Measurement principle

The level of the liquid (or solid) is measuredby radar signals transmitted from the antennaat the tank top. After the radar signal isreflected by the liquid surface the echo ispicked up by the antenna. As the signal isvarying in frequency the echo has a slightlydifferent frequency compared to the signaltransmitted at that moment. The difference infrequency is proportional to the distance to theliquid, and can be accurately calculated. Thismethod is called FMCW (Frequency Modula-ted Continuous Wave) and is used in all highperformance radar gauges.

Saab TankRadar® Pro uses the 10 GHz fre-quency band to get optimum balance betweenbeam width and sensitivity to antenna con-tamination.

Saab TankRadar® Prowith its flexible con-figuration is suitable forboth stand-alone appli-cations and large-scaleplant installations withvarious tank types.

The FMCW method isbased on a radar sweepwith continuouschanges in frequency.

Technical Description

Applications

Saab TankRadar Pro uses state-of-the artmicrowave technology to get highest reliabilityand precision. It measures the level of liquids, slurries as well as many solids. The gaugeoperates in a wide range of temperatures, pressures, vapor gas mixtures and various pro-cess conditions.

The applications include:

§ Chemical & petrochemical storage andprocess tanks

§ Pharmaceutical reactors

§ Food and beverage manufacturing

§ Refinery process vessels

§ Water and sewage treatment

§ Hydroelectric power generation and dams

§ Cement, powder, wood chips and othersolid material applications

Applications in processvessels with agitatorsrequire a radar gaugewith TankRadar Pro’shigh sensitivity andadvanced signal pro-cessing to separate themeasuring signal fromnoise created by dis-turbances.

Still-pipe or bridlemounting is recommen-ded for LPG applica-tions, where the surfacesometimes is boiling, and for some extremelyturbulent conditions. The pipe reduces foamand turbulence and alsoincreases surface re-flection.

The rod antenna issuitable for small nozzleopenings on tanks withcalm surfaces and shortmeasuring ranges.

Solid materials, likecement, often giveextremely small radarreflections, requiring themost sensitive antenna, the 20” parabolic.

Select the right Pro gauge

A TankRadar Pro gauge consists of a Transmit-ter Head (TH) and a tank connection includingantenna. The TH, as well as the electronics in-side, is interchangeable without opening thetank.

The Transmitter Head is available in threebasic versions:

§ LiteIntended for applications in non-hazardousareas only. Suitable for tanks withoutinternal structures and agitators, e.g. certainstorage tanks, water, dam applications etc.The Lite version has only FFT calculationsenabled providing an instrument accuracyof ±10 mm (±0.4"). Echofixer, FHAST andMET are available as options.

§ StandardFor hazardous applications, suitable formost tanks, also with internal structures, spherical and bullet tanks. The Standardversion includes the Echofixer softwarewhich more accurately than standard FFTmaps all microwave interference sources.Standard instrument accuracy is ±10 mm(±0.4") which can be improved to ±5 mm(±0.2") using the optional softwaremodules.

§ GoldGold is the most advanced version fordifficult applications in tanks with agitators, heating coils and other disturbances. Itincludes the Echofixer software, FHAST™software for increased accuracy plusMET™ software for further increaseddisturbance echo handling. Instrumentaccuracy is ±5 mm (±0.2").

Volume calculation for symmetrical tanks isincluded in all versions. Strapping table fornon-symmetrical tanks is available as an op-tion.

Various options make it possible to optimize thegauge for different applications:

§ Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT)Fast Fourier Transformation is a signalprocessing technique used to map theecho structure of the tank.

§ EchofixerA software module that makes itpossible to measure on the surface inspite of strong disturbance echoes frommechanical structures such as agitatorsand baffles.

§ Fast High Accuracy SignalTechnology (FHAST™)A module that improves the efficiency ofthe signal processing by limiting theregion to be analyzed around the surface. This results in an improved accuracy of±5 mm (±0.2").

§ Multiple Echo Tracking (MET™)Improves the resolution and accuracy inecho disturbed regions and close to thetank bottom. Continuous measurementon multiple disturbing echoes facilitatesidentification of the actual surface echo.

All software options are possible to upgrade inthe field without any changes in electronics.Upgrades are made by entering a new startcode in the gauge and can be done on atemporary basis for trial purposes.

