While at the School of Image Arts, you will handle chemicals, electrical fixtures and expensive electronic equipment. You will receive training and information that will provide you with the knowledge you need to manage the many aspects of attending a hands-on program at a downtown university campus. For information on personal safety, equipment hazards, theft and insurance, see the section on Taking Precautions.

This is a detailed guide to the equipment and facilities available to students and the policies governing their use and is intended to make working in the School of Image Arts a little easier. All the information contained in this booklet is relevant and will get you off to a good start. Please read it thoroughly so as to become familiar with all policies, rules and penalties. Understanding how the technical services are provided will allow you to complete your course work without any setbacks..This guide and the technical staff are here to help you navigate the school and make the most out of our equipment and facilities.

IMA Equipment Cage 6845 / 6867 Motion Picture Lab 6869

Equipment Cage Hours and Location Students gain access to equipment and facilities through what is known as the ‘Cage’. It is located in the basement of the Image Arts Building, IMA B-18. Equipment and facility keys for student and faculty use are located in the IMA Equipment Cage, in the basement of the Image Arts Building (IMA B-18). This includes a wide variety of digital and analogue cameras and accessories, still and video equipment, electronic flash and lighting accessories, digital and analogue projection equipment, sound recording systems, film stock and editing supplies, keys for all labs, studios and classrooms. There are special booking periods for certain film and video production equipment. The cage is open when classes are in session and during Fall and Winter Study Weeks. Please note the Cage is closed during exam periods, on statutory holidays and during the December break.

Although the School of Image Arts regularly maintains all equipment and facilities, it is the responsibility of each student to test the apparatus upon issuance. The School of Image Arts does not take responsibility for lost and/or damaged materials used in conjunction with Image Arts equipment. Cage Access Your Ryerson One Card is required to access labs and equipment relevant to your production courses. Access will not be granted without this card. Each student must present their own One Card when signing out equipment or facility keys. One Cards can be picked up through the Registrar’s Office (bring your fees statement and timetable). At the start of your first year of studies you must register into the Cage Access System. Each student must complete a Technical Operations Agreement Form, which indicates that you have read and will follow the policies outlined in this handbook. Note: The Cage will need a copy of your Ryerson WHMIS Certificate for you to be granted access to equipment and facilities.

Procedure Every transaction with the Cage will require the use of your One Card. Your card will be scanned into the computer when you reserve, take out or return equipment. You are responsible for presenting your card with every transaction. Transactions will not be made without it.

Responsibi lity When you take equipment from the Cage, you are entering into a contract which states: “I accept responsibility for loss of or damage to the equipment while on loan to me and agree to return it on or before the date and time indicated.” This agreement is binding, therefore please be sure to care for your equipment and keep track of your exact return time when planning your work. It may help to remember that other students

will be waiting to use the equipment or facility you have signed out and are relying on you to return it on time and in working order.

Returning Late If unavoidable circumstances make it impossible to return equipment on time, you are expected to notify the appropriate cage before your return time. Depending upon circumstances you may be granted extra time to return your order. Calling does not relieve you of your responsibility for being late. This allows the cage to plan around these circumstances. If you fail to inform the cage beforehand of your late return, penalties will be implemented. Only the Cage Manager can authorize extensions to equipment or facility loans.

Checking Equipment Although Cage staff checks equipment when it is returned, there is no absolute guarantee that equipment is in perfect working order when you receive it. You are expected to thoroughly check all equipment and lab facilities upon issuance. If you find any problems during this check, you must inform the Cage within twenty minutes of signing out the equipment or facility. It is in your best interest to check equipment near the cage (on the tables provided) or, in the case of labs, immediately upon issuance. You will not ordinarily be held responsible for equipment or facility problems reported within twenty minutes of being signed out.

Reporting Broken or Lost Equipment In order to keep all equipment and facilities in working order and circulation, we need to know about any malfunctions, damages or loss immediately. When you report lost or damaged equipment, the Cage Staff will fill out an Equipment Malfunction Report (EMR). You will be notified shortly of any cost associated with this loss or damage. Students with unpaid bills will have their grade reports withheld (see the section on Fines and Penalties for more information).

To ensure smooth running of technical operations, there are certain penalties in effect instated by the school. Keep these penalties in mind when using facilities and equipment.

Fine Payment Fines must be paid immediately. Your access will be suspended until the fine is paid.

Suspension All access to equipment, facilities and Motion Picture Lab is suspended.

