Application
This Technical Data Sheet is designed to provide information of sufficient content and detail as to enable engineers, competent in structural analysis & structural steelwork design to safely design structures incorporating our MAT 75 and MAT 125 Systems.
Design Codes
MAT 75 is a modular system (previously known as L-Trestle or Military Trestling), MAT 125 is similar to, but has greater capacity than the MAT 75 system. This system is also modular and MAT 125 Columns are fully compatible with MAT 75 Bracing and Grillage items. Both systems are for use primarily in temporary works, and as such complies with the following codes:
• BS 449:1969 inc. 1989 Amendment - Specification for the use of Structural Steel in Buildings
• BS 5975: 2008 - Code of Practice for Temporary Works Procedures and the Permissible Stress Design of Falsework
Due to its robustness and versatility, MAT 75 and MAT 125 have also become increasingly used for the temporary support of permanent highway structures during their strengthening and repair.
In order to comply with Highways Agency Technical Approval Procedures, the more onerous requirements of the following two codes have been adopted:
• BS 5400: Part 3:2000 Code of Practice for the Design of Steel Bridges
• BS 5950: Part 1:2000 and Part 5:1998 - Structural use of Steelwork in Buildings
Eurocodes
The equipment is currently being assessed to Eurocodes. Strengths relating to these codes will be published in a future revision to this document. Please refer to Mabey Hire engineering team for the latest information.
Safe Working Loads
The safe working loads for members and joints given in the Technical Data Sheet are generally based on theoretical values calculated in accordance with BS 449 & BS 5975 but with additional safety factors applied to ensure a minimum factor of safety of 2.0.
In many cases full scale laboratory tests have been carried out & compared to the calculated values. In all cases a minimum factor of safety of 2.0 against the onset of permanent deformation has been established.
All capacities are given as allowable working loads / strengths.
In addition, the stated capacities maintain the factors of safety imposed by both BS 5400 and BS 5950.
Technical Data
The technical data provided within this data sheet concerns the strengths of the individual members and joints.
MAT 75 and MAT 125 is most frequently used as a tower, where consideration will need to be given to:
• The overall height and configuration of the tower
• The method of application of the load
Product Use
For the handling and use of MAT 75 and MAT 125, please refer to the Product Information and Use Sheet ref. PIUMAT.
1.0 Introduction
In the production of this manual, analysis has been carried out to the latest revisions of these codes.

2.1 Columns, Stools & Spacers
2.1.1 Details - Columns Units
The Column Unit forms the basis of the MAT 75 and MAT 125 Systems. MAT 75 Columns are fabricated from 254x76x28kg/m RSC sections (Material Grade: S275 JR) which are battened toe to toe to form a box section of 273mm overall. MAT 125 Columns are fabricated from C10x25lb/ft (USA) RSC sections (Material Grade S355 J2 G3) battened toe to toe to form a box section of 274x273mm overall. MAT 75 & MAT 125 Columns are available in heights ranging from 0.6m to 3.6m, and are provided with 22mm diameter holes in the RSC flanges and the batten & end plates to allow connection of Grillage, Bracing & Auxiliary Components using M20 bolts.

2.1.2 Section Properties
2.1.3 Load Capacity - Axial
For general design purposes the nominal axial capacity is given in Chart A of compressive capacity for a given effective length of the member. The values below are based on a 4.0m effective length.
2.1.4 Column Capacity – End Details
Application of the load of the ends of the Columns should be through a standard MAT 75 or MAT 125 part such as a Grillage Beam, Hinge Unit or Baseplate. In the absence of this, care must be taken to ensure that the load is applied uniformly over the Column End Plate. Otherwise the capacity may be limited by the load capacity of the End Plate & Channels.
2.1.5 Loading Capacity – Bending and Shear
For general design purposes, refer to Chart B.
2.1.6 Load Capacity – Local Load Capacity at Bracing locations

2.1.7 Load Capacity – Axial & Bending Capacity
NB: Capacity may be increased for short Column lengths, refer to MH Engineers for details. Load should be applied through a stiff end unit. If applied via a local offset inducing concentrated loading then consideration should be given to local failure, see Note 2.1.4.
Note on Combined Effects Where appropriate the combined effects of axial load, bending & local effects must be considered. Please refer to MH Engineers where advice is required.
Note on Column to Column Connections Where column lengths are made up from a number of column units bolted together, due consideration should be given to the strength of the bolted joint which will be dependent on the quantity and orientation of the bolts used. See page 7 for details.

2.7.5 Bracing Design Guidance Continued
Assessment of Panel Shear Load
Care should be taken to ensure that a valid assessment is carried out of the panel shear load.
The panel shear is the horizontal component of the load in the brace(s).
Consider amplification of Panel Shear load if loading is applied in a manner shown in these examples, which could lead to a Panel Shear of 2 or 3 times ‘H’.
Example: Simple ‘H’ Frames with Pinned Ends
Panel shear load in H1 bracing = 2.0H Approx. Panel shear load in H2 bracing = 3.0H Approx.
Use of low Angle Bracing
Panel shear resistance is limited by the ‘T’ bracket flange in most cases. As seen on the Panel Shear Limit Table, low angle bracing causes higher ‘T’ bracket stresses resulting in lower bracing panel limits.
Consider also the capacity of columns to resist bending and axial load combined to carry the shear. This may provide greater resistance.
Example:
2.0 Section Properties, Capacities & Weights
In practice, some form of fixity at the prop ends is common and will considerably reduce this effect e.g. bolting to beams or concrete.

2.9 Hymat Jacks
2.9.1 Details
The Hymat Jack System was designed specifically to compliment the MAT 75 propping system, a range of attachments make them compatible with the full range of Mabey products. The Jacks are made from aluminium to reduce the weight and are available with a stroke range from 55mm to 210mm. These Jacks are fitted with lifting handles and a threaded locking collar to allow the hydraulics to be isolated.
