Why I chose the Components
Gamer
Motherboard I chose the Asus motherboard due to its ability to handle triple channel RAM,
therefore making the response time from it smaller. The board like many others supports DDR3
RAM and will also support a high end graphics card that has an interface of PCIe 2.0 (x16).
CPU I have chosen in i7 960 Quad Core because of its 3.2GHz clock speed therefore
making this a faster processer and this will make it more capable of running higher spec
games.
RAM For the RAM I have decided to take a 6GB triple channel. The advantage to having
more than one stick of ram is the CPU will send the data that it has processed down the
multiple channels, this will make it faster.
GPU I have taken the Point of View GeFORCE GTX 570. Although this particular Graphics
Card comes with a game this was not the determining factor to which I choose. The Card
has 2GB of RAM built on to it with an interface of PCIe 2.0 (x16), the interface is the biggest
factor in choosing a Graphics Card because it needs to be compatible with the MoBo.
Sound Card The Asus Xonar has multiple inputs and outputs; with its Dolby 7.1 surround
sound this particular sound card will provide the gamer with two extra speaker ports, the
two extra ports will provide a gamer will not just a front left, right and rear left, right but
also above left and right. This will create a quality output of sound from every direction.
PSUFor the current setup the PC wont use 1.2KW but if the user wanted to upgrade the
computer with better parts that released more heat, they would still have the options to
upgrade from air cooling to water.
Optical DrivesA Blu Ray drive will allow the use of CDs, DVDs and Blu Ray disks, although
many new PC games are on DVDs the gamer can still use older games that are on CD. The
PC will be, to some extent, future proof due to the ability to play Blu Ray disks.
HDD I have chosen a 2TB HDD because a gamer will most probably have multiple games
-

10/33
11/10/11
Unit - 2
and would want to download certain additions to games such as Map Packs and Updates.
Fans I have decided to add 2 more fans to keep the components cool. Even though these
are unessential it will make it possible to overclock the components without the need to
spend extra money on the cooling for it.
When deciding what Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor and Headset to choose I decided to look at
online reviews and balance the choice between them and my personal preference.
Case The case was one of the easier components to choose. Mainly because it had to fit
an ATX motherboard in it and have enough space to fit a Blu Ray player and a HDD.
Although many gamers like a good looking case I dont see the point in spending anexcessive amount on this component.
Why I chose the Components
Photographer
Motherboard I have chosen to use a Gigabyte GA-PH67A-UD3-B3 motherboard for the
photographers computer. Although this MoBo is a lower spec that the previous one it will
still handle the other components I have taken.
CPU For this build I have taken an Intel Core i5 Quad Core. This CPU has a slightly high
clock speed of 3.3GHz but, I mainly took this one on the basis that the user would be using
less demanding software and that the other components would be more expensive
compared to the previous build.
RAM I have decided to take a modest but acceptable 4GB Corsair XMS3, though thinking
about it maybe this is too small. Although this certain choice takes advantage of Dual
Channel technology the photographer will most probably be using several programs at once.
The advantage to having a larger RAM would be that the programs would run smoother.
But as I have taken 4GB there is the option to upgrade at a relatively small cost if it is too
little memory.
GPU I have taken a Point of View 3GB GeFORCE GTX 590. Compared to the 2.5GB 570

version of this card, it will run faster and give better visual performance. With an interface
of PCIe 2.0 (x16) it is compatible in many modern Motherboards. At 707 it is the most
expensive internal component, but a photographer would need unbelievable levels of
performance.
PSU I have decided to take a 1KW PSU, although I have lost 200W compared to the
Gamers PC, the PC doesnt contain a Sound Card. The user will still have enough power to
upgrade if they wish and the option to convert from air cooling to water.
Optical Drives I have taken the same Blu Ray player from the Gamers PC. Although most
picture now only take up a maximum of 10-20Mb; the quality and resolution of these will
continue to increase so will the file size. If the user had a client who had many photos taken
he would be able to burn them either to DVD or Blu Ray depending on the total file size.
Also the Optical Drive will allow the photographer to install editing software ect
HDD I have built this PC with 2 Western Digital 750GB Hard Drives. I have taken two so
the user can back up his data, or use it as extra storage space if he fills up the first one. For
example if the first one failed and he had backed up on the second he would not have lost
all their work and income.
Mouse and Keyboard I have taken a basic mouse and keyboard because the user doesnt
really need a specialist mouse.
Monitor I have taken an Ezio ColourEdge CG243W monitor. I have taken this monitor
from the colour confidence website. I decided to look at this website after it was
recommended to me. Although this monitor is on the expensive side it will not disappoint
the user. The photographer will need a monitor will such a good colour resolution because
what is seen on the screen has to come out on the paper.
Graphics Tablet The Hanvon ArtMaster graphics tablet has also come from the colour
confidence website. Although this isnt always essential I have decided to take on just to be
on the safe side.
Case Again; just like the previous build I have taken a gaming case. Although this isnt a
gaming PC the components would get just as hot and need the extra fans.

