Elam -range of products:

In many countries wood has been a traditional, commonly used building material. Beauty, easy machining and good heat andsound insulation are the advantages of wood. Fire regulations have limited the use of wood in many cases, especially in high riseand office buildings, hospitals, oil rigs and public buildings, that is in rooms where a lot of people may gather. The serious hotelfires in recent years will increase the need to use materials with better fire properties. More consideration will have to be given tofurniture materials, floor coverings, carpets and textiles. The selection of panel products with better fire properties than those of wood is rather small. The best known are gypsum plasterboards, asbestos cement boards, chemically treated particle boards and portland cement particleboards.

Combining wood and cement gives the boards properties which make them suitable for further processing e.g. wood veneering, film facing, grooving etc., but still retaining the important fire retardation. ELAM -products involve a range of decorativelysurfaced fire retardant wall and ceiling panels for mainly public interiors. As a rule, cement bonded particleboard is used as corematerial, but conventional wood based panels as well, if no fire classification is required.Cement bonded particleboard consists of wood chips (30% dry weight) and portland cement (70% dry weight). The boards aresanded and thickness calibrated to make them suitable for surface coating. The boards can be coated in many ways. All thematerials are chosen to keep the fire resistance on as high level as possible.

"Linear", "Perfo-Linear" and "Mosaic" are panels made of MDF- or cementbonded particleboard with grooved surface.Basic idea is to give the designer "free hands" when choosing groovdistance and panel size. Breadth of groove is 3, 6 (or 8) mm. The surfacecan be wood veneered, painted or laminated with white melamine foil.

Wood veneered panels are for indoor use only. Before installation check that the room is dry and ventilated and the temperaturepreferably over 18 C °. The RH of the air preferably between 30-60 %, absolutely not over 80%.Because the colour and figure of natural wood can vary, try to avoid to install divergent panels on the same wall.

Wooden b

PI-profiles are screwed to e.g. wooden battens. Screw distance between 400-600 mm. If shorter panel dimension is over 600 mm,additional support is needed to prevent bending of the panel.

attens behind the panels are normally used on the concrete or brick wall for easier installation and straightening theconstruction. On the well made plasterboard wall with steel frame the horizontal fixing profiles can be screwed directly to framesthrough plasterboard.

Definition

The cement bonded chipboard is a board product made in flat press from reduced wood material, woodchips with the addition of hydraulic binder (portlandcement) and chemical additive for application in thebuilding industry.

Main properties of the BETONYP building boards

The Betonyp building board combines the advantageous properties of cement with those of woodparticles treated with chemical additives. The board structure is continuously layered from the finer wood chip fraction forming the upper layer onboth sides to the central coarser layer. The board surfaces are smooth, cement grey colored. The Betonypboard is lighter than the traditional cement based building materials. It is weather- and frost- resistant.Insects and fungus do not attack and damage it. Due to its excellent physical and mechanical properties,it is one of the most important basic materials in lightweight building.

Moisture content in transportation

Similarly to wood material in natural condition, the Betonyp building board will take equilibriummoisture content according to the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere.

The moisture content during transportation is u=9± 3 % which is reached at hygroscopic equilibriumcondition corresponding to a temperature of 20º C and a relative humidity of 50-60%.

It can be stated that the compression strength and bending strength decrease considerably due to anincrease in moisture content. The tensile, shear and impact-breaking strength slightly change under theinfluence of moisture content. The impact-breaking strength, unlike other strength properties, improves slightly due to an increase in moisture content. Obviously, it results from the fact that thehollows are filled up with incompressible water to an increasing degree.

Basic principles of machining

Machining of Betonyp building board requires the use of carbide tipped tools.Traditional (iron, chrome-vanadium) hand-held tools can also be used for machining. However, the toolwear will increase in this case. The use of metallurgical tools, such as metal saws and metal borers, also facilitates manual processing. It is recommended to provide for dust exhaustion of appropriate efficiency, when machining Betonypbuilding boards.Favorable edge quality and improved edge durability can be obtained by using carbide tipped saw bladesas shown in the figure below. A-form and straight tooth types are arranged alternately.

