OriginIn 1906, a group of industrialists concerned about quality, certification and research in the wool textile sector decided to found a supporting association for competitiveness of companies named Acondicionamiento Tarrasense. Those industrialists knew how to anticipate needs for business collective solutions and laid the foundations of the current concept of technology centre

Over the years and thanks to the work performed, the entity evolved both to the extension of its activities and to the name that is currently identified with the brand known as Leitat.

During these years, our vocation in offering services to companies and entities

has remained unchanged, whereas the activities devel-oped, the organization and our internal work system have changed significantly specializing in different knowledge areas allowing the search for the best technology solutions for companies.

The results obtained lately show that the bet developed by Leitat towards knowledge generation and transfer to the productive fabric is an effective model for economic growth in a fast, efficient and sustainable way, creating at the same time new areas and models for talent development and personal performance for all employees.

LEITAT COLLABORATED IN THE MONITORING OF A HELMET FOR PREVENTING DANGERS IN THE WORK TASKS OF PERSONNEL IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR

Technology can help prevent occupational risks to construction workers. Leitat and the company THelmet Health have created an intelligent helmet that monitors the worker during the working day through sensors and other electronic components in order to measure the level of danger of a construction site and avoid dangers. This is a preventive and analytical method because it uses the different variables registered to implement improvements in the subsequent constructions. The helmet allows for “offline” monitoring and control of the conditions of workers, having an impact on productivity and construction costs. Knowledge of information such as: if the user is wearing or not wearing the helmet, measuring the pulse or thermal stress to which the user is subject to in order to check if close to collapse, etc. facilitate prevention in the construction sector.

SULPHUR SCAVENGERSDEVELOPMENT OF NEW FILMS WITH SULFUR UPTAKE PROPERTIES FOR GREENHOUSE COVERING APPLICATIONS

The overall project objective is to develop a new generation of multilayer polyethylene films for use in covered greenhouse. The films possess sulfur scavenging properties to prevent that the sulfur in the inner layers, from the use of chemicals (as pesticides), enter in contact with stabilizing addi-tives due to the light type HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer) contained in another layer polyethylene films,

and deactivate them, degrading the film prematurely exposed to solar radiation.

BANTEXRECOVERY OF FIBERS EXTRACTED FROM BANANA CROP RESIDUE TO OBTAIN YARN, TECHNICAL FABRICS AND COMPOSITES

Main objetives of the BANTEX Project are to obtain mixed yarns made of banana fibre and polymers, and the production of technical fabrics with them. Different stages are planned, starting from the extraction of the fibre from the wastes of banana food production crops, their enzymatic and chemical treatment to produce a fibre suitable for yarns production, the yarn production itself and the weaving process to obtain fabrics with different formulations, by varying the ratio of banana fibre and the polymeric matrix used. Fabrics produced will be processed by compression moulding to manufacture sheets of composite materials, which will be tested in terms of tensile, flexural and impact properties.

The main advantages of this Project is that the raw material comes from an agricultural waste, the pseudostem of the banana trees, without producing any food displacement, and with the additional environmental benefit coming from the use of residues or by-products of other processes. The only fibres grown nowadays in Europe are flax and hemp, so that the valorization of banana fibre would have important consequences not only for Canary Islands farmers, who are the main European producers of bananas, but also to the European industry of natural fibres and composite materials. It is well known that banana fibres show good mechanical properties, improving the tensile strength and the tensile and flexural elastic modulus of plastic parts, related to the polymer without any reinforcement; previous researches have always used compound obtained by extrusion of t he fibres and the polymers. It is also known that the use of fabrics improves the mechanical properties in

higher extension, because of the predefined orientation; however no researches about the possibilities of producing yarns from banana fibres to produce technical fabrics have already been performed.

The development of these materials will have an important impact in different areas: environmental, because of the use of agricultural wastes, industrial, because of the use of banana fibres to produce composite materials, reducing the oil-based products dependency. This Project will also have a positive impact in the local and national industry coming from the creation of a network around banana food production wastes for their processing and valorization.

All these reasons are the base to start up this Project, which will also involve the collaboration between two Spanish research centres, one of them with wide experience in the field of banana fibres extraction, processing and treatments, and their subsequent use in injection and rotatinal moulding processes, and the other one specialized in yarns and technical fabrics manufacturing focused on composite materials production by means of compression moulding. Both centers will jointly develop these innovative fabrics and composite materials with the fibre placed following a predefined orientation for the attainment of the highest mechanical properties.

ONCOGALFARMADEVELOPMENT OF NEW COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES FOR THE TREATMENT OF ONCOLOGICAL DISEASES

The project's main objective is to design, synthesize and evaluate new molecules biologically designed to provide an innovative treatment for different types of cancers.

The overall objective is split among the following technical objectives:

• Discover new molecules which are effective in animal cancer models through the modulation of protein-protein interactions (PPI) (especially of the Bcl-2 family and XIAP).

• Discover new molecules which are effective in animal cancer models through the modulation of nuclear receptors (especially antagonists, estrogen and androgen receptors).

• Study the synergy of these two mechanisms of action to treat various types of cancers: first, in vitro by measuring the ability of the products generated by inhibiting the growth of prostate cancer cell lines and breast and then in vivo in xenograft models in immunocompromised mice measuring the reduction of tumor volume.

• Generate effective and robust methods of analysis which allow us to measure the concentrations of the products and their metobolitos both in plasma and tumors.

The project is the result of the union of strategic interests of R & D, technical expertise and business of Galician SME. FENTO 3DEVELOPMENT OF PHOTO-FENTON'S TECHNOLOGY WITH SIMULTANEOUS ADDITION OF OZONE FOR DIFFERENT KIND OF WATER

The aim of the current project is to develop an innovative technology (FentO3) focused on an efficient, versatile and sustainable treatment of real effluents from several sources, that could bring a positive social and economical impact in at medium term period. The technology will simultaneously combine both solar photo-Feton and ozonation processes, at laboratory scale.

This new technology will be mainly focused on the treatment/reuse of industrial and WWTP effluents along with its environmental impact reduction. The main objectives and differential aspects of the proposal will be, between others, the increase of the treatment efficiency associated to synergetic effects of reagents combination, the increase of water biodegradability, the reduction of the emergent/prior/specific pollutants and microbial charge, the versatility, the minimization of economical costs, etc.

This is the first time that the simultaneous combination of H2O2 –Fe2+ -O3 – UV/Visible will be applied for real effluent treatment while using solar light as a renewable source for effluent irradiation. Previously, the above combination had been carried out only for the treatment of synthetic water polluted with pesticides and p-cumaric acid, using UVA lamps for their irradiation.

The project envisages dissemination activities (publicity and communication programme) in order to give visibility and publicity to FentO3 technolo-gy, and to promote several actions during and after the project for bringing the technology to market.