The Purpose of an Operation System (OS)
An OS is a group of programs that manage the internal components of the PC and it also
provides a common service to the users software. Without an Operating System the user
cannot run a program unless it is a self-booting application. Operating Systems can be
found on a number of modern electrical devices such as Mobile Phones, Games Consoles,
Supercomputers and Web Servers. There are many different OSs the most popular being
Android, Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. Each OS has many different versions; for
example Microsoft Windows is now at 7 whereas Linux is well over 20.
There are five different types of OS; Real-time, Multi-user vs Single-user, Multi-tasking vs
Single-tasking, Distributed and Embedded. A real time OS is a Multi-tasking operating
system that aims to run real time applications. Multi-user vs Single-user operating systems
allow more than one user to be online at one time. These versions are more commonly
used in schools, colleges and the work place.
An operating system consists of many parts. One of the most important is the Kernel. The
Kernel is the main components of many operating systems; it is a bridge between the
applications and the data processing done by the hardware. The Kernels main function is to
manage the computers resources and allow other programs to run and use these resources.
This part of the operating system controls how memory is read and
written, the order in which processes are executed and how
information is received and sent by devices such and your keyboardand mouse.
As many programs that will be installed on to the computer cannot
interact directly with the hardware the OS is in place so this can
happen.
For hardware functions such as input, output and memory
allocation, the OS acts as an bridge between an application and the

The Utilities in Windows XP
Defragmentation
When a user activates the defrag the computers performance drops considerably, the computer
uses the RAM and the HDD together to move around the data stored on the HDD so all common
data is stored together. By doing this the performance of the HDD is increase because of the data
for one file is together meaning the file will be found and read quicker.
Backup
The Backup utility is a wizard to allow users to back up all the data on the PC on to DVDs or Blu Ray
disks. Although this doesnt improve the performance of the computer; you will still have all your
data, your OS ect if your computer malfunctions.

forms of storage. The user can chose from a list of options which files the cleanup will find a delete,
for example it can be used to delete files that are no longer used, temporary internet files,
everything in your recycle bin and many other files. Besides deleting files it can be used to compress
files that have not been accessed for a while.
MsConfig
This is a system utility that allows you to troubleshoot the Microsoft Windows startup process. It can
be used to disable the startup of certain programs when the computer is turned on. When a
program it is automatically set to startup when the computer Is booted up. By stopping the
programs from booting up the computer will load faster but the program will take longer to load the

Magnifier
The screen magnifier is the program that helps the visually impaired use Microsoft Windows. When
the user runs this program it creates a small bar at the top of the screen that enlarges everything
that is level with the cursor. In Windows XP it could magnify up to 9 times its normal size.

Do the utilities increase system performance?
Defragmentation The Defrag utility increases the performance of you HDD. Although this
decreases performance whilst in progress it will increase performance once it has finished.
BackupThe Backup will not increase the performance of your computer but will allow you to
create disks containing all the data about your PC.
Disk CleanupThis utility will again increase the performance of your Hard Drive.
MsConfig MsConfig will increase system performance by stopping programs from booting up
when the PC is turned on.
Windows Task Scheduler This doesnt increase system performance but the programs it
runs most probably will.
Narrator, On Screen Keyboard and Magnifier These three do not increase the
performance of the system but help the user use it.
