Director’s Notes

On our first day of rehearsal, student assistant director, Joel Cumber, introduced this show as “a period piece” Footloose. A period piece!? But when I was a student here at Sheridan, Footloose opened on Broad-way as the most ground-breaking contemporary pop musical - ever. How could it now be a period piece? Well, because when I attended Sheridan College, these students weren't born yet. #fact

I am happy and proud to report that while there have been incredible advancements in the program and the industry since then, a basic truth remains the same.

The truth that the students need you. Thank you being here. Your pres-ence continues to nurture the next generation of musical theatre storytell-ers who need your support because, just like the class of 1989, they too battle fear, criticism, rejection and self-doubt on their journey to accom-plishing the only thing they've found so far that brings them happiness and fulfillment - to entertain. They need you. And we need them.

We need them to enlighten, inspire and reflect the human condition. We need them to creatively lead with fearless hearts and open minds.

On behalf of the creative and design teams, thank you to Broadway Producer(!) Michael Rubinoff for allowing us to be here. We've all loved passing on some "dos and don'ts" and practical “tips and tricks” but our greater hope is that we've fanned the flame of passion for these incredible students to change the world for the better - one story, one character, one word at a time.