No Show A $10 fine will be levied for failing to cancel a reservation. Hit and Run A $10 fine will be levied for equipment and/or facility keys left unattended at the cage or failing to remain at the Cage until the Cage staff has cleared your order. Late Returns

Fees will be levied for equipment and/or facility keys that are late. Fees are based upon number of items out, length of lateness and the demand for the equipment/key. Please report unavoidable lateness to the respective cage before due time. This does not excuse the lateness or guarantee extension. For more details on the Late Return Policy please visit the Cage.

Lost or Damaged Equipment The cost for repairs or replacement of equipment and/or parts will be calculated on a case-by-case basis according to industry prices. The bill must be paid by a set deadline decided by a Cage Technician or the Operations Manager.

Lost Facil ity Key A $50 fine will be levied for replacement of the key in addition to re-key charges (if necessary).

Leaving Facil ity Key in Door or Leaving Facil ity Door Unlocked. A $10 fine will be levied.

Food or Drinks in Lab, Studio, Darkroom or Edit ing Suite A $20 fine will be levied for the first offence. A $20 fine and one week suspension from the facility will be levied for the second offence.

Leaving Water Running in Unattended Labs One week suspension from Lab and $10 plus payment of all expenses incurred in repairing water damage (if applicable) will be levied.

Failure to Report a Processing Machine Jam One week suspension from processor and restricted access to the cage. Failure to Clean Studio, Lab or Sound Stage Minor infractions will cost $5 – $10. Major infractions can cost up to two weeks suspension from facility and payment of all expenses incurred to return facility to proper condition.

Inappropriate Storage/Labelling of Chemicals $20 fine and one week suspension. Grades will be held at the end of term if chemistry is not removed from the school or disposed of correctly and/or not correctly labeled.

Damage to Facility The cost for repairs will be calculated on a case-by-case basis. Infractions can cost up to two weeks suspension from facility that was damaged and payment of all expenses incurred to return facility to proper condition. Reduction of Penalt ies

Only the Cage Technicians or the Operations Manager can reduce penalties. Student employees cannot change penalties.

Grade Withhold The final grade report is withheld until outstanding fines, processing bills and/or damaged equipment bills are paid. All unpaid fines are subject to grade withholds. Grade withholds will be submitted to the Registrar on the first business day following exams. An administration fee of $25 over and above unpaid bills will also be charged.

REMINDER: Food and drinks are not allowed in any studios, labs, darkrooms or editing rooms in the School of Image Arts.

Access to equipment and facilities is gained through in-class workshops or with the appropriate instructor’s approval. In general, access to equipment and labs is based on enrolment in specific courses, programs or program years. Labs that are signed out until the end of the evening must be returned at least fifteen minutes before the Cage closing time. AA NN AA LL OO GG UU EE PP HH OO TT OO GG RR AA PP HH YY LL AA BB SS

During the day and evening, analogue photography labs are reserved for specific classes. Spare labs are released thirty minutes after a scheduled class commences. At this point, students who are not in the scheduled class are allowed to sign out unused facilities. When there is no class scheduled, these facilities are free to students with access on a first-come, first-served basis. All darkrooms come with a printing kit that is signed out from the Cage. The kit contains three lenses (50mm, 80mm and 135mm) and three negative carriers (35mm, 6x6 and 4x5). Other negative carriers are available from the cage. Note: Safety Orientation - Access is granted to labs, studios or equipment only after the student has attended a Student Safety Orientation (usually held during the first week of classes).

Film Loading and Processing Darkrooms IMA 123 – 129 Access: All Photography students with appropriate clearance from instructor. Student must sign out facility key from the Cage.

Advanced and Historical Darkrooms IMA B03, B08 Access: Second, third, fourth year and MFA students who have attended a Student Safety Orientation with Technical Staff.

For ecological and financial reasons, black and white fixer (hypo) must be used according to the following rules:

• ALWAYS RE-USE FIXER UNTIL IT BECOMES EXHAUSTED. Use hypo-check to verify that fixer is still usable. Used fixer will not have any detrimental effects on film or paper.

• NEVER POUR USED FIX DOWN THE DRAIN. There is a fix recovery container on the first floor (IMA 121, IMA B-03, IMA B-08). Pour all exhausted b/w fix (no colour fix or other chemicals) into this container. All exhausted fix is processed to remove silver before it is discarded. Fix treated in this way is less polluting to the environment.

Retouch Room – Mat Cutting and Colour Viewing Facility IMA 122 Mat cutting, print mounting, colour balancing, slide viewing and slide mounting facility. Access: All Image Arts students. (Classes have priority.) PP RR II NN TT PP RR OO CC EE SS SS II NN GG MM AA CC HH II NN EE SS

B&W Processing Machine/South Viewing Room IMA 135 Black and white resin coated (RC) printing. No fibre-based paper. Black-&-white film processing. Access: All Stills and Media students.

