❖ Ideas of using technology in an ELA classroom❖ Ways to manage technology in your classroom❖ Ways to enhance your ELA lessons❖ Using technology to differentiate❖ Using technology to assess students❖ How to find new ideas and resources for continuing your integration

What you will NOT get- However, I’d be glad to share or discuss ideas after the session with you:❖ Getting started with 1:1 - purchasing, training, rollout of devices,

management of devices, etc, classroom management.

What will YOU get from this today?

Curriculum Integration Re-Creating vs. Enhancing

● There is NO need to scrap all your current lessons and start over.

● Instead, look at how you can use what you have already and incorporate technology into it.

● How can you use technology to enhance your existing lessons and curriculum?

➔ Technology integration should be purposeful➔ It should enhance the instruction➔ It should engage students

Original Enhanced-Handwriting several different drafts of an essay.

-Typing and easily revising an essay. Easy feedback from teacher or student peer.

-Students push their desks together to work on a project during class.

-Students can collaborate on a project from any where in the classroom and beyond (make sure to set expectations for online collaboration).

-Students prove their learning with a multiple choice test.

-Students can choose a personalized way to prove they understand their learning through multimedia presentations!

There is no wrong or right device. Whether you choose the iPad or Chromebook, there are certain benefits to each.

In my opinion, you need to decide what you want from the device. The IT dept. should not decide based upon what’s easiest to manage. They are not the curriculum experts or teaching with the device.

Let’s Quickly Discuss Device

ShowMe app video link

This app allows you to talk and draw at the

same time. You can add photos as well.

Uses: Math(have students explain as they complete problem), Reading (have students take screenshots of information from text and explain supporting evidence, vocabulary, finding figurative lang, finding facts, explain concepts)

-Teacher makes one with directions and students do the same for homework. Share with class.

● Figurative Language Example

Video Description Link

These are Pre-made trading cards:

Fictional Person, Real Person, Fictional

Place, Real Place, Object, Event, Vocab

Just choose the type of card you would like to use and complete the blank prompts of info.

Uses: Vocabulary words, Settings for stories, Historical Figures/Events, Characterization, Science (objects, planets, rocks, animals), Foreign Language (country descriptions), Biographies, and many more for all subject areas.

Private Journal app

This is a journaling app. You can add

photos, music from your iTunes, stickers.

Uses: Notes from chapter, "Thinking Questions" from reading, response to reading journal. Add 5 stickers and tell why you chose those for this part of the story/chapter, do a photo journal for chapter/reading.

Make Dice Lite video

This app allows you to place questions or numbers on the dice. You can add more than one.

Uses: Create quiz questions for a chapter, create character traits, create comprehension questions for a chapter, write down what you were thinking about when you read the chapter, create vocabulary words, math equivalents. Ask a

question about the main character, Ask a question about the conflict and explain answer, Ask a prediction question.

Creating a Character Avatar - Stepping into the character’s shoes.

I used this app when it was free in iTunes. Now it is $1.99 in iTunes, BUT it is FREE in Google PLay. I would NOT pay for this. There are plenty that are FREE: Tellegami, Gabit

3D Avatar Activity

Character iMovie

Students create a talkshow about what is happening in book.★ You could also do this with a Flipcam or record with a cellphone.

★ I uploaded these to edmodo for viewing by students.

Public Service Announcement

Character Social Media Activity

Using social media to describe your character

Student Fluency Activity

Activity for students to listen to their own reading and analyze.

I used this free, easy recording app from iTunes. There are lots like this in iTunes and Google Play.

*Will have to have discussion about listening to your own voice - sounds weird - more for middle school

Quick Voice app

Online book discussion groups - I like using Edmodo.

Must teach these expectations - what does a discussion look like?Online Discussion Expectation Agreement**During the year I have them videotape their face-to-face discussions and we

analyze.

Possibly Activities for group discussions - ❏ Do a text to world connection from the chapter and share with your

group. The next day, they review a peer’s connection and leave a comment/feedback.

❏ Share vocabulary word with group.❏ Write 3 questions for discussion for your group based upon the

reading for the day(can’t be answered by a Yes or No. Must evoke discussion. The next day, they choose someone and answer/communicate their ideas. They have to choose someone who has not already had their questions answered.

Vocabulary Practice/Building

*Use with spelling words, Greek/Latin Roots. Can add pictures for visual learners. Nice study features with this app - in iTunes and Google Play

*Add your own lists/test - Free or paid. I used as a bell ring activity. This really helped increase students scores.

Other ELA Websites

No Red Ink - Grammar and writing Lessons. Free version is good but is limited to certain topics/lessons.

ReadWorks.Org -Reading passages with question sets (paired readings, poetry, free lessons)

Using Tech for Assessments/Differentiation

● Edmodo Snapshot - iTunes, Google, Web. You choose a group, select grade level, select standards, select time length. Edmodo creates for you and grades for you. Now you can see who needs what and plan your lessons.

● Kahoot - Web only (testing Google app now). The teacher creates a free account at getkahoot.com and starts building

their first multiple choice quiz. For each question you can choose whether or not to award points, and also the time limit that you

want to impose upon your students who are answering the question. You can also add images to your question. Alternatively, you

can add a video question by adding a YouTube URL and selecting the portion of the video you want to show.

● Socrative - iTunes, Google, or Web. You can create a pre-prepared quiz for your students, or conduct some live "on the

fly" questioning. The pre-prepared quiz option lets you build your own assessments with either multiple choice, true/false, or

short answer questions. You can add as many as you like, and can include explanations for each question if required. One nice

feature of the quizzes is the ability to add Common Core Curriculum tags to your assessments to help you remember which

particular skills you are targeting.

● Plickers - iTunes, Google, Web - create your account online. Only teacher needs technology(cell phone or iPad). Give

students questions, they show you their answer card, you scan room with your device. Instant results on your phone and on your

SMARTboard/Whiteboard.

Create Screencast Video Lessons

➔ Apple QuickTime Player - For Macs only. This is what I used. VERY easy! Can upload to youtube

or insert in documents from desktop

➔ Screencast-O-Matic - Free and has Mac and Windows version. Does limit to 15min videos on Free.

Paid is VERY cheap - $15/year.

Videos can be saved to your computer as an mp4, uploaded directly to YouTube or published to Screencast-O-Matic’s own video-shari

ng server (useful if YouTube has not yet been unblocked by your IT department).

Thinking While Reading Video

Free online video resources: Learn Zillion, ShowMe, Teachertube, ReadWorks, Gooru

Create an iBook

First, download iBook Author app. Use widgets to add interactive activities. It’s that easy to get started.

Non-fiction

I introduced Non-Fiction Fridays in my ELA Classroom:

★ Newsela- it has quizzes (lightbulb) and can change the reading level, assign article and quizzes. Gives scores to teacher. Can print articles and quizzes

★ Tweentribune - K-12 levels, Spanish, can change lexile, assign articles and quizzes, classroom dashboard, can give comments to students. Gives scores to teacher.
