TASK SPECIFICATION SUMMARY

3 3.1 TASK DESCRIPTION

When I joined the Perunding Asas- Jurutera Fajar JV Sdn. Bhd., I was assigned to be at the site for Project Membina Jalan Lencongan Timur Dari Persimpangan Jalan Tun Razak, Alor Star (Phase 1) along the traffic intersection of Jalan Simpang Kuala till the end of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Simpang Kuala. I learned many chores of being an engineer and the applied all the important knowledge that I had acquired while I was studying in my first year till the third year of my Bachelor. These are the entire list task that was assigned to me:

1)Site supervising: The site supervising is a very important job, as I have to be responsible for the running of the work according to the schedule that already done during the planning phase. Site supervisor has to coordinate the contractor, deal with the purchasing and coordination of the purchase of materials, etc.

Figure 1.21: Monitoring the angle of drainage from the pavement to the drain.2)AutoCAD designing: AutoCAD is a software application for computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting. The software supports both 2D and 3D formats. The software is developed and sold by Autodesk Inc. I was assigned to design the detailed beam, the bridge drawing, the pedestrian walk and zebra crossing, the curb designing, the sump designing, drain designing, alteration, etc.

3)Study Engineering Drawing and Project Details: On the very first day, I was assigned to study the drawing and the whole project in order be up to date with the work done at the site. I manage to catch up to up to recent work within the given two days.

Figure 1.24: Studying the Engineering Drawing and the Project details.4)Technical meeting: Technical meeting is the meeting that will be done each 2 weeks in order for the main contractor brief the sub-contractor of the work that needed to be completed and the sub-contractor giving their claim form for the work that they have already completed. As a junior engineer, I gain a large amount of knowledge regarding the progress of work.

Figure 1.25: The technical meeting on the first week I was doing IT.

5)Familiarization of tender contract @ Bill of Quantities: In traditional contracting, a contract document comprising a list of the materials required for the works and their estimated quantities, produced by the quantity surveyor. The contractor tenders against this document, stating his price for supplying and installing each of the materials. I was assigned to recalculate the budget of the project as there were new changes in the method of statement where using the new price value does it. The sample of BQ is attached in the Appendix.

6)Developing Gantt chart and S-curve: The Gantt chart is the most important thing in the planning process, as it will determine the flow of the project as well as the duration of the project. A proper Gantt chart will ensure the project to be done on time as well as proper budget. I was able to check the existing S-curve and check the recent progress with the S-curve. The Gantt chart is attached in the Appendix.

7)Surveying and Detailing: Surveying may be defined as the science of determining the position, in three dimensions, of natural and man-made features on or beneath the surface of the Earth. In engineering surveying, either or both of the above formats may be used for planning, design and construction of works, both on the surface and underground. At a later stage, surveying techniques are used for dimensional control or setting out of designed constructional elements and also for monitoring deformation movements. I was assigned to do leveling and traversing of the bridge surrounding.

3.2TASK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTER & SOLVING APPROACH

1)Site supervising: While doing the site supervising, I encountered many difficulties such as leaking of water from the underground utilities, finding life utilities in the underground which is not in the plan and the cracking of the house walls in the neighborhood. As an engineer, I manage to respond to all these problems. For the water flooding, I called the SADA and asked them cut off the water supply of that pipe and for the life utility that I found during the excavation; I called the TNB and asked them to check its availability. As for the cracking of the houses that occurred at the houses in the surrounding neighborhood, I file report to the claiming department and did follow up. These are a few problem encountered for the site supervising task.

Figure 1.27: The leaking of the SADA pipe.

Figure 1.27 (b): The leaking of the SADA pipe.

Figure 1.28: The cracking of the house.2)AutoCAD designing: As of the AutoCAD designing, the beginning of designing work was quite unfamiliar as lack of experiences and the deadline were very short. Pressure from the higher authority to finish the work made me panic and quite worried. Therefore, I worked overtime to ensure the work done on time, thus I managed to finish the work and summit it before the deadline.

3)Studying Engineering Drawing and Project Detail: When I first reach, I did not understand much about the process of work and what is the thing to be done and when to finish it. But after a proper timetable and schedule I managed to overcome this and with the help of the existing staff who are very helpful and considerate and made time to teach me.

Figure 1.29: Getting familiar with the Engineering Drawing.

4) Familiarization of tender contract @ Bill of Quantities: In this part, there were many issues that needed me to find proper approach of solving because the rates and the costs changes according to time and the ordering needed a precise understanding of the material needed. Therefore, I did some research which enabled me to solve my report with great success. PART IV

CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

4.1CONCLUSION

This Industrial Training is a great opportunity for me to learn vast information on the life as a working Engineer at the site. The exposure of this Industrial Training had given me knowledge which can not be obtain just by passing through the pages of references books. Therefore I am prominently in gratitude to everybody that involve in making me experience the site work.

The group assignment that was given by the lecturers are much appreciated here, as I understood that when working also there will be different people doing thing differently, therefore I have to exclude the differences among us and try to work together without damaging the project or any task that was assigned to us. I truly feel that I am improved in the networking, and be able to communicate with various types of people.

I also learned the importance of due date or deadlines, thanks to the lectures. In working area, every task that we have, we needed to complete in limited time. There is no time for slacking and cutting time. In fact, I need to do over time in order to complete my task or else somebody will take it away. As they say, u snooze u loses.

Last but not least; this Industrial training has helped me taste the life of working as an Engineers where I could apply everything that I learned in the class and to the working. Assignments from the lectures are really helpful as I can really manage to whip out a report in a jiffy.

4.2RECOMMENDATION

The recommendation that I would give is the duration of training should be increased to six months it will give an enormous experience of the working in the field. They would really see the progress of a project rather than just to see a glimpse of the working life. They could also learn more when more time is spending for the training.

Next recommendation would be that the Academic supervisor should visit more than one time as, it would give them the chance to see the progress made by the student as a trainee.

Lastly, I think that the Industrial Training should be given grade rather than pass or fail. They would do better when grade is given, as they would like to thrive to get an A rather than other grades. Therefore they would try to take part in doing the work and make an effort for the grade.