Fixing of the Betonyp building boards

The cement-bonded chipboards can be fixed by pneumatic and manual nailing, spiral nailing, screwingand pneumatic clamping. When assembling structures, the following recommendations should beconsidered in connection with fixing:Before manual nailing and screwing holes should be prebored.

Degree of preboring: for nailing d = 0,8 x diameter nail shankfor screwing d = 11,1 x diameter of screw

Figure 9: required fixing distances

Figure shows the required fixing distances for the most frequently applied board thicknesses. The fixing distances at corners are to be selected so that excessive weakening of cross section may notoccur. It is recommended to apply screwed fixing for boards with more than 16 mm thickness.

Storing of the Betonyp boards

Proper storage: The boards should be stacked by placing them on dry, square supporting timber. Toavoid deflection, intermediate supports should be provided. The total board length should be supportedwith supporting timbers placed at least at four points with uniform spacing. The stack should beprotected against dust and moisture with canvas or foil. The stacks should also be protected againstsoil moisture.Avoid storage of boards on the edge.

Floor constructions of Cement Bonded Particleboard

Cement bonded particleboard is a suitable material for floor constructions, e.g. access floor as well as hollow floor on joist. Thefloor panels can be tongue&grooved to obtain a flat surface for various floor coverings. In floors, mainly sanded panels areused.

The cement bonded particleboard is also suitable for covering an existing wooden floor. If the old boards are even, 12 mm thickpanels can be used. Otherwise it is better to use at least 18 mm thickness. Floating floor (on dry filling, hard mineral wool orpolystyrene) is recommended for very uneven underfloor.

The fact that the board is rot-resistant enables all floor coverings whichstop air from penetrating them to be used, such as linoleum, plastic floorcoverings, foambacked carpets, etc. Also moisture held in the flooris absorbed by the boards and can slowly evaporate without havingany adverse affect on the boards themselves.

Underfloor heating systems:Before laying the coverings on the floor made of cement bondedparticleboard, it is advisable to have the underfloor heating systemoperating for at least one week beforehand. The residual moisturein panel will evaporate more quickly.Boards should be laid without fixing. Prime the boards on bothsides and at the edges.

ElamForm bent panels are used in inner or outer wallcorners and in junction of wall and ceiling. Pilasters oreven corrugated panels can be made.

Combination of ElamForm, Elam Panels and acousticpanels gives many possibilities for special effects ininterior design.

ElamForm- panels are laminated of special quality MDF-board.Total thickness is 12 mm as a rule, but otherthicknesses are possible as well. The panels can be woodveneered with every commercial wood species andlacquered. The grain direction of surface veneer can bethe same as the bending direction or perpendicular to it.The final surface can be either on concave or on convex,or on both sides of the panel.

Straight edges can be grooved for fixing profiles whennecessary.

MDF base panels are not fire classified. However, whenmixed with fire retardant Elam -panels, ElamForm canstill be used in buildings where fire regulations set limitsfor the use of wooden surfaces. Local building or fireauthorities are to decide to which extent ElamForm canbe used.

ElamFacade board

ElamFacade board is suitable both for new buildings and renovation of old buildings. Using differentcolors or combining ElamFacade with other building materials, makes architecturally distinguishedpermanent facades possible. The base material of ElamFacade is fire and weather resistant cementbonded particleboard. It is coated with special coating similar to lime plaster.

Mounting

ElamFacade boards can be installed either on wood assembly with ringshanked nails or on a steel framework with screws of stainless steel. The battens should consist of e.g. 22 x 70 mm wooden boards. Thebattens have two important functions: They serve as a base onto whichthe boards can be fastened. They allow space for ventilation -whichmust be at least 22 mm- between the board and the surface of theboard. It is important that the air can pass freely behind the facadeboard.

Notes:

There must always be a cavity of at least 22 mm behind the board forventilation.

Machining:

ElamFacade is best cut with a circularsaw with carbide-tipped blades.