PP HH OO TT OO GG RR AA PP HH YY SS TT UU DD II OO IMA 210 This is a large studio space which can have up to 20 students working simultaneously. The studio is supplied with a variety of both tungsten and electronic flash systems, as well as professional softboxes such as Broncolor Hazy Lights. The studio contains a Cove, or seamless “cyc” wall, which is a partitioned area of the studio that allows students to do portraiture and fashion-related photography. All students in the Image Arts program have access to these studios; they also serve as a working space for students to show their work in critiques that are an integral part of their production courses. Access: All Undergraduate and Graduate students who have undergone the Studio Safety Orientation. Classes have priority. Spare bays are released thirty minutes after a scheduled class commences if the instructor gives permission. At this point, students who are not in the scheduled class are allowed to sign out unused facilities. When there is no class scheduled, the bays are free to students with access on a first-come, first-served basis. All bays are signed out from the Cage. You must sign out a bay from the Cage before using one. Further Information about Photography Studio Policy and Procedures available at the Cage. PP HH OO TT OO GG RR AA PP HH II CC II MM AA GG II NN GG CC EE NN TT RR EE IMA 233 The PIC facility houses photographic quality inkjet printers that can produce test prints and up to 13x19 prints. Students bring their digital files to this facility and print themselves. Note: There is a charge for all prints made. There is a price list posted at the facility. Also available are high end film scanners, allowing students in all three undergraduate and graduate programs, to scan film, both positive (slides) and negative, in all formats from 35mm to 8x10. Students wanting to use this facility must take a scheduled workshop first before they will be allowed access. Once you have taken the workshop your name will be added to our “scanner list” of eligible students. Access to PIC is done by a booking procedure where you simply email PIC and ask for the time(s) you would like to scan. Your requests will be answered by return email usually the same day. PIC’s email address: [email protected] Hours of Operation: A schedule will be posted at the beginning of each term. Access: 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year Image Arts students and graduate students.

Film Writing Centre IMA 230 Digital files can be output to slides or negatives in 35mm and 4x5 film formats. Note: There is a nominal charge for this service.

Digital Printing Facility IMA 230 This facility provides photographic quality inkjet prints on a variety of different papers, in cut sheet sizes and roll format. The facility contains a number of large format printers capable of producing prints up to mural size. Students can bring their digital files to this facility and have their images output to a number of different paper surfaces. Please note that students do not print the files themselves. Note: There is a charge for all prints made. A price list is posted at the facility. You are welcome to come by during our open hours and we will be glad to answer any questions you may have about papers, file specifications and price. Payment for prints is handled two ways: 1) Through a voucher called a PIC Voucher, which you can obtain from the Cash Office in Jorgenson Hall. 2) Through the use of your ONE CARD. There is no cash or credit. Prints are only given out upon receipt of payment. Note: To load funds in your card, a ONE CARD deposit machine is conveniently located beside the Cage, IMA B-18. Hours of Operation: A schedule will be posted at the beginning of each term. Access: All Image Arts Students CC OO MM PP UU TT EE RR LL AA BB SS FCAD Graphics Lab (IMA 234) 35 iMac stations with five flatbed scanners. Access: All students in the Faculty of Communication and Design. FF II LL MM AA NN DD EE DD II TT II NN GG FF AA CC II LL II TT II EE SS

At many times during the day and evening, film editing labs are reserved for specific classes. The ‘half-hour rule’ occurs when spare labs are released thirty minutes after a scheduled class commences. At this point, students who are not in the scheduled class are allowed to sign out unused facilities. When there is no class scheduled, these facilities are

free to students with access on a first-come, first-served basis. All lab keys are signed out from the Cage. Labs may be reserved in advance (with the exception of linear editing benches and the flatbed station), though classes have priority. All labs not reserved in advance are subject to availability. Please note that if you have not used the space by the first half hour of your booking, another student may take it and you will be penalized as a ‘no-show’ (see the section on Fines and Penalties for more information).

Junior Film Editing Room IMA 321 16mm editing benches with lockers including a splicer and film viewer. Access: All Film and New Media students.

Non-linear Digital Editing Suites IMA 338 – 346, 349 All suites include one G5 with editing capability, M-box and network connectivity. Students must supply their own portable hard drive. A 500GB Hard drive with Firewire 400 port is highly recommended as a minimum. Students will be able to import, edit and burn projects to DVD or Blue Ray discs. Students will also provide their own headphones for this facility. The facilities are booked through the Equipment Cage when classes permit. Access: All Film and New Media students.

