Use standard friction loss method for pipe sizing.Observe boiler maximum and minimum flow rate limitations. If system flow rate exceedsboiler maximum flow rate (as stated on page 4) or if system flow rate is unknown, Viessmann stronglyrecommends the installation of a low-loss header. See page 34 for low-loss header information.

5167472v3

.2

A low-loss header must be used when the system flowrate exceeds the maximum (or minimum) flow rate of theVitodens 200 boiler. Once the low-loss header isconnected, the built-in low-loss header logic of theVitodens 200 boiler ensures the required ∆ t across thesystem through the sensory communication between thelow-loss header and the boiler.

*Please note that the low-loss header cannot be usedwith the Vitodens 200, WB2 6-24C Combi boiler.

Please see page 35 for details.

The diagram on the left illustrates how theDHW output temperature changes in relationto the draw rate at the tap.The DHW draw rate is restricted by means ofa flow limiter to 2.1 GPM/8 ltrs per min. ata temperature of 128 ºF/53 ºC.

If more water is required, domestic cold wateris added, resulting in a lower DHW outputtemperature. In the example to the left, demonstrating thechange in DHW output temperature based onthe addition of domestic cold water, adomestic cold water input temperature of50 °F/10°C is assumed.

DHW Recirculation

13

DHW Recirculation

DHW recirculation lines increase the level ofcomfort and convenience of the domestichot water supply and reduce waterconsumption. These advantages directly derive from theimmediate availability of domestic hot waterat all draw points.

Poor insulation of the DHW recirculationline, however, can result in considerableheat loss.

Viessmann therefore recommends thateffective insulation be provided and used forDHW recirculation lines of 23 ft./7 m inlength or longer.

In addition to a recirculation pump and aflow check valve, the DHW recirculation lineshould incorporate a programmed timer toswitch off the recirculation pump overnight.

Condensate Connection/Neutralization Unit

16

Condensate Connection

Install the condensate drain pipe with asuitable gradient.Discharge condensate from the boiler intothe drainage system, either directly or (ifrequired) via a neutralization unit(accessory).

Pipe ventilation must take place betweenthe siphon trap and the neutralization unit (ifapplicable).

Condensate Connection for Vitodens 200H up to model WB2 8-32 H model WB2 11-44 and up

Condensate Drainage and Condensate Neutralization

The condensate formed both in thecondensing boiler and in the flue gas pipemust be discharged into the public sewagesystem in accordance with all applicablelocal regulations. The condensate produced by a gas-firedheating system has a pH value between 3and 4.

Some local codes may require the use of aseparate neutralization unit to treat theaggressive and corrosive nature of thecondensate. With a neutralization unit installed, allcondensate from the boiler and the flue gaspipe enters into the neutralization unitwhere it is treated and released into thepublic sewage system with a safe pH valueof above 6.5.

The use of neutralization granulate(performing the neutralizing process) isdependent on the operation of the heatingsystem. To determine the required refillamount, check granulate level several timesduring the first year of operation. In somecases one granulate fill may last an entireyear.

Contact Viessmann to order a neutralizationunit for the Vitodens 200 boiler.See Viessmann Price List for orderinformation.

The condensate discharge outlet to thedrainage system connection must be clearlyvisible. It must be installed with a suitablegradient and provided with a stench trap.

If the condensate outlet of the Vitodens200 boiler is lower than the drain, acondensate pump must be used.

Only corrosion-resistant materials must beused for condensate drainage purposes (e.g.braided hose). Do not use galvanizedmaterials or materials containing copper forpiping, couplings etc.The condensate drain must have a trap toprevent flue gas leakage.

Please note that other requirements mightapply depending on local regulations and/orproject-specific details.

It is advisable to contact your localwaterworks office (authority responsible forwaste water regulations) well beforecommencing with the installation of theneutralization unit in order to establishdetails of local regulations that apply.

The following table shows the concentrationof (effluent) substances (e.g. heavy metals)contained in the waste water from theVitodens 200 condensing boiler.

Heating Curve Adjustment (slope and shift)

The control unit regulates the boiler watertemperature (= supply temperature ofheating circuit without mixing valve) and thesupply temperature of the heating circuitwith mixing valve (in conjunction with theaccessory kit for a heating circuit withmixing valve) according to the outdoortemperature. The supply temperature that is required toachieve a given room temperature dependson the heating system and the thermalinsulation of the building that is beingheated. The adjustment of the two heating curves isused to match the boiler water temperatureand the supply temperature to theseconditions.

Heating curves:

Low temperature heating system, e.g.radiant floor heatingMedium temperature heating system,e.g. cast iron radiation, staple-upradiant floor heatingHigh temperature heating system,e.g. fintube radiation, fan coils

The boiler water temperature is limitedupwards by the fixed high limit and thetemperature set for the electronic high limit. The supply temperature cannot rise abovethe boiler water temperature.

