operates as intended without jeopardizing safety.”

Could Szepesy have gone to a private engineering

and testing firm?

“Sure,” says Dr. Nobes. “But given the small scale

of the project and challenges related to its unique

design, the university can use Ron’s pump as an

opportunity to give graduate students real work

experience, while using specific knowledge from

their research to make the project a success.”

The introduction to Dr. Nobes, through TEC

Edmonton and UA Solve, has been invaluable,

Szepesy says. “I’m excited. He brings credibility to

the project. I will be able to show future customers

an engineered project – not just a machine shop

invention.”

UA Solve

Zoltech is a startup company in Alberta, one of the first

to take advantage of TEC Edmonton and the University

of Alberta’s UA Solve program.

“I had developed the Zoltech SureShot pump in a

machine shop,” says inventor Ron Szepesy. “I built my

prototype. It works in the way I had intended, but that

doesn’t mean it’s safe for public use.”

As time went by, Ron became more aware of what had

to be done to bring his pump to market, and it was a

monumental task. Through the recommendation of his

TEC Edmonton business advisor, he turned to UA Solve.

UA Solve Manager and TEC Edmonton Business

Development Associate Chris Lerohl sat down with

Ron to define the challenge as best they could. Chris

then went to the University of Alberta’s Department of

Mechanical Engineering.

TEC Venture AngelsDIRECTOR Randy Thompson INDUSTRY Investment & Funding

TEC introduces one of Canada’s largest angel investor networks

TEC Venture Angels

TEC Venture Angels launched in February 2014 as a

joint venture of the VA Angels private angel investors

group (Edmonton chapter) with TEC Edmonton’s

Alberta Deal Generator angel investor group.

In its first six months, more than 105 companies

applied through TEC Edmonton to pitch to the TEC

Venture Angels member investors. TEC Edmonton

carefully screens all applicants to ensure top quality

prospects for its investors.

Of the 105, 26 were investment ready – 18 making

their pitches to five investor-only meetings and eight

more presenting their companies at two public TEC

Venture Angel forums.

Members of the TEC Venture Angels decided to

invest in four Edmonton startups – SAM IO and

Granify received $200,000 between them. Past TEC

Edmonton client Innovative Trauma Care, back for a

third funding round, raised $110,000. VenturePrize

runner-up and TEC Centre tenant LoginRadius was

awarded $50,000.

The investments from the TEC Venture Angel group

represented investor confidence. The four companies

have since gone on to leverage the Venture Angels’

initial investments, raising close to $4 million in total.

TEC Edmonton gave us traction, lent us

expertise in developing our business plan,

expanded our business network, gave us

visibility and introduced us to investors. If we hadn’t

had TEC Edmonton’s help, we’d easily be six to eight

months behind where we are today.