MM OO TT II OO NN PP II CC TT UU RR EE LL AA BB IMA 327 Extension 6869

This facility houses a black and white motion picture film processor, a 16mm printer, a dark loading room, and film to digital transfer service. The film processor is temporarily unavailable; all 16mm processing and printing is done at an outside Lab. In-house 16mm digital transfer service – from negative or positive - is available. Services and Fees The lab offers: normal negative processing, pushed processing (overdeveloped to compensate for underexposure), pulled processing (underdevelopment to compensate for overexposure), work printing or process only. Other services include: high contrast processing and printing, preparation for transfer, and transfer, etc. Please see the lab flyer for details and prices. NOTE: Super 16mm is considered a special process and must be clearly indicated on the envelope..

Ryerson Motion Picture Lab Order Envelope Film processing envelopes are available at the Cage, and are stamped by the Cage. Make sure your name, student number and year are printed onto each envelope you use. This indicates to the lab that you are entitled to student prices. Fill it out clearly and entirely – including contact information --, as incomplete information may delay your order.

• If you have pushed or pulled your film, the ‘ASA Used’ box

should reflect this. For example, Plus-X negative – normally rated at 80 ASA daylight -- pushed one stop would mean that the ASA is 160. You should also state this change by checking ‘push one stop’ in the ‘Special Instructions’ section. Make sure you understand the principles behind pushing (and pulling) film before you try it, or ask at the Lab.

• Use only one envelope for all rolls that are to be processed the same way (same stock and ASA). Plastic Ziploc bags are available near the Lab drop box. Use these for multiple rolls with the Ryerson envelope inside.

• The “Digital Transfer” “New Work Print” section is for films that have already come back from the Lab. They require 3 feet of head & tail leader, clearly marked with your name, film title, and “head” and “tail”. We use this for identification. Leave the ‘Film Type’ and ‘ASA Used’ boxes empty and state whether the transfer is from negative or work print, and how many feet.

The following is an example of the envelope you will receive from the Cage. Your name, course, year, section, customer ID and student number should already be printed onto the envelope. You will need to fill in the rest. Use this example as a guide. For more information regarding film processing please pick up a pamphlet from IMA 327 or the Cage.

You can drop off your film in the Lab drop-box any time the building is open, but the film is only picked up twice a week -- at 8 am on Monday and Wednesday -- and shipped to an outside Lab. Anything handed in after the deadline goes on the next available date.

Processing Schedule Because orders are processed and printed at an outside Lab, it is important to meet the 8 am deadlines in order for the film to be back in time for your class, add an extra day for orders that require digital transfers. If you do not drop your film off by 8:00am -– and you need work print -- you run the risk of falling up to four days behind. Digital Transfers Transfers are usually scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays. Please check with the lab before dropping off your transfer order. Orders not properly set up with head and tail leader may be returned or a fee charged. fixed and movable lighting grids, a Colourtran programmable lighting board, 9 floor-to-ceiling sound-baffling travelers, an Arri articulated camera dolly, a 20” x 15” projection screen, a 40” moveable scaffolding, a film loading room and a full complement of props and 8”x4” flats and set pieces. There is a complete supply of lights, stands and ancillaries and a fully equipped set construction workshop adjacent to the sound stage. The Sound Stage is a bookable facility available to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students who have completed the Sound Stage Safety Orientation Seminar. Students must complete a Sound Stage Application prior to booking this space for periods greater than 1 day. Scheduled classes, including Continuing Education courses, retain priority during Sound Stage use. Additional training is required for use of the Scaffolding, Camera Dolly, Lighting Grids, and Colourtrans. Electrical Safety rules, proper rigging practices, appropriate set construction and general sound stage discipline must be observed at all times. Recording and Mixing Studio (IMA 302) Multi-track digital recording and mixing facilities including a professional studio and a Foley Pit. Space is booked through the Equipment Cage when classes permit, for 3rd and 4th year Film and New Media students. Note that part of this area is undergoing renovations and will be closed until January 2013. The facilities are signed out by students through the Equipment Cage when classes permit and are not booked for special presentations.

IMA 305 This facility contains woodworking equipment and tools that can be used for the construction of set pieces, installations, etc. It is open under supervision one day per week. Access is available to all Image Arts students who have completed a mandatory Workshop Orientation. Power equipment and tools must be used as directed by the Image Arts Workshop Technician. Students must have an official orientation to the tools and safety procedures. All tools and equipment are solely the property of the Workshop, therefore they may not be removed from the facility. Hours of Operation: A schedule will be posted at the beginning of each term. The following technical support staff operates this facility: Joseph Lammirato, Workshop Technician, IMA 305. First Floor Student Study Lounge IMA 100 – 106 This is a shared student space with Wi-Fi access, work tables and comfortable seating, so feel free to use the space and make it your own. Student Meeting Galleries Three study areas are located at the northeast/northwest corners on the 2nd floor of the IMA building, as well as the northeast corner on the 3rd floor. The spaces include smart boards (large screen monitors) for students to use for demos, post-production and works-in-progress. Contact the Cage to gain access for the smart boards. The Pit IMA B 20C The Pit is an open space located across the Cage for students and professors to use for study sessions and class demonstrations.