37

How the Vitodens 200 boiler operates...

The MatriX burner blower and thecombination gas valve are factory calibratedand pre-adjusted for optimum boilerperformance at all firing rates through anon-mechanical, pneumatic modulating linkbetween combustion air and gas flows.Blower speed is automatically increased ordecreased based on heat demand andventing system resistances, therebyregulating the amount of combustion airdrawn. The pneumatic modulating linkbetween air and gas introduces the requiredamount of gas for correct combustion tomeet the current heat demand, based on alinear relationship between ∆ P air and ∆ Pgas. The optimum combustion air flow rateis recognized and monitored by thedifferential air pressure sensor (transducer). The output voltage signal of the transduceris analyzed for logic by the LGM 29 burnercontrol unit. The LGM 29 burner control unitcontains pre-programmed performancecurves and operational safety parametersunique for every boiler model.

Flue gas adaptation functionThe Vitodens 200 has a flue gas adaptationfunction. This function records, processes, and reacts in real time to fluctuations inpressure drop in the vent air-intake pipeduring normal operation caused by partialpipe blockages due to ice formation at thevent termination, debris and/or sudden highwinds. Such increase in pressure drop, ifnot promptly corrected, will reduce thecombustion air flow rate, and hence lead tounstable combustion. The differential airpressure sensor (transducer) records suchpressure drops and supplies voltage signalsto the LGM 29 burner control unit which, inturn (based on stored performance curvesand safety parameters), initiates promptadjustment of the blower rotational speed, thus readjusting the combustion air flowrate for optimum combustion. The sameautomatic adaptation logic applies ifcombustion air is reduced (or increased) dueto slower (or faster) blower speed resultingfrom line voltage drops (or increases) below(or above) the threshold of 85% (or 110%).

IMPORTANTIf a DHW storage tank other than aViessmann Vitocell 100 or 300 tank isused, the installer must verify properoperation of the Viessmann DHW tanktemperature sensor with the originalmanufacturer of the tank. Viessmannstrongly recommends the installation of atemperature tempering valve in the DHWsupply line.

The low-loss header cannot be used withthe Vitodens 200 Combi Series boiler, WB26-24C. The WB2 6-24C is specificallydesigned for small, “one-temperature”apartments or bungalows, where flow andhead requirements are low and can behandled by the built-in heating circuit pump.

Do not use the expansion board to control aseparate system heating circuit pump withVitodens 200 Combi Series boiler, WB26-24C.A heating circuit pump controlled by anexpansion board will run as a DHWrecirculation pump in parallel to the demandfor domestic hot water rather than asintended.

Upon a call for DHW, the built-in divertingsolenoid valve is energized. The boiler hotwater is diverted to the DHW loop atmaximum pump rotational speed (novariable speed pump operation during DHWproduction). Once the DHW instantaneousplate heat exchanger is satisfied, the built-indiverting solenoid valve is de-energized andheating operation resumes.

The built-in plate heat exchanger isequipped with two independent temperaturesafety features, one surface-mounted limittemperature switch on the heating boilerside and one temperature immersion controlsensor on the DHW side.

The use of a low-loss header is stronglyrecommended if the maximum water flowrate in the application concerned exceedsthe values shown in the table above, or ifthe system flow rates are unknown. The low-loss header is available asaccessory part.See the following pages for installationexamples with a low-loss header.

The 3-way mixing valve, built-in to achievethe low temperature level of the underfloorheating circuit, is controlled by an accessorykit for a heating circuit with mixing valve. The circulation pump built into the Vitodens200 boiler supplies the radiator heatingcircuit. The underfloor heating circuit issupplied by a circulation pump installed onsite which is controlled by the accessory kit.

Upon a call for DHW, the built-in divertingsolenoid valve is energized. The boiler hotwater is diverted to the DHW loop atmaximum pump rotational speed (novariable speed pump operation during DHWproduction). Once the DHW tank issatisfied, the built-in diverting solenoid valveis de-energized and heating operationresumes.

DHW supply and return piping between boiler DHW connections and the Viessmann DHW tank connections , shall be a minimum of 1”nominal pipe diameter (irrespective of the ¾” DHW connection outlet sizes provided on the boiler and the DHW tank). This will ensure theresidual head of the built-in pump is fully utilized to overcome the resistance of the DHW heat exchanger coil and to provide sufficientwater flow to the boiler heat exchanger. In non-Viessmann DHW tank applications, perform, in addition to the above, accurate calculations for DHW tank coil pressure drop versusboiler pump residual head to ensure sufficient water flow to the boiler heat exchanger. Failure to heed the above instructions may causeboiler short-cycling and inadequate DHW supply.

System Design Considerations

IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS...-this product shall be installed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.-the flexible connector (if used) cannot exceed 36”.-any level type shutoff used must be of tee handle type.