Part 8 Page 5

The acoustical design is important in large buildings, such as arenas, concert halls, etc. Both speechintelligibility and background noise control have to be maintained. The room has to "tune" for desiredpurposes. The transfer of speech or music signals from performers to listeners in the room has to beoptimized. Sound absorbing materials, which have high absorption at an arbitrary specified frequencyband, are often needed in architectural acoustics. In such cases some resonator-type absorbers, such asperforated boards with circular holes or slit panels with air cavities, are widely used. To get high absorptionat not only specific but also other frequencies by such panels, some porous material like fiberglass mayalso be filled in the air cavity.Acoustic panels can be used for acoustical or architectural reasons. The combination of perforated andplain Elam -panels makes it possible to find right solution for music and speech acoustics. Perforatedpanels are diffusors and plain reflectors. Wooden surface gives the panel good reflection properties - like amusical instrumentSound reduction technology in buildings is based on two parts: sound isolation and sound absorption.

When good sound insulation between two rooms is necessary, the wall construction has to be thick, heavyand tight. A perfect sound absorber has a Sound Absorption Coefficient of one, while a perfect reflector hasan coefficient of zero. Proper sound absorption has influence to:

Reverberation time of the room, andSound reduction

Perforated (as well as slotted) Elam acoustic panels function as resonance muffler being at their most effectwith medium and low frequencies. Behind the panel has to be an air gap to ensure flawless function.

The sound absorption of acoustic panels depends on:Hole area:

The larger the hole area, the higher absorption with medium frequency.Distance from background:

Longer distance makes the curve more even.Mineral wool behind the panel:

Mineral wool makes the absorption curve more even. Thin plastic sheet can be used behindthe panel if necessary.

Total equivalent absorption area of a room is calculated by summarizing the absorption of all surfaces, furniture, etc.

"Sabines formula": T = 0,16 x V/A A= x area

T = Reverberation time (s)

V = volume of the room (m )

A = total absorption area (m ) (= sound absorption coefficient

With this formula and the earlier diagrams the necessary area of Elam- acoustic panels can be evaluated inround figures for various room types.

Example:A meeting room, length 10 m, breadth 5 m, height 3 m.

Part 9 Page 1

Storing:

ELAM -boards should be stored inside in dry conditions protected from the sun light. The boards mustnot be stored in conditions under which the humidity considerably differs from final use.

The boards should be stored horizontally on a level base. Wood supports must be placed quite close toeach other (recommendation 400...600 mm distance) to prevent bending of the boards. Avoid storingthe boards on the edge. Don't glide the veneered panels against each other. Lift large panels as shownin the picture.

Machining:

Normal wood machining methods are suitable for ELAM -boards. The boards should be sawn with ahard metal (carbide) tipped blade. To avoid break-out of the surface a dense-toothed blade should beused for sawing of coated boards. Holes for wall plugs and switches should be made with a hard metaltipped key hole saw, an adjustable hole cutter or a jig saw. Sawing can create dust, which may beinconvenient for continuous sawing work. To make the work more comfortable the use of a sawequipped with dust removal or the use of a light face mask is recommended.

Page 53: TECHNICAL MANUAL - Wood Products...BETONYP -cement bonded particleboard Floor constructions Through colored panels Other Elam-solutions: ElamForm -curved panels Elam-facade board ElamTrellis

Part 9 Page 2

Cleaning:

Safety:

After installation the panel surfaces must be cleaned with a slightly moisten cloth. Dirt can beremoved with cleanser made for lacquered wood surfaces. Be careful with some strong cleansers. If the lacquered surface is still dusty and dull, you can use cotton oil to restore beautiful silky gloss.Cotton oil must be handled with care, bacause there is a danger of self ignition of cloths used forspreading.

Cement bonded particleboard consists of wood particles and Portland cement. The board includes noasbestos or formaldehyde. The dust formed during the cutting of the board is alkaline. When alkalis come into contact withwater or sweat, they can irritate the skin and respiratory organs. Because of this irritating effect andwood particles in the dust, we recommend the use of suitable respirators, gloves and dust-tightgoggles if the dust level in air exceeds the value 5 mg/l.

Cement bonded particleboard meets all the requirements for biological and ecological buildingmaterial in Germany.