Equipment Hazards It is mandatory that you attend all in-class workshops offering training on equipment that you will need to complete your course work. Specialty workshops are available for non-course specific equipment. For your protection and the protection of others, you cannot sign out equipment without the appropriate clearance. Training is crucial, as certain equipment such as studio lighting could seriously injure you or someone else if used improperly. If you damage something, you are responsible for the cost of repairs and you will lose access to Cage privileges until payment is received. It is important that all students read and understand the section on Property and Liability Insurance in this handbook.

In addition to the specific hands-on training, you will be taught general guidelines for safety that are equally important. Guidelines include things like how to safely position a tripod, lay down cables or raise and lower the height of studio lights without crushing your hand, you will avoid many accidents in the future. The following are some safety precautions to keep in mind when using equipment: • Never use equipment you have not been instructed on or may be un-

familiar with. • Always inspect equipment for damage (e.g. exposed wires) before

using. • Do not attempt to repair broken or damaged equipment. Report any

problems to a qualified technician or to the cage.

Chemicals Image Arts is a studio based program and you will be working with various substances that could be harmful to your health if not used properly. It is your responsibility that your work environment is safe as the majority of chemicals you will come in contact with will be your own. All Image Arts students are required to complete the Ryerson WHMIS Training and obtain a Ryerson WHMIS certificate. All hazardous substances brought into the school must have a current WHMIS label. Please see your instructor for technical staff for more details. Keep your work area clean and organized to reduce accidental spills or splashes. Each darkroom area is equipped with an emergency eye wash kit that works quickly to alleviate eye or skin damage if splashing does occur. Read the instructions ahead of time so you know what to do if it ever happens to you or someone else in a neighbouring darkroom. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) All chemicals brought into the school must include a valid MSDS to be given to the Health and Safety Technician for inclusion into the MSDS Book (Send a PDF to Mindy at [email protected]). You can check to see if the chemicals you wish to bring into the school already have a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) in the database by going to the Cage and checking the MSDS Book. It is your responsibility to read and understand the MSDS for all chemistry you will be working with. If a substance is not in the MSDS Book you cannot bring it into the Image Arts building until the Safety Technician has OK’d its use. All chemicals that you use or mix MUST be store in appropriate containers and MUST be properly labelled. (Do not use empty juice or water bottles.) You will be fined for using any chemicals that are not labelled correctly or do not have a valid MSDS in the database.

WHMIS Labels All chemicals and cleaners that are brought into the building must be properly labelled. All containers (including water) must be labelled with:

1. Substance's name 2. Ingredient amounts or % 3. Student's or instructor's name 4. Date made or in use 5. Safe handling procedures - e.g. If you need to wear gloves or

use a mask when working with the chemical. 6. Ingredients - (If the solution or mixture has more than one

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), see below) list the

ingredients and the percentage of each ingredient in the solution or mixture.

It is important that all chemicals in the building are properly labelled and that the school has a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for it.

If you would like a PDF of a sheet of different sized labels you can contact the Safety Technician (Mindy) or you can make your own. You will need to cover the labels with packing tape or other clear material to keep them waterproof. STUDIO GUIDELINES Equipment

• Never attempt to use any equipment you have not been instructed on or may be unfamiliar with.

• Always inspect all equipment for damage before using. (exposed wires, etc)

• Report any damaged or broken equipment immediately to a technician or to the cage. Do not attempt to repair equipment yourself.

• Broken lights are to be placed in the ‘repair’ areas of the studio. • Know where the machine emergency shut-off is located for all

processors and shop equipment. Use the shut-off immediately if you suspect a problem, and then have a technician check the situation. Technicians can be paged from the cage or front office at any time.

• When in doubt, use the emergency shut-off. You will not be penalized for being overly cautious! If there is no emergency shut-off contact the Cage immediately.