Boiler location

As a direct vent appliance, the Vitodens 200can be installed for room air independentoperation (sealed combustion) regardless ofsize and ventilation method of the room inwhich it is located. The Vitodens 200 can be installed, forexample, in the main living area of a house,in non-ventilated utility rooms, cupboards, closets and alcoves with no clearancerequired from combustible materials, as wellas in attics with a direct outlet for the fluegas/fresh air system. Follow all local andnational codes.

Flue gas system

Viessmann PPS (Polypropylene) concentricflue gas/fresh air systems for room airindependent operation (sealed combustion)and side wall venting are tested to ANSIZ21.13 - CSA 4.9 - 2000 standards and arecertified together with the Vitodens 200boiler as a constructional unit. The Vitodens 200 boiler may also be ventedvertically, using an AL29-4C® specialstainless steel, single-wall, room airdependent venting system (UL listed forcategory IV).For a more detailed description of the directvent and single-wall vent system, pleaserefer to the Vitodens 200 Venting SystemInstallation Instructions.

Flue gas temperature protection

Flue pipes used for the Vitodens 200 aresuitable for max. flue gas temperatures ofup to 248 °F/120 °C.

No flue gas temperature protection isrequired as the maximum permissible fluegas temperature is not exceeded in anyoperating condition or in the event ofmalfunctioning.

Low water cut-off

A low water cut-off may be required bylocal codes. If the boiler is installed abovethe radiation level, a low water cut-offdevice of approved type must be installed inall instances. An approved type low watercut-off device must be provided by theheating contractor. Do not install anisolation valve between the boiler and thelow water cut-off.

System layout

H The max. boiler water temperature for ...–space heating is 167 °F/75 °C.–DHW production is 172 °F/78 °C.

To minimize distribution losses,Viessmann recommends that the heatingand domestic hot water systems be basedon a maximum boiler supply temperatureof 158 °F/70 °C.

H Due to the low return temperaturesrequired for gas condensing, no mixingvalves should be used in the heatingcircuit whenever possible. If mixing valvesare required, e.g. for multi-circuit systemsor underfloor heating systems, only 3-waymixing valves must be used.Do not use 4-way mixing valves withcondensing boilers.

Water connections

Vitodens 200 boilers can be used in any fullypumped hot water heating system.Minimum system pressure is 0.8 bar/12 psig.

Chemical corrosion protection productsCorrosion does not typically occur in sealedheating systems which have been correctlyinstalled and are correctly operated. Many manufacturers of plastic pipesrecommend the use of chemical additives. In this case, only those commerciallyavailable corrosion protection productsapproved for boilers with domestic hotwater heating via single-wall heatexchangers (instantaneous plate heatexchangers or DHW tanks) must be used.

Underfloor heating systems

For underfloor heating systems Viessmannrecommends the use of plastic tubing withan oxygen diffusion barrier in order toprevent the diffusion of oxygen throughtubing. If plastic tubing without an oxygendiffusion barrier is used in underfloorheating systems, Viessmann recommendsthat such systems be separated from theboiler with a heat exchanger.

Underfloor heating systems and heatingcircuits containing a very large volume ofwater must be connected to the boiler via a3-way mixing valve; please refer to theapplicable installation example in thismanual.

Oxygen diffusion barrierunderfloor tubingThe boiler warranty does not cover leaksresulting from corrosion caused by the useof underfloor plastic tubing without anoxygen diffusion barrier. Such systems musthave the non-oxygen diffusion barrier tubingseparated from the boiler with a heatexchanger. Viessmann recommends the useof underfloor plastic tubing with an oxygendiffusion barrier.

Water quality

Treatment for boiler feed water should beconsidered in areas of known problems, such as where a high mineral content andhardness exist. In areas where freezingmight occur, an antifreeze may be added tothe system water to protect the system. Please adhere to the specifications given bythe antifreeze manufacturer. Do not useautomotive silicate based antifreeze. Pleaseobserve that an antifreeze/water mixturemay require a backflow preventer within theautomatic water feed and influencecomponents such as diaphragm expansiontanks, radiation, etc. Maximum antifreezecontent is 50% for the Vitodens 200 boiler.Do not use antifreeze other than specificallymade for hot water heating systems.System also may contain componentswhich might be negatively affected byantifreeze. Check total system frequentlywhen filled with antifreeze. Advise systemoperator/ultimate owner that system is filledwith a glycol mix.The heating contractor must provide aMSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for theantifreeze used to the systemoperator/ultimate owner.

Warranty

Our warranty does not cover damagesresulting from the following:– installation or service by unqualified andunlicensed personnel.

– attempting to perform any repair work onthe boiler other than that mentioned in theboiler literature.

– tampering with or attempting to readjustthe factory settings of the

–combination gas valve–combustion air opening of theburner blower

– leaks resulting from corrosion caused bythe use of underfloor plastic tubingwithout an oxygen diffusion barrier.

For detailed warranty information, pleaseread warranty sheet supplied with product.