Technical Description

Categories of liquids:

a: Oil, gasoline and other hydrocarbons, petrochemicals(dielectric constant, e

r=1.9-4.0).

b: Alcohols, concentrated acids, organicsolvents, oil/water mixtures and acetone(e

r=4.0-10).

c: Conductive liquids, e.g. water basedsolutions, dilute acids and alkalis(e

r > 10).

For liquids with er smaller than 1.9 such asliquefied gases, an 8" or bigger diameter antennais recommended if measurement is done with freepropagation. In this case the measuring range incalm surface tanks is in typical cases 15 m (50 ft).

Measuring range

The diagrams below show how the measuringrange is influenced by the antenna type, dielectric constant of the liquid (e

r) and the

process conditions. For optimum performancethe maximum measuring distance should bekept within the range indicated with darkercolour in the diagrams. Values are valid forfree propagation measurement without still-pipes (bridles).

To increase the measuring range further in tur-bulent tanks, a still-pipe can be used. For still-pipe mounted Pro gauges the typicalmeasuring range is 35-50 m (115-160 ft) also inturbulent tanks with liquids having e

r less than

1.9.

Level values are transmitted from the gauge asanalog 4-20 mA signals superimposed withHART®® or digital signals (Profibus DP orSaab’s Modbus based TRL2 field bus). Theanalog outputs are either passive forconnection to powered cables or active provi-ding signal power for display units etc. Analogoutputs can also be specified to be intrinsicallysafe.

When using the digital TRL2 field bus outputs,up to 12-15 gauges can be connected to eachtwo-wire field bus, maintaining a high dataupdating speed. Each field bus is connected toa Field Communication Unit (FCU) that hand-les up to four field buses with data from amaximum of 32 tanks. Several FCUs can beinstalled to handle a large number of tanks. From the FCU, data can be transmitted onRS232/485 or TRL2 bus formats to hostcomputers (DCS, PC or PLC). Pro gauges withTRL2 bus outputs can also be connected to theTankMaster operator software providing anOPC server that can be linked to the plantnetwork.

Data are displayed on the optional RDU40 dis-play mounted on the gauge or separately. Viathe display, up to six temperature sensors canbe connected, if the display is mountedseparately. Configuration is easily done on the4-key display keyboard.

Configuration can also be done on a HART®®

communicator or on a PC using the Windowsbased Pro Setup software package. Pro Setupincludes advanced graphics software tools, including FFT disturbance echo tracking.

Technical Description

Mechanical mounting

The TankRadar Pro gauge is easily carried tothe tank top and mounted on a suitable nozzleor pipe.

The gauge should be installed as follows:

§ Antenna oriented perpendicular to ahorizontal surface.

§ The gauge should be mounted with as fewfittings as possible within the beam angle.

§ Filling inlets creating turbulence shouldpreferably be kept at a distance.

§ Choose as large antenna diameter aspossible. A larger receiving areaconcentrates the radar beam and ensuresmaximum antenna gain. Increased antennagain offers greater margin for weak surfaceechoes.

The flat tank wall can be located within theantenna beam angle, as long as there is a mini-mum distance from the gauge to the tank wall, see picture above.

An extended cone can be used for longnozzles. The standard length of the extendedcone is 500 mm (20") for 3", 4" or 6" coneantennas. Longer cones are available onrequest.

Pipe installation

Pro gauges with cone antennas can bemounted in still-pipes. This type of installationis particularly suitable for applications withhighly turbulent liquids, or liquids with verylow er giving weak radar reflections, such asLPG. Suitable still-pipe dimensions are 2", 3",4" and 6". Also 1" pipes can be used in whichcase no antenna at all is used. The 1" and 2"still-pipe gauges are suitable för clean liquidsonly and can be delivered complete with still-pipe, deflection plate and fittings without anyneed for welding. Installation can be made in-side larger stand-pipes.

Used pipes must generally be clean inside, without irregularities, rust or excessive holes.Consult Saab or an authorized distributor forinstallation advice.

Electrical connections

The Transmitter Head has two separatejunction boxes. One is for a non-intrinsicallysafe primary signal output and power supplycables. The other is normally used forintrinsically safe (IS) HART/analog outputs oroptionally for a non-IS analog output.

Outputs can be either active or passivedepending on required options. Cables aretwisted and shielded pairs minimum 0.5 mm2