• No spray painting or spray glues anywhere in the IMA building • No sanding with power tools except in the Workshop • Clean up all paint/chemical spills and splashes – even small ones • Read the WHMIS label and Material Safety Data Sheet for any

chemical you are using and make sure you take precautions to protect yourself and those around you. E.g. mask, designated ventilated area, work outside

• Keep your work area clean – keep dust, dirt, scents and materials that might react when mixed to a minimum

The Photo Studio (IMA 210) and Sound Stage Safety (IMA 301)

• Do not work alone. • No food or drink • No open flames, toxic substances or dangerous materials are

allowed. (No fog machines are to be used in the Still’s studio as they will set off the fire alarm)

• Animals used as subjects, models or props must be controlled at all times

• Children are allowed in the studio as models but only if they are supervised at all times by a caregiver other than the photographer

• Exercise caution when using stepladders, ladders and the platform ladder as the floor may be slippery. Use the ‘buddy system’ when using elevation devices.

• Flats are top heavy and very prone to tipping over if pushed from the back. Move from the ends and near the bottom. Use two people when moving the large flats, and use extreme caution when moving any flat. If it starts to tip – step back! You will not be penalized for accidental damage incurred while observing safe studio procedures.

• Sandbag all lights and booms that will be extended above 5’. • Broken lights and other studio equipment are to be placed within

the ‘Repair Area' in the Studio with a Equipment Malfunction Report (EMR) attached

• Never move lights or booms unless the stands are completely lowered

• Never sit or place heavy objects on studio light tables • Never place studio ‘hot’ lights under the light tables – they melt • Do not hang anything from pipes overhead • Note the difference between the "hot" soft box lights, the "hot"

spotlights and the "cool" Kino Flo - VistaBeam lights. The Mole-Richardson lights get extremely hot!

• Use heavy work gloves when redirecting the ‘hot’ lights • Do not place the lights near flammable material or plastic • Watch your fingers or hands when working with the stands or

booms. Do not hold onto the inner extension pole of stands. • Have the electrical cord go down the stand and under legs, so

that when the cord is pulled, it pulls the light into the floor and does not pull it over.

• Use extension cords and avoid tripping hazards. There should not be any tension on electrical cords or plugs. “No dangling in the wind or looking like a clothes line.”

• Do not use tape of any kind on the hot lights - use wooden clothespins or metal clamps

• Always lower the lights and roll up the cables when finished. (Coil cords starting from the light-head)

• Remove all tape from equipment when finished • If you don’t know – ASK • SPECIAL INSTRUCTION REQUIRED FOR ELECTRONIC

Sound Stage (IMA 301) – additional safety precautions

• Proper use of the scaffold (outriggers, brakes and safety harness) must be understood and strictly adhered to.

jacks and sandbags. • Knowledge of the safe and proper use of the grid is required.

Never stand below the moveable grid as it is being raised or lowered. Safety chains must be used to secure lights hung from the grid. Barn doors must also be attached to the grid or the light.

• Proper use of the scaffold (outriggers, brakes and safety harness) must be understood and strictly adhered to.

• A basic understanding of electrical power and the dangers of equipment misuse is required. (breakers, lights, electrical distribution boxes, etc.)

• Knowledge of grip equipment is required before use. Darkrooms and other areas where using chemicals

• No food or drink • Know how to use chemicals safely. • Wear Personal Protective Equipment and clothing as needed. • Never leave water running unattended • Know where the Eye Wash Station is and how to use it • Know how to dispose of chemicals correctly • When in complete darkness whistle, hum or make some kind of

outdoors. • No soldering in any room except Soldering Studio, IMA 335. • Use appropriate ladders when installing or hanging work. Do not

stand on chairs, stools or tables. • Check all cords for damage. • No cord octopi (multiple cords plugged into each other). • Clean up all debris and spills immediately.

Studio Maintenance These rooms will be inspected weekly. If not kept clean and orderly, after-hours access will be restricted.

• Remove all personal items from studios at the end of your work period.

• Return all Image Arts equipment and supplies to its storage area or the Cage.

• Store all wood neatly in the wood bins. • Vacuum and clean all work areas at the end of every work

period. • Clean up all debris and spills and dispose properly into garbage

bins provided. • Do not leave tape on the floor, furniture or walls. • Cover the floor when painting or using messy materials. • Do not make holes in the walls. • Hang work only from the Grid. • Empty the Shop Vac into a green garbage bag at the end of each

week. Fourth Year Production Studio (IMA 322) Access to 4th year students only

• Student must take a Safety Orientation Workshop to receive clearance to access.

• Once cleared, students may sign out a room key from the Equipment Cage.

New Media Soldering Room (IMA 335) This room is for soldering and clean manufacturing only.

• Student must take soldering training to receive clearance to access.

• Once cleared, students may sign out a room key from the Equipment Cage.

• No food or drink allowed. • Solder only in a well-ventilated area & avoid breathing the

smoke. Use fans to direct smoke away from face. Heated flux will release fumes that are harmful to eyes and lungs.

• Avoid touching face and always wash your hands after soldering, especially before eating! Chemicals in the flux can be harmful to your health

• When soldering use eye protection – hot solder easily splashes. Goggles are available from the Equipment cage.

• Clean up all debris and remove all personal items from studios at the end of your work period. Return all Image Arts equipment and supplies to its storage area or the Cage.

New Media Installation Studio (IMA 323)

• Do not make holes in the walls. You are responsible for patching and painting any holes you make.

• Hang work only from the wall rails using s-hooks, wire, etc. • Use appropriate ladders when installing or hanging work. Do not

stand on chairs, stools or tables. • Special requests to attach work directly to wall must be approved

by your instructor and Operations staff.

Fire Safety If you see, smell, or hear a fire: •Pull the closest fire alarm. •Dial “80” from a safe location on any campus telephone. •Close all doors. •Ensure doors and exits are clear, do not block doors. •Leave the building immediately by the nearest safe exit. •Exit by stairwells; do not use elevators. •Assist people with disabilities or children, as required. •Wait outside the building as directed by Security or the Fire Wardens.

Personal Safety There could be times when you find yourself working in the building while there are very few people around and you may have concerns for your personal safety. A downtown campus such as Ryerson does tend to attract the occasional wanderer to its buildings and in spite of regular checks by Campus Security, the reality is that at times it is quite easy for an outsider to walk in unnoticed. It doesn’t happen very often but when it does, it is usually just a case of someone trying to get out of the cold. To

be on the safe side, keep these tips in mind when working in the building during irregular hours:

• Whenever possible, do not work alone. • Notify cage staff if you see someone suspicious in the building so they

can investigate or call Campus Security. • Know where the nearest telephone is. All phones in the building

indicate the numbers for Campus Security in case of emergencies and non-emergencies.

• Use your common sense. If someone who doesn’t appear to belong in the building asks for your help, refer the person to the cage or find someone near your work area to go with you.

Walk Safe Program This service provides Ryerson's community with a protected escort by security officers or supervisors 24 hours a day to any location on the Ryerson campus, to the Dundas subway or to a number of parking lots off campus. To request an escort, call security at 979-5040 or by pressing the yellow button on any campus payphone or ext.5040 from any internal phone.

Theft Theft of personal or borrowed school property has unfortunately been known to happen. DO NOT leave your belongings unattended at any time anywhere in the building. Avoid storing valuable equipment in your locker overnight or over weekends. If you see someone suspicious, or anyone who seems to be paying a little too much attention to you and/or the contents of your locker, call Campus Security. Lockers Lockers are situated in the basement and the 3rd floor of the IMA building. They are free and available to use for all Image Arts students for the duration of one school year. Note that items and locks must be removed from your locker at the end of the winter academic term. Any locks left after April 30 will be cut off and the contents discarded. Bike Theft | Vandalism Bikes left overnight or even until a late hour in front of the School are at high risk for theft or vandalism. Leaving it in other areas of campus that are more populated at night may at least reduce the risk and alternating spots is a good idea if you tend to follow a routine. If you see theft in progress or if it happens to you, report it immediately to Campus Security.

Bicycle Room The Bicycle Room offers students, faculty and staff a secure indoor facility to park or store their bicycles. It is located behind 110 Bond Street and can be reached by the laneway from Bond and Dundas Streets or through the pathway around Lake Devo and the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. The Room features 65 vertical rack spaces, bicycle pumps, lights and security cameras and is regularly patrolled by Ryerson Security. It can be accessed with your One Card during the hours of 6:30 am to 11 pm, seven days a week. The permits are free of charge and are issued on a first come first served basis at the beginning of each academic year. To apply for a permit, complete the on-line permit application. For further information, please contact University Business Services at 416 – 979 – 5008. Parking If you are planning on driving to the School on a regular basis, or even just occasionally on days when you want to pick up or drop off equipment, don’t even think about leaving your car out front unattended. You are almost guaranteed to get a ticket as parking attendants come by as often as every 15 minutes. There are three lots nearby - at Church St and Gould St, Bond St and Dundas St, and Ryerson Parking Garage on Victoria St right behind the Image Arts building. (See the general Student Guide for information on how to obtain a monthly parking pass for this lot). Insurance As a student of Image Arts, whether you are studying Film, Photography or New Media, you will be borrowing and/or accessing highly professional equipment on a regular basis. On the up side, the benefits of borrowing are obvious - it would be impossible for you to personally own even a fraction of the equipment used here and having been trained on it lets you compete in a highly competitive workforce once you graduate. On the down side, every time you sign out a piece of equipment, you are in fact signing a contract to assume full liability in the event of loss, theft or damage. Property Insurance Every student is covered by the same insurance policy at Ryerson. The policy has two components: property and liability. Equipment loss or damage falls under property, which currently has a deductible of $50,000.00. This means that each time you sign out equipment from the Cage, you are responsible for paying the first $50,000.00 for repairs or replacement if that equipment is lost, stolen or damaged.

You may want to talk to an insurance agent about what coverage options may be available. One company that has dealt with our students is CG & B Group Inc. Insurance. Speak to Judy Heron at 905-479-6670 to see what she can do for you. Liability Insurance The liability clause of Ryerson’s policy offers significantly better protection to students in the event of an accident or damage to public or private property while filming or photographing away from campus. For example, you can still be sued if someone trips on a cable that you have placed on a city street while filming but if it can be proven that you are a registered student of Ryerson and that the activity that caused the accident was directly related to course work, you will not be held financially accountable as Ryerson’s insurance policy will cover you. The same is true if an accident occurs while shooting on private property. Should property damage occur and the owner decides to seek retribution, the policy will cover you, again, provided the incident occurred while working on an assignment with the property owner’s permission. Occasionally, you will be asked to produce a Certificate of Insurance from the university as proof that you are a full-time student with coverage in case of accident. Typically, only government or large public-sector organizations such as the TTC will request this from you but a request can come from anyone who is not willing to take your word for it that you are a student with coverage. Whether or not you obtain this Certificate, your coverage is active. If you get a request for a Certificate of Insurance, contact Carrol Scanlan in the Finance Department at ext. 5013. It takes 5 working days to prepare so make sure you notify Carrol as soon as you know you need one. Negligence is inexcusable and costly in any situation, no matter which party ends up ultimately responsible for damages. Liability insurance is there for you in case of accident - it is not a license for you to be careless or to take avoidable risks. If a lawsuit arises from a situation you are involved in, though you may not be held financially accountable, the paperwork and red tape you would be forced to endure in defending yourself would be punishment enough. As a full-time student you don’t have that kind of time and energy to spare so if only for your sake, take all precautions and act responsibly in every situation! Note:

The policy covers equipment used outside of Ontario; however, the Insurance Office must be advised before leaving. Off campus losses must be reported to police immediately in order for the insurer to accept liability. On campus equipment losses must be reported to both Campus Security and Carrol Scanlan in the Finance Office.

SSuurrvv iivvaall TTiippss Orienting Yourself There are floor plans located at the back of this book indicating the location of all classrooms and labs in the building. Feel free to ask for directions from cage staff or technical staff. Completing Assignments Remember that when you have an assignment due, so do a lot of other students. Plan your equipment and facility needs in advance. Do not assume that the cages will always have everything you need. Equipment Failure We cannot guarantee that equipment will not fail, so plan your out-of-town shoots carefully. For local shoots, the cage can often replace or repair a broken item. The rental of any replacement equipment must be at your own expense. Purchasing Supplies and Lab Orders All payments for supplies and lab orders must be made with a Ryerson One Card. These debit-type cards can be serviced at the One Card Office located JOR02 in Jorgenson Hall (on the lower ground floor). Your card can also be serviced (up to a certain amount) using a CVC (Card Value Centre) machine located around campus. The ‘Half-hour Rule’ Labs are often reserved for in-class use, though all lab space is not always occupied by students in a scheduled class. In this case, all other qualified students may use the available facilities beginning thirty minutes after the class has begun. This allows students with priority a chance to get a lab before they are released to all students. Processing Machine Jams or Related Problems Report immediately to the Cage. Lab Lock-Out

Report to the Cage and ask for an available technician. Faculty members also have keys to most labs. Lost Ryerson One Card or Facil ity Key Report to the Cage Manager. Lost or Damaged Equipment Report to the Cage. Unavoidable Lateness If you are stuck in the field with equipment that is due back, call the Cage before the equipment is due and ask for a short extension. Depending on the situation, they can usually allow you enough time to get back.

If you are interested in working while studying at Ryerson, you should visit the Career Centre on the 4th floor in Jorgenson Hall as soon as possible. There you’ll find bulletin boards with listings of available jobs both on and off campus. Several part-time and work-study positions are available throughout IMA, assisting administrative and technical staff in darkrooms and labs, and as teaching and research assistants for faculty members. The Equipment Cage employs students during the regular school year, with most hiring done in Early September. If interested, see one of the Cage Technicians and bring your timetable. The School of Image Arts also maintains a blog that lists mostly one-time casual jobs called into the school from people looking to save money by hiring a student. These jobs often include event photography and videography, such as weddings and corporate gatherings, production assistance for film and photography shoots and more.
